MPI error in tutorial for new users
by Praveer Krishna 02 Apr '20

02 Apr '20

Dear ET Users, I'm a beginner attempting to follow the Jupyter tutorial for new users. I have been able to successfully run the helloworld.par and tov_ET.par files with procs set to 1 but I'm having issues when I try to use multiple processors on my laptop. I initially got this error <https://imgur.com/a/cuLLp79> saying "mpirun: not found", following which I installed Open MPI on my system. The error persisted, so I removed Open MPI and installed mpich instead. This seemingly fixed the issue, but I received another error <https://imgur.com/gdXSqCj> saying "CACTUS_NUM_PROCS is set to 4 but there are 1 MPI processes" I found one <https://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=users@einsteintoolkit.org&q=subject:%…> or two <https://www.mail-archive.com/users@einsteintoolkit.org/msg01591.html> previous queries regarding this exact error, but the suggestions have not worked for me so far. Having never worked with MPI before, I am not sure what else I should try. I'd be grateful for a few words of advice on this issue from anyone in the community. Thank you in advance for your time. Regards, Praveer Krishna

Meeting Minutes for 2020-03-26
by Steven R. Brandt 26 Mar '20

Date: 3/26/2020 Attending: Zach, Steve, Helvi, Alois Peter, Rhaas, Liu, Bill, Maria, Yosef Minutes: Helvi then Bill Chairs: Steve then Roland ETK meeting in LSU. Not canceled yet. Vote on postponing the release by a couple of weeks because of COVID19. * Steve and Roland are not negatively impacted by the situation, but Zach and Helvi are. * Zach's Baikal code is faster with GCC but slower with Intel. For these and other issues, he's not sure what to do about the release. * Student made a big step forward in NRPy+ optimizations, 10% performance boost by improving common subexpression elimination. Maybe use Zach's code for SPEC benchmark? * The release will be postponed by a month. * Changes to Illinois GRMHD will be postponed for a month. Update on PreSync: looking at Kranc. Test suite results: Roland discovered some failures but not many. SuperMUC is still being tested. May need a warning in the release notes about hwloc update. No blockers in bugs. Gallery testing. Roland will poke his students. Use Singularity? Comet probably uses it. Maybe Stampede or DOE clusters? Cory? Bill volunteered and a student to run poisson. BBH and multipatch scalar wave? Who will run? Still looking. Unanswered questions, modifications to TOV collapse. Person got rejected as spam by filter. What other ways are there of contacting us besides the mailing list? Optimized thornlist creator needs approval. Bill suggests that Steve publishes his docker images.

To whom it may concern, My name is Alessandro Ciarfella. I would like to require an account on the tutorial server of the Einsterin relativistic toolkit, but the link provided https://etkhub.ndslabs.org/ gives me an error page. How can I solve this issue? Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Alessandro Ciarfella

Meeting Minutes for 2020-03-19
by Bill Gabella 19 Mar '20

19 Mar '20

Present: Roland H, Bill G, Steve B, Peter D, Alois Peter S, Maria H, Liu H, Chair: Roland Minutes: Bill * update on potential codes to be included in next release, from minutes [RH] ** Baikal ETK (Zach, Helvi) No Zach. ** Illinois GRDMH (Zach, Roland) No Zach. ** Presync (Steve, Roland) Roland and Steve fixing, just warnings now. One ticket is blocker (#2348 <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2348/presync-branch-of…>) and Roland has the fix, some warnings left. Steve working on it. Might have to back out of McLachlan code, so it may not have presync. * timeline <https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details#Schedule_for_ET_20…> of coming release [RH] Keep the same timeline, release same. Could move feature freeze a little later if we want, if folks can work on them--- with APS meeting not in person. * trivial or minor bugs <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=bug&priority=mino…> tagged for next release, all bugs of severity major or worse <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=bug&priority=majo…> (should be definition be fixed before the release) Roland and Steve on the presync ones. Otherwise machine defs for Simfactory. * other open tickets <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=proposal&kind=enh…> flagged for next release No new ones. * gallery testing: tasks <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=task&milestone=ET…> ** volunteers needed, please volunteer (someone) [RH] Gallery examples ready and updated by April 30th, but a good idea to test run them before the feature freeze (Apr 9). After the code is frozen should be re-run. *** TOV: Brock Brendal (UIUC) *** BNS: Shawn Rosofsky (UIUC) *** BBH: TBD Maybe one of Zach's students. *** Poisson: TBD Bill G and group (Vanderbilt) *** Multipatch scalar wave: TBD unanswered questions on mailing list https://www.einsteintoolkit.org/tools/unanswered.php open tickets sorted by update time https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=open&status=new… Tkt no. 2350 <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2350/conversion-of-uni…> about units. Hydro units are conventional M=Msol, G=1, c=1. Maria: going from conventional units to code units? Roland: it uses the conventional units. Magnetic field is a mess, different choices have little difference. Roland and Maria: is it writing down how to do the conversion---look up HydroBase CCL <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/einsteinbase/src/master/HydroBase/int…> and that it appears in the documentation. And give an example. Baumgarte and Shapiro's NumRel book has in appendix I - "Binary black hole puncture simulations as test problems"---note in the captions to Table I.1 and I.2, p. 643, they say for x,P "where 1 code unit = 1.011 M" ! Cactus agrees to map 1 to 0.98 (?). Roland: Should HydroBase output a banner with units? Maybe, but it would get lost in the outputs. tickets ready for review https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=new&status=open… * Other items, not on agenda None -- ===================================== William Gabella Research Assistant Professor Department of Physics and Astronomy Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN USA b.gabella(a)vanderbilt.edu (o) 615-343-2713

