Problem with CarpetRegrid2 for changing num_levels via trigger
by Shamim Haque 24 May '22

24 May '22

Hi all, I am trying to change the num_levels for CarpetRegrid2 using the trigger, inspired from the gallery example at ET website. The trigger seems to kick in at the right place, as the simulation stopped while regridding for new num_levels. The dedicated lines in parfile are as follows: *CarpetRegrid2::freeze_unaligned_levels = "yes"CarpetRegrid2::movement_threshold_1 = 0.10CarpetRegrid2::movement_threshold_2 = 0.10CarpetRegrid2::num_centres = 2CarpetRegrid2::num_levels_1 = 7 #10CarpetRegrid2::num_levels_2 = 7CarpetRegrid2::position_x_1 = -13.543564CarpetRegrid2::position_x_2 = 13.543564CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[1] = 270.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[2] = 160.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[3] = 90.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[4] = 40.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[5] = 25.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[6] = 9.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[7] = 6.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[8] = 3.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_1[9] = 1.5CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[1] = 270.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[2] = 160.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[3] = 90.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[4] = 40.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[5] = 25.0CarpetRegrid2::radius_2[6] = 9.0CarpetRegrid2::regrid_every = 32CarpetRegrid2::symmetry_rotating180 = "no"CarpetRegrid2::verbose = "yes"* *Trigger::Trigger_Number = 1Trigger::Trigger_Checked_Variable[0]="ADMBase::alp"Trigger::Trigger_Reduction [0]="minimum"Trigger::Trigger_Relation [0]="<"Trigger::Trigger_Checked_Value [0]=0.1Trigger::Trigger_Reaction [0]="steerscalar"Trigger::Trigger_Steered_Scalar [0] = "CarpetRegrid2::num_levels[0]" # == num_levels_1Trigger::Trigger_Steered_Scalar_Value[0] = "10"* The outfile reports the following error: *INFO (CarpetRegrid2): Centre 1 is at position [0.000191809,0.000291781,-0.00018496] with 10 levelsINFO (CarpetRegrid2): Centre 2 is at position [0.000191809,0.000291781,-0.00018496] with 7 levelsINFO (CarpetRegrid2): Regridding level 0 map 0 at iteration 4129 time 806.25INFO (CarpetRegrid2): Regridding levels 1 and up [1mERROR from host astro-Z390-AORUS-ELITE process 0 in thorn CarpetRegrid2, file /home/astro/Documents/ET/Cactus/configs/sim/build/CarpetRegrid2/regrid.cc:89: -> [0m Region 1 has 10 levels active, which is larger than the maximum number of refinement levels 7* I could not figure out where it went wrong. The minimum lapse at iteration 4128 is 0.095, so the condition in trigger seems to be working fine. Some insight into it would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Implementing a simple 1+1 BSSN in Python
by Chris Stevens 17 May '22

17 May '22

Hi all, I've been having trouble implementing the BSSN equations, as given by CTGamma, in Python using the package COFFEE, which I am very familiar with: https://gitlab.com/thebarista/coffee https://doi.org/10.1016/j.softx.2019.100283 The main comments are: -- For simplicity, I am starting with a 1+1 code (set 2/3 spatial derivatives to be exactly zero). -- The 1+log slicing for the lapse and a zero shift. -- The "phi" conformal factor type -- The evolution equations are written to Python by a very slight modification of the .m file in CTGEvolution. I've confirmed this .m file outputs the same file that is in the src directory. -- The vanishing of the trace of A is enforced after each full timestep in the same way as CTGamma. -- Boundary conditions are not applied. -- Fourth order SBP operators that lean over toward the boundaries are used. -- Minkowski initial data with all fields zero except \gamma11/22/33. -- Euler step is used for time integration to easier compare between Python and the Einstein toolkit. This leads to a stable evolution in the Einstein toolkit with the attached .par file using a simple one patch Cartesian grid. However, in Python, I get that fields diverge, starting at the boundaries and then propagating inward (including with RK4). This behaviour does not go away with higher resolution or reduced CFL. It is however, fixed completely by setting the second spatial derivative of \alpha to be exactly zero. Trying many different SBP FD operators that have proved successful for other projects has not changed the behaviour. The COFFEE code has been used and tested in a variety of projects and so there should not be a problem here. Thus, the only thing I can think of, is that the Einstein toolkit is doing something that I am not realizing, that is helping it remain stable. Hopefully, somebody on this mailing list might have an idea? I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

DOE INCITE 2023 program
by Vassilios Mewes 12 May '22

12 May '22

Dear fellow Einstein Toolkit users, I wanted to bring the DOE INCITE 2023 program to your attention (apologies if this isn’t news to you!).. The call for applications to the DOE INCITE 2023 program is open through June 17 for new proposals and July 22 for renewal proposals. There is an early career track for PIs that are within 10 years of their PhDs and have not been PIs in INCITE allocations before. There will be an informational webinar on June 3 2022. More information can be found at https://www.doeleadershipcomputing.org/ Best wishes, Vassili
