Present: Steve, Anna, Yosef, Roland, Qian, Peter, Bhavesh, Gabrielle, Ian, Samuel Cactus release * People assume it is dead by now. * make a Cactus release now, while we have less pressure * check Cactus website for up-to-date information ** remove outdated information ** how can one actually edit the page (CCT accounts)? TODO: Steve to find out * check for Cactus' release notes by Frank * draft release procedures Demo of the RunView * Anna gave presentation, code is on https://github.com/stevenrbrandt/RunView will be updated after this call * Runview is a thorn for the ET * analyse program efficiency for domain experts, presents easy to understand overview of efficiency as interactive (javascript) html pages * 1st graph shows bubble like timeline where bubble size correlates with L3 cache misses (bigger bubbles are worse) * 2nd show timline of schedule items, identifies recurring schedule patterns to show how a single iteration of the pattern looks like * uses information from Cactus timers and from PAPI * currently development stage, not yet production ready * uses regular Cactus, just needs the Runview thorn Q&A: * currently not yet possible to study load imbalance as data Creation of a popular book about the science done by the Einstein Toolkit (Steven) * for outreach and interest in Cactus * geared towards scientists but not already Cactus users * aim is raise visibility of this group * alternatives: ** long review article ** special issue of a journal * to raise the footprint it may also be sufficient to hire an undegraduate student for this Facebook page: * page is up, no information yet though switch ExternalLibraries over to github * proceed for now since no working alternatives are available right now * if this does not work, revert ET workshop: * if not yet done you really must book them now Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Re: [Users] Parameter file for rotating neutron star with IllinoisGRMHD
by Maitraya Bhattacharyya 07 Sep '17

Dear Zach, I was not aware that rotating neutron star initial data was not included in the Einstein Toolkit. Can you tell me more about RotNS ? It may be that I have to write the initial data myself although I am not proficient enough with ET to do so at the moment. Can you help ? Maitraya. Help with simulations having fluid
by Maitraya Bhattacharyya 04 Sep '17

04 Sep '17

Hi, I was suggested by Ian to write to Roland or Frank, but posting this here will be of help to others as well. I am starting out on simulating neutron stars and possibly black holes with accreting fluid. After initial discussions with Prof. Rezzolla (whose book I am presently studying), I have decided to use IllinoisGRMHD for these simulations. While this year's school has a good introduction to hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, I am having difficulty finding documentation to effectively write my parameter files and also to solve for new initial data. My knowledge with the Einstein Toolkit is that I've run the example simulations provided. I need help, to master the initial learning curve and would be ready to devote time if you are an expert at this and can teach me how to do this. You can also provide me with reading material if such is available. I will settle on a problem soon and my questions will be more focused in later emails. Thanks, Maitraya.

Present: Steve, Yosef, Roland, Bill, Erik, Bruno, Eloisa, Ian, Bhavesh, Peter, Gabrielle KNL status: * Cactus supports AVX512, uncovered a bug in Carpet's prolongation op code, patch is up for review Steve will look at it, this also makes tests pass for floats rather than doubles ET workshop in Mallorca update: * http://grg.uib.es/EinsteinToolkit2017/ * 11-14 of October, last day is Ed Fest * will have intro to ET on the 11th * 12th, 13th will be fully dedicated to ET, contributed talks on 12th, 13th will be future plans and developments * will also get together to submit "cost" proposal, which supports building networks in the EU * will include on ET website once more details are fixed * registration is officially closed, room block is gone, rooms can in principle still be booked but there is no guarantee to have a room anymore status of servers at LSU: * simfactory.org is back up * Roland says that Ian has hooked the ET websites to uptime service and can likely add others to the recipient list (or just at the test(a)einsteintoolkit.org mailing list) Transitioning ExternalLibs to git/svn: * Roland has a proof of concept move to github, which lets end users use svn for downloads. Another change (in principle separate) modifies history so that the git repository has manageable size by turning the tar.gz files into tar files so that git's delta-compression works * will move discussion to mailing list and come to a decision next week ad-hoc topics: * Erik has patch for Carpet that disables OpenMP in the prolongation ops, this makes it actually faster for some cases. Roland will provide freedback for KNL. * Gabrielle will create facebook page for ET and add Steve Brandt as admin to the page * not much of a discussion on working groups last week, working document is https://docs.google.com/document/d/1j12IEY8kH6R33qfXpD5BaDDXLEYdNceEqf9crLu… * working groups are advertised on the ET mailing list and decided upon by the maintainers, thus the working group memberships and plans are public and have set deadlines for milestones * procedure is approved, send documents to maintainers(a)einsteintoolkit.org No ET phone call next week due to labor day holiday in the US the next meeting will be 2017-09-11.
