Dear All, the University of Milano-Bicocca has just opened a call for junior postdoctoral fellowships, including two fellowships in the Physics Department. The fellowships are for 2 years each. The fellowships are reserved to candidates that got their PhD in the last 4 years or that are in the process of defending their PhD thesis (see the "Call" document): https://www.unimib.it/ateneo/gare-e-concorsi/assegni-ricerca-tipo-a2-a2-typ… The application deadline is May 31 and the starting day of the contract is October 1st. It is a junior position and the net salary should be ~1450 EUR per month. More information about the Physics Department can be found here: https://www.fisica.unimib.it/en More information about the astrophysics group can be found here: https://astro.fisica.unimib.it/ More information about Milan can be found here: https://www.yesmilano.it/en Cheers, Bruno -- Prof. Bruno Giacomazzo Department of Physics University of Milano-Bicocca Piazza della Scienza 3 20126 Milano Italy email: bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it phone: (+39) 02 6448 2321 web: http://www.brunogiacomazzo.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Prof. Bruno Giacomazzo Department of Physics University of Milano-Bicocca Piazza della Scienza 3 20126 Milano Italy email: bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it phone: (+39) 02 6448 2321 web: http://www.brunogiacomazzo.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem regriding using trigger thorn
by Dhruv Desai 10 May '22

Hello, I am running a simulation with Daniel Siegel where we use a base level plus 6 refinement levels, like the following: CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[1] = 336.0 # dx/64 CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[2] = 168.0 # dx/64 CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[3] = 84.0 # dx/64 CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[4] = 42.0 # dx/64 CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[5] = 21.0 # dx/64 CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[6] = 10.5 # dx/64 We ran simulations of a neutrino-driven wind from a Neutron star, out to ~150 ms, and now we want to turn on a high magnetic field. We have tried B-fields of varying strengths, but if we try a B-field strength that is too high, we find errors generated on the innermost refinement level boundary. We believe if we enlarge the innermost box size ie. CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[6] = 10.5 --> ~19-20, these errors would disappear. But we are having trouble doing this. In our attempt, we activate the trigger thorn with the following settings: ActiveThorns = "Trigger" Trigger::Trigger_Debug = 1 Trigger::Trigger_Once[0]=1 Trigger::Trigger_Number =1 Trigger::Trigger_Checked_Variable[0]="GRHydro::GRHydro_rho_min" Trigger::Trigger_Reduction [0]="" Trigger::Trigger_Relation [0]="<" Trigger::Trigger_Checked_Value [0]= 1.1 Trigger::Trigger_Reaction [0]="steerparam" Trigger::Trigger_Steered_Parameter_Value [0] = "19.32" Trigger::Trigger_Steered_Parameter_Name [0] = "radius_1[6]" Trigger::Trigger_Steered_Parameter_Thorn [0] = "CarpetRegrid2" (We use a trivially satisfied trigger condition so that the parameter value is reset immediately upon restart.) Since the CarpetRegrid2 variable "radius_1[6]" is not steerable, we had to modify this to make it such. After turning debug on, we see the following output: INFO (Trigger): Testing triggers INFO (Trigger): last_checked: -1 INFO (Trigger): trigger nr. 0 fulfilled for GRHydro_rho_min (0.000000<1.100000) INFO (Trigger): Steering parameter INFO (Trigger): Parameter steered Which supposedly successfully resets the value correctly. We believe that even though this may be the case, the actual grid is not changing. We plot the first 2 boundary levels and show them in the attached file. There must be interpolation of the second innermost grid onto the innermost grid, and we believe this is not actually handled mid-simulation and thus doesn't not result in the change we expect. Is there any simple way of changing the inner grid easily? Any help is much appreciated! [image: image(1).png] Thanks, Dhruv Desai

