CarpetX tutorial during ET call
by Roland Haas 09 Feb '21

09 Feb '21

Hello all, due to CarpetX development having reached a stage where it is ready for early users to test it with their science codes, Erik agreed to give a short CarpetX tutorial in one of the ET calls. The initially proposed date of 2021-02-18 unfortunately conflicts with other conferences. Please use: https://doodle.com/poll/r4snxqpn6es3kicy?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link to indicate times you would be interested and available for such a 1 hr long tutorial. Deadline to respond is end of this week (Saturday February 6th) to leave time for preparation. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Final Reminder: Today's Einstein Toolkit Seminar
by Zach Etienne 04 Feb '21

04 Feb '21

Greetings Einstein Toolkit users! This is the last reminder that we'll be having a special *Einstein Toolkit Seminar*, *today* at our usual telecon time (10AM US Eastern Time) in the usual telecon Zoom channel (https://lsu.zoom.us/j/631356683). Our speaker will be *Gabriele Bozzola, from the University of Arizona*, and he'll be talking about "*Kuibit: a community-friendly tool to analyze Cactus simulations*". Here are some more details: *Abstract* Analyzing Einstein Toolkit simulations can be a challenging task. Usually, the process involves a series of technical obstacles like combining data from different restarts or working with HDF5 files. In this talk, I will present kuibit, a Python3.6+ library that takes care of all these low-level details (and many other more) and that provides high-level, intuitive, representations of the data. Kuibit comes with a wide range of features that include full support for 1-3D ASCII and HDF5 grid data, time and frequency series, gravitational waves, and apparent horizons. With kuibit, users can inspect most of the content of a simulation with just a few lines of code. Importantly, kuibit is designed to be a code for the community: it is user-friendly and does not require any proprietary software to run, it has documentation and examples, and it is openly developed with emphasis on extensibility and maintainability. In the talk, I will first give a general overview of the project, then I will discuss in more details the various modules. --- We look forward to seeing you there! -Zach, on behalf of the Maintainers * * * Prof. Zachariah Etienne Physics & Astronomy Dept. running simfactory on cluster
by Hamilton, Maria 04 Feb '21

04 Feb '21

Hi, Could I please get some help getting simfactory to run on a cluster? If I do sim setup, it will create a machine.ini with only one node. The problem is that a cluster has many nodes, and each node has a different name and sim will refuse to run on a node with a different name. The instructions read: "It is likely that you will have to further customize this file" The instructions also let me know that: "the setup command will also create a new machine definition for the local machine in simfactory/mdb/machines. You may also have to add extra information to this file." I understand that I need to make a , or to modify a current one, where I can specify the number of nodes. How do I do that? I was instructed to use stampede2-knl.ini and try to modify it, but it looks intimidating and I am not sure how to do that. Shall I ask for help from the cluster manager so that I don't get the specifications wrong? Do I need to manually buid a *cfg, *sub and *run as well? Lastly, I once this is accomplished, how do I launch simfactory tto make sure it can engage more than a node in the run? thanks, Maria _______________________ Maria C. local and global reduction handles
by Roland Haas 02 Feb '21

02 Feb '21

Hello all, Cactus's reduction interface provides two different set of reduction operations: 1. reduction of grid variables (grid functions, grid arrays) that are identified via their variable index 2. reduction of local arrays that are identifies using the local memory address These two operations use different reduction operator handles returned by the CCTK_ReductionHandle (grid variables) and CCTK_ReductionArrayHandle (local arrays) functions, respectively. In the past the numerical values returned by these functions often happened to be identical for identical string input (eg "maximum" might be handle number 1 in both functions). This was, however, an accident due entirely to the order in which the individual operator names for each type of reduction were registered with Cactus. As of Cactus commit 32def5eb "Cactus: use different handle ranges for old-style array and grid reductions" https://bitbucket.org/cactuscode/cactus/commits/32def5eb2030151b15753e04047… this is no longer the case and the numeric handle values intentionally differ. This may make existing code that incorrectly used the handles to fail with errors reported about invalid operator handles or unknown operators (depending on the level return code checking done). The common error case is that CCTK_ReductionHandle was used with CCTK_ReduceLocalScalar which must be fixed by using CCTK_ReductionArrayHandle. Please see ticket #1001: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/1001/distinguish-betwe… for details. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Meeting Minutes 2021-01-28
by Miguel Gracia 28 Jan '21

28 Jan '21

Present: Peter D., Roland H., Miguel G., Yosef Z., Bill G., Steven B., Atul K, Maria H. , Zach E., Karima S. Chair: Zach E. Minutes: Miguel G. * Announcements We are going to have a ET seminar on February 4,2021 ( same time of the regular ET call) Kuibit: a community-friendly tool to analyze Cactus simulations<http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2021-January/007755.html> by Gabriele Bozzala (zoom link: https://lsu.zoom.us/j/631356683) * SPEC benchmark contribution [RH, SB] A survey was sent to know what code to include in SPEC. Steven suggested to use a code that is officially part of the ET, this limits the options to CCZ4 McLachlan. People agreed CCZ4 is what should be use. * Tutorial server down[RH] The server is now working again. * Simfactory survey<http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2021-January/007754.html> [RH] Survey about simfactory was sent with the purpose of knowing what simfactory features people are using. This will serve as a guide to improve the python 3 simfactory version. * Unanswered questions / open tickets / tickets ready to review # 2491 Zach E. added notes to the ticket with a Roland’s suggestion about a possible solution. #963 Peter D. will take a look this week. #2462 Steve B. will take a look on this ticket. #1631 Multipole patch, hard coded limit for number of l, Roland’s patch fixed this. * Other comments -Karima S. had interpolation errors. This error could appear when a spherical surface(s) radius is larger than the domain or when AHFinder is looking for an apparent horizon using a surface with radius larger than the domain. In the later case the warning could be ignore. -Zach E. and Kenneth S. will give an update on the LaTeX parser in the Feb 11 call. * Chair and minute taker search. February 4 ET seminar, Chair: Roland H. Speaker: Gabrielle Bozzola Feb 11, Chair: Roland H. Minutes: Bill G. Feb 18 ET seminar, Chair: Peter D. Speaker: Erick S. End of the meeting.
