Postdoctoral positions in GRMHD at the Rochester Institute of Technology
by Carlos Lousto 20 Nov '17

20 Nov '17

Postdoctoral positions at the Rochester Institute of Technology The Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation (CCRG) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) anticipates filling several postdoctoral positions in the coming year. We are looking for postdoctoral candidates interested in working in the areas of modeling and simulation of gravitational waves sources and their electromagnetic counterparts, including binary black holes and neutron stars, and their astrophysical interpretation in the context of the LIGO-Virgo observations. We are also interested in candidates working in relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics simulations of accretion disks around supermassive black hole mergers, and their jet dynamics. The successful postdoctoral candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate on a broad range of research topics in gravitational physics. Our group is involved in several large collaborations, including the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), The Einstein Toolkit Consortium (http://einsteintoolkit.org), and a Petascale computing project with NCSA. There are many senior researchers working in a broad range of areas of gravitational physics and astrophysics at the CCRG. This includes Manuela Campanelli (Director), Sukanya Chakrabarti, Joshua Faber, Carlos Lousto, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Jason Nordhaus, Yosef Zlochower, John Whelan, and Hans-Peter Bischof, several postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. students (see http://ccrg.rit.edu/people for an overview on who is or has been at CCRG). The group also collaborates with many faculty, postdocs and graduate students in the larger astrophysics group (http://www.rit.edu/cos/astrophysics/), the school of Mathematical Sciences (http://www.rit.edu/cos/sms/) and the School of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.rit.edu/cos/physics/). The positions are for two or three years and renewable depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. CCRG researchers have access to several computing cluster facilities at national computing centers such as XSEDE and BlueWaters as well as two dedicated 1300 and 1600-core clusters hosted at the Center. More information about the CCRG is available at http://ccrg.rit.edu/ And about Rochester at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester,_New_York Applications should consist of a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae including publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. All materials should be sent electronically as soon as possible to: ccrg-postdoc[AT]ccrgweb.rit.edu For an overview of all job openings at CCRG please go to: http://ccrg.rit.edu/spotlight/jobs. Enquiries can be addressed to the center's Director: Manuela Campanelli, manuela[AT]astro[dot]rit[dot]edu Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Physics and Astronomy, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, New York 14623 USA Review of completed applications will begin as soon as available and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Deadline for applications is January 31st, 2018. Starting date can be as early as September, 2018. RIT is committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.

ET tutorial server at National Data Services Lab machines
by Roland Haas 19 Nov '17

19 Nov '17

Hello Steve, all, Steve's jupyter based new user tutorial is almost ready for use now. The jupyter server (might be unstable right now due to migrating services) can be reached at: https://www.einsteintoolkit.nationaldataservice.org A draft of the website with instructions can be found in the rhaas/new-users-tutorial of the ET website repository: git clone -b rhaas/new-users-tutorial https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/www einsteintoolkit-site (for a fresh checkout) or git fetch git checkout -b rhaas/new-users-tutorial (if you already have the website repo checked out) will make the branch available. The file too look at is documentation/new-user-tutorial.html eg. firefox documentation/new-user-tutorial.html Please note that the server hosting the jupyter server will go into *maintenance* on Monday so may not be available for testing just before the ET call. Please provide feedback and suggestions to Steve, me and/or the users mailing list. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Dear Maria, if you're following a tutorial (say, the one at https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Simplified_Tutorial_for_New_Users), please open a ticket to report which set of instructions do not work on your system. For instance, are you using Simfactory? Where exactly did you modify CPPFLAGS? Best, Eloisa

Re: [Users] About the thorn Einstein exact

On 5 Nov 2017, at 09:28, Nisa Amir <nisaamir(a)math.qau.edu.pk> wrote: > Actually, when in the einsteinexact thorn there is a mathematica package named EinsteinExact. The documentation said that if you want to add some new space time add the space time in that mathematica package. I want to add non kerr which is in polar coordinates to that package, so that it generates a new thorn but I dont know how to do that. > Kindly guide me. Hi, Yes, you can add a new spacetime to the Metrics package (in Cactus/arrangements/EinsteinExact/m/Metrics/metrics). See the examples in there. For example, Schwarzschild.m: (* ::Package:: *) { "Name" -> "Schwarzschild", "Description" -> "Schwarzschild spacetime", "Dimensions" -> 4, "Coordinates" -> {t, r, \[Theta], \[Phi]}, "Parameters" -> {M}, "Metric" -> {{-1 + 2 M / r, 0, 0, 0}, {0, 1/(1 - 2 M / r), 0, 0}, {0, 0, r^2, 0}, {0, 0, 0, r^2 Sin[\[Theta]]^2}}, "SignDet" -> -1 } The EinsteinExact package then uses this information to generate an exact solution thorn, which can be used for initial data in a numerical relativity evolution. However, it only supports metrics which are explicitly given in Cartesian coordinates, so for example, the Schwarzschild example won't work with it (the Metrics package is generic, and is used also in other contexts, outside EinsteinExact). There is a check in arrangements/EinsteinExact/m/EinsteinExact.m that the metric is in Cartesian coordinates. I suspect that the only reason for this check is that it wouldn't know what Cactus gridfunctions to use for anything else. Since you want to do the evolution in polar coordinates, I assume that you are going to have some mapping between x, y and z, and r, th and ph? I must admit I have never tried to do something like this. There are people on this list who have done evolutions in polar coordinates; maybe one of them could give some advice about whether what you are trying to do is feasible? Maybe you could give more details about what you are trying to do? PS: *please* include users(a)einsteintoolkit.org in the CC when you reply. If you reply just to me, then nobody else benefits from the discussion, and nobody else has the opportunity to help you. -- Ian Hinder http://members.aei.mpg.de/ianhin

Since the ET is hosted in a collection of repositories, the direct way would be to check which branch of each you're on. Alternatively, you can simply start with a fresh checkout (of, say, the last release) and see if you encounter the same problem. I am posting this to the list in case someone else has a better solution. In any case, please include this information when you open the ticket. > I tried to open ticket at: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org, but I got this message: > Submission rejected as potential spam I am not sure why this happens.