Meeting minutes for 2020-03-12
by Hamilton, Maria 12 Mar '20

12 Mar '20

Present: Helvi, Maria, Bill, Roland, Alois Peter Schaffarczyk, Zach, Peter, Christopher Evans, Steven, Bill Gabella, Beyhan, Liu Haoyang, * Zach opens the meeting by requesting volunteers for call chairs and minute takers. * After a brief discussion, the call chairs and minute takers for the next two weeks are decided, and Zach updates the Rota on wiki. * Roland talks about the opportunity to submit a SPEC CPU proposal, Steve checks the deadline is, and consats that work at the proposal could begin Jan. next year. * Peter urges for work to begin as early as possible, for review purposes * Zack reports on Baikal & Baikal Vacuum: Helvi compiled successfully, and he has a student working in improving the c-code kernel of NRPy, for faster performance, and same results * Helvi, as the reviewer for BaikalETK, asks for clarification on what part should review - will contact Zach directly by email * Zach emphasizes that the update has no effect on the jupyter notebooks or thorn generation part * Roland explains that when he reviews NRPy, he focuses on the generated notebooks, similarly on how it was done when reviewing Crank, it was never checked Crank itself, but the output. * Steve points out that it makes no sense of reviewing binary codes * Zach talks about the new updates at IllinoisGRMHD, which was completely rewritten as a collection of NRPy self-contained modules, that can generate the whole code by running the notebooks. * Roland, who reviews IllinoisGRMHD, reiterates his method of reviewing and will get in touch with student that does the work * Steven brings up the problem of missing documentation of how people code headers and macros * Roland indicates that it should be contained in the User Guide, on the chapter How to write a thorn * Roland reports on PreSync, Roland summarizes the discussion about code review, and reiterates that all three codes are in proper review mode * Zach thanks for updates, and ask for timeline * Roland confirms that the timeline did not change: freeze before APS april meeting, and major bugs are fixed before release. He reports on a weird bug in 2006 make, manifesting as an infinite loop, with no way to avoid it, unless the code is compiled serially. * Zach’s suggestion that if make is like that, then add a note to people still using that version to please compile serially, is well received by Roland who agrees, with the alternative to encourage users to update make * Zach goes on to request for a name for the new release and asks if any name should be taken out. * A discussion about Heisenberg follows, and Alois explains that it is still perfectly appropriate, the only thing is that he did not do relativity. He suggests Hilbert, but Roland points out that it was already used. * Helvi proposes Turing, and Roland comments that he kept this name for a special release. * Alois proposes Goedel, and Steven likes this proposal. * Zach proposes Levi-Civita, Maria suggests Marcel Grossman and Riemann, and Alois agrees that Marcel Grossman would be a good pick. * Zach calls to vote, and Steven proposes that Roland, as release coordinator, to propose tow names. * Roland proposes Turing and Riemann. Turing receives 4 votes, Riemann 2, and it is decided that Turing is the name of the next release. * Zach goes on at the next item on the agenda, namely at how to handle incorrect Read/Write statements after this release. * A debate follows between Steven and Roland, and it is decided to keep it as a warning now, but to change it to error next time, however to announce the upcoming change in this release * Roland asks that if anything else need to be deprecated, please add at: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Deprecated_features * Zach requests a report on minor or trivial changes * Steven reports that malloc leaves holes in memory, and that seem to be inherent to platforms like Cactus, and there is nothing to do. The memory management might be fixed with Carpet. * Zach asks Steve to volunteer to put a fix to the ticket, and raises the issue with the gallery testing data files not be able to be downloaded * Roland explains that the data files need to be regenerated, especially for core-collapse, which needs proprietary code, and he offers to do it. * Zach raises the problem of one test that failed in Hydro Excision * Roland explains that the test is sensitive to round-off, it is hard to tweak, because it is excising a spherical region outside a feature, and it should remain open and push it to the next release * Zach suggests increasing the tolerance, or shorten the test and increase the resolution * Peter points out that the difference is 5 order of magnitude, and there is a shock that has to be resolves * Roland concludes that the best approach is to decrease the region and increase the resolution, but it needs to evolve long enough, because is tests shock * Zach reviews important roadblocks: PreSync fails to parse, infinite make loop. * Steve fixed PreSync, and it needs to be tested * Roland found a solution that might not work for Fortran codes * Steven announces that the webpage for workshop https://www.cct.lsu.edu/Einsteintoolkitworkshop has Einstein in festive Mardi Gras attire * Zach requests for student volunteers for gallery tests * Roland mentions an unanswered question on Collapse boson stars * Zach reports that he is taking care of the other question on calculating final spin for remnant, and thanks the ones who gave helpful suggestions * Zach closes the meeting _______________________ Maria C.
