second circular for the Numerical Frontiers in Numerical Relativity 2025
by Sascha Husa 12 Feb '25

12 Feb '25

Second Circular Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to share further updates about the workshop New Frontiers 2025: Past, Current, and Future Challenges in Numerical Relativity, which will take place from July 21 to 25, 2025, at the University of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca, Spain. The final day will be Carles's Fest, a heartfelt celebration of Carles Bona's well-deserved retirement, honoring his contributions and lasting impact in the field through short talks and shared memories. The workshop will explore the significant theoretical and computational challenges ahead in understanding gravitational wave observations, electromagnetic counterparts, and the fundamental nature of gravity. By reflecting on past achievements and challenges, we aim to inspire innovative approaches to current and future endeavours in numerical relativity. We are delighted to announce that registration and abstract submission are now open. The deadline for both is April 30, 2025. For registration and abstract submission, please visit the workshop webpage: https://grg.uib.es/newfrontiersNR25/ We encourage you to share this information with colleagues and collaborators who might be interested. We look forward to your participation and to welcome you to Mallorca in July! All the best, Miguel Bezares, Carlos Palenzuela, and Sascha Husa on behalf of the SOC PS: As it is becoming usual lately, there is a SCAM about a travel agency offering to book the hotel for the conference. We do recommend booking the hotel well in advance, and we will include a list of suggestions in the webpage soon. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sascha Husa Research Scientist Institute of Space Sciences (ICE, CSIC and IEEC) sascha.husa(a)csic.es Campus UAB, Carrer de Can Magrans s/n 08193 Cerdanyola del Valles (Barcelona, Spain) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

installation of ET on a cluster
by IOSIF PANAGIOTIS 11 Feb '25

11 Feb '25

Dear ET users, This is (yet another) message requesting help to setup Einstein Toolkit on an HPC cluster. Probably this type of messages is a bit recurring in this mailing list, but here goes... 🙂 I have installed Einstein Toolkit on my laptop and run a low-resolution simulation of a TOV star. Everything worked fine, no problems encountered. However, as probably most users interested in using ET, I would like to install it on a cluster to study something more computationally demanding. The CactusTutorial jupyter notebook for new users does not tackle this scenario in detail. Understandably, it would be unrealistic to provide generic instructions that cover all cluster configurations. How about guidelines that cover some common scenarios though? (e.g. a cluster that organizes libraries and packages as modules and also uses the Spack manager) Is there some documentation that gives basic guidelines as to how setup ET on a cluster aimed at a user profile that has (obviously) no previous experience with ET, simfactory etc and (quite possibly) also limited experience on how HPC clusters are setup, how packages are installed etc? This request stems from the fact that I have been discovering little-by-little and through trial-and-error that e.g. running `./simfactory/bin/sim setup-silent` as outlined in the CactusTutorial, makes no sense for the case of a cluster. In my opinion, and if I may offer a suggestion, it would be a good idea to underline this distinction in a future revision of the tutorial. Furthermore, another crucial step to setup ET on a cluster seems to be that the user must create "manually" their respective "<my_cluster>.cfg" and "<my_cluster>.ini" files and possibly the corresponding run and submit scripts. Could you confirm that this is indeed the case? What is the recommended course of action to do this? Maybe one should start by copying a sample ".cfg" file and amend it with information found from their cluster's technical documentation? I can follow up with more specific questions about problems I encountered during my so far unsuccessful attempts to install ET on a cluster, but to avoid people having to repeat explanations already given in the past, I would like first to make sure that I am not missing some source of information/documentation already available. Also, in the long shot that someone has already installed ET on one of the CINECA clusters in Italy (I am trying to install ET on the Leonardo cluster), I would be grateful if you could share your insights! Best regards, Panagiotis ------------------- Panagiotis Iosif postdoctoral researcher Department of Physics, University of Trieste Via Alfonso Valerio 2, Trieste 34127 Italy -------------------

Meeting minutes for 2025-02-06
by Lucas Timotheo Sanches 06 Feb '25

06 Feb '25

Present: Lucas (Minutes), Steven R. Brandt, Peter Diener, Roland Hass (chair), Maxwell Rizzo, Zachariah Etienne. # Pre agenda topics - Steve inquired about the dates for the various Einstein Toolkit meetings. Roland has information on the following: 1. The European Einstein Toolkit meeting should to take place on July 7-11 at Southampton, in England 2. The North America Einstein Toolkit meeting should take place at UT - Austin, in early June. 3. The Annual Einstein Toolkit / CarpetX hackathon and working workshop will take place in the summer. The precise date will be discussed during the next PI meeting for the Einstein Toolkit grant, which should take place in Feb. # Upcoming release possible inclusions - Z4C: No progress was reported. - BHaHAHA horizon finder: Zach says he will report results obtained with the code and with the Einstein Toolkit in the next APS meeting, in March. - CCE code to hook up to Spectre: No progress to report, but the developers began having weekly meetings for discussing the code. - FLRWSolver modules: No new information to report. Roland will ask Hayley if she has a reviewer in mind. - Gallery example for Canuda (Axi-dilaton): Deborah pushed the last few required changes. With this, Lucas reports the example to be done and good to go. - Gallery examples for Canuda (Cheng-Hsin), Fishbone-Moncrief, IGM, GRHayL and others (Roland Hass), will probably be postponed. - Roland reports that he will work to give Maxwell Rizzo access to the various repositories needed for the release. # Mailing list questions - A student, Valdir Márcio Sena Vitalino reports having difficulties installing on Windows 11. The student seems unable to communicate in English and speaks Portuguese. Despite Roland's efforts to provide him with a translated Jupyter notebook. Lucas has agreed to talk to him and guide him through the installation process. # Tickets ready for review - 2851: Roland provided a working fix, and asked for people familiar with Cray pointers to take a look. Peter says it may not be bad, so Roland will push it. # Tickets up for review - These were the same tickets as in the previous section. Since there were no new updates on them, nothing was discussed. # Extra stuff - Next week we will be querying when exactly the various meetings will take place.