Einstein Toolkit Weekly Phone Call Minutes Date : May 5, 2022 Chair : Beyhan Minutes: Leo Present: Beyhan, Bruno, Leo, Peter, Roland, Yosef, Zach * Next ET release - Did anything happen during the testing that could potentially delay the release? No, but Roland wished tests were conducted on more systems. - Have we decided on someone to run the binary black hole example? If no one was found, Steve would be the one running it. - The announcement of the next release needs to be drafted. Roland suggested using previous announcements as a starting point. * ET tests - Roland: no longer need to make as many workarounds to get ET working on Mac OS. M1 Mac is still untested by the developers. - Peter: ran tests on Stockholm machine "Sunrise" and nothing new to report * ET Summer School - Registration is closed (deadline was May 1). - Secured venue. Catering has been arranged. - Contributed talk abstracts review took place earlier this week. 11 abstracts were selected. Talks will be in 7+2 minutes format (talk+questions). - Sent out participant support cost information to those who had requested it. - Slightly reorganized the schedule to accommodate longer contributed talk sessions. Updated program can be found here: https://einsteintoolkit.github.io/et2022uidaho/program.html - Added information on ground transportation to/from airports to the website. This information can be found here: https://einsteintoolkit.github.io/et2022uidaho/in_person_attendance.html * SpEC contribution - Erik or Steve could give a tutorial on how to use SpEC, which has been scheduled for May 12. We are currently waiting for their response. Peter will send a reminder email to Erik. * Unanswered questions on the mailing list - M1 Mac architecture error during compilation of the ET. Roland noticed a clang error, which the ET does not support. It is recommended to use gcc instead. Roland will respond. - There will be a summer school for the NR community happening at Brown University, US on Aug 8-12, 2022. Website: https://icerm.brown.edu/events/re-22-f20w1. - Roland will also respond to a follow up question regarding the Trigger thorn. * Open tickets - Steve and Roland are looking into moving the envsetup so that it is easy to generate multiple configurations on a machine with simfactory. - Roland is currently the one responsible for adding and testing configurations on different clusters. Zach worried about the sustainability of keeping all of the responsibility on Roland and suggested that other individuals should be responsible for optimizing the configurations on systems they use often. Roland mentioned that his tests sometimes only occur once every six months and that, even though a configuration works, it is not necessarily optimal. Next week's chair : Roland Next week's minutes: - (Erik's Presentation) May 19's chair : Beyhan May 19's minutes: Miguel ------ Leonardo Werneck, Ph.D. Postdoctoral researcher Office EP 314 | Department of Physics | University of Idaho 875 Perimeter Dr. MS 0903 Moscow, ID 83844-0903, USA leonardo(a)uidaho.edu <mailto:leonardo@uidaho.edu> https://leowerneck.github.io <https://leowerneck.github.io/>

Applications open for NR community summer school Aug 8-12, 2022
by Elias R. Most 03 May '22

03 May '22

Dear (aspiring) numerical relativists, Applications are now open for the first NR community summer school, Aug 8–12, 2022, at ICERM, Brown University, US. This one-week summer school brings together early career researchers (graduate students and postdocs) interested in learning the state-of-the-art in numerical relativity, from the basics to advanced topics. Our preliminary program is: * Intro & advanced NR (Helvi Witek & Katy Clough) * Relativistic hydrodynamics (Elias Most) * Gravitational waves (Deirdre Shoemaker) * High-performance computing (Eloisa Bentivegna) * Hackathon * Evening talks, side program, NR community codes hands-on sessions No prior exposure to numerical relativity is required, though basic familiarity with computational physics and general relativity would be desirable. The school is planned as an in-person event with streaming options available for the lecture program. ICERM will be able to offer limited funding for some participants. Applications are open now on this web page: * https://icerm.brown.edu/events/re-22-f20w1 Even if you are planning to participate online, please register and indicate so in your application. We particularly encourage applications from participants from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities. With warm regards, The organizing committee, Nils Vu, Thomas Helfer, Elias Most, Helvi Witek, Scott Field, and Leo Stein

Re: [Users] Segmentation Fault with CarpetReduce

DG, it could also be that there is a bug in the code, but other compilers are not affected by it. My strategy is usually to make sure that I can reproduce the problem on the cluster when running just with one core. In this way it is easier to run within a debugger and spot the problem.
