About cctk_time
by Jay Vijay Kalinani 12 Nov '20

12 Nov '20

Dear all, I am trying to perform a magnetised TOV simulation using Einstein Toolkit and Spritz GRMHD code. In particular, currently I have a subroutine that adds a dipolar magnetic field to the TOV star after its initial data has been generated via TOVSolver thorn. Within this subroutine, I have added the following lines that print the 'cctk_time' value as: character(len=200) warnline WRITE( warnline, '( "cctk_time: ", g16.7)' ) cctk_time call CCTK_INFO(warnline) This subroutine is scheduled in HydroBase_Con2Prim after Con2Prim step. And I get the following lines in the .out file as: ......... INFO (TOVSolver): Integrated TOV equation INFO (TOVSolver): Information about the TOVs used: INFO (): TOV radius mass bary_mass mass(g) cent.rho rho(cgi) K K(cgi) Gamma INFO (): 1 8.12502 1.40016 1.50618 2.78e+33 0.00128 7.92e+14 100 1.45e+05 2 INFO (TOVSolver): Not using old matter initial data INFO (TOVSolver): Done interpolation. INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.000000 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): Adding a poloidal magnetic field to the TOV star on reflevel 0 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): Adding atmo to the TOV star on reflevel = '0' INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.000000 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iteration Time | ADMBASE::alp | HYDROBASE::rho | HYDROBASE::press | SPRITZ::B_norm | minimum maximum | minimum maximum | minimum maximum | minimum maximum ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 0.000 | 0.6698612 0.9603815 | 5.827798e-11 0.0012800 | 0.0000000 0.0001638 | 8.399814e-09 0.0000399 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.3906250E-01 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.3906250E-01 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.7812500E-01 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.7812500E-01 1 0.078 | 0.6698612 0.9603833 | 5.827814e-11 0.0012799 | 0.0000000 0.0001638 | 8.294987e-09 0.0000395 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.1171875 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.1171875 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.1562500 INFO (Spritz_DipoleAndAtmo): cctk_time: 0.1562500 2 0.156 | 0.6698612 0.9603850 | 5.827829e-11 0.0012797 | 0.0000000 0.0001638 | 8.294994e-09 0.0000390 .......... The simulation is performed in uniform grid with dx=dy=dz=0.3125, time::dtfac = 0.25 and HydroBase::timelevels = 2. As you may see from the output lines, in between iteration 0 which is at cctk_time=0.0 and iteration 1 which is at cctk_time=0.078125, there is an intermediate time step with 'cctk_time=0.0390625' when the subroutine is called. I was hoping to understand better why this intermediate time step exists between two consecutive iterations, and if there is any documentation I could look at. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Jay Kalinani

Minutes for Nov 12, 2020 Einstein Toolkit Telecon
by Zach Etienne 12 Nov '20

12 Nov '20

Present: Zach, Steve, Peter, Beyhan, Jay Kalinani, Ken Sible, Liu Haoyang, Maria Hamilton, Miguel Gracia, Roland, Sam Cupp, Bill Gabella, Yosef Carpetcode.org server transfer -- Steve warns if we transfer to LSU, the mailing lists will break. Looking into a workaround. NRPyPN vote for inclusion: Roland -- Used for setting TwoPunctures parameters for binary black hole initial data. Reviewed positively by Peter. Roland had concerns about exposing the user to the inner workings of NRPyPN that should be hidden. Zach fixed those in the past 12 hours. Zach says he still needs to add a doc/documentation.tex file stub that points to the actual (Juptyer) documentation. NRPyPN received majority approval for inclusion. Release planning: Roland -- No *major* issues for which there are tickets of which we are aware. Testsuites: Still pass, some oddities are observed with TwoPunctures that can disappear when Ofast compiler flag is changed to e.g., O2. Gallery tests: Roland -- Multipatch scalar wave finished. Others need to be done in the next 2 weeks. Steve says he hopes to get to his next week. Beyhan too. Unresolved messages on mailing list: None to report. Other business Steve: Don't forget about SPEC benchmark! Roland: Recordings of Erik, Zach, & Steve's Brown ICERM workshop tutorials have been posted on the Einstein Toolkit homepage Roland: UIUC postdoc application for Einstein Toolkit development is due soon (Dec 1)! Jay Kalinani: TOV simulation using new Spritz code. When adding a dipolar magnetic field to the star, there is some confusion about the behavior of cctk_time. There's a desire to not store RK intermediate values of cctk_time to cctk_time itself. Zach suggested that a local variable could be defined that simply outputs cctk_iteration*dt if desired. Roland had some comments about scheduling such a routine. Chairs/Minute Takers for upcoming meetings: Bill -- Minutes Nov 19 Sam -- Chair Nov 19 Miguel Gracia -- Minutes Dec 3 Roland -- Chair Dec 3 -Zach * * * Prof. Zachariah Etienne Physics & Astronomy Dept. Automated code generation with correctness proofs
by Erik Schnetter 06 Nov '20

06 Nov '20

Since we're discussing automated code generation at the moment, and since I just learned about Spiral, let me point you to <http://spiral.net/index.html>. Spiral is an automated code generator for compute kernel that starts from a mathematical description in Coq, an automated theorem prover, and works from there all the way down to efficient assembler code. (I'm not suggesting to use it for the Einstein Toolkit, since it's very important for us that the generated code ties nicely into Cactus.) However, being able to automatically go e.g. from the definition of a Fourier Transform to highly efficient machine code is quite exciting. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

NRPyPN: Vote during November 12 Telecon
by Zach Etienne 05 Nov '20

05 Nov '20

Hello everyone, As we discussed during our weekly Einstein Toolkit telecon today (Oct 29), we will be having a vote on November 12 to determine whether to include NRPyPN into the Toolkit. Proposing a vote such as this requires at least one week notice sent to the users mailing list. This email serves as that notice. Please respond to this message if you have any objections to including NRPyPN in the next (late-November) Toolkit release, so we can discuss. Thanks everyone, and we hope to see you during our next telecon (Nov 5)! -Zach * * * Prof. Zachariah Etienne Physics & Astronomy Dept. Meeting Minutes 2020-11-05
by Gabella, William E 05 Nov '20

05 Nov '20

Present: Yosef Z, Bill G, Steve B, Roland H, Ken S, Peter D, Atul K , Zach E, Maria BH, Samuel C, Miguel G Chair: Yosef Minutes: Bill * https://carpetcode.org is gone [RH] Roland, Erik S has removed carpetcode.org and Erik has canceled the DNS entry. We have to learn what his plans are. Roland will reach out to Erik, has a phone call with him today. * upcoming release planning (3.5 weeks to go, 1 weeks to feature freeze, 1 weeks to have everything reviewed) [RH] November 12 all codes proposed need to reviewed. Email for NRPyPN today, for official vote next week at the Thursday meeting. Naming. Bill suggests Dewitt-Morette. Roland likes a person who died long ago, but Hack was more recent. No other objections. ** revert of LAPACK and BLAS changes to use bash_utils, Ticket #2476 https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2476/blas-and-lapac-ex… Roland, shortly after last release changed to use BLAS utils helper functions for what to use for /usr/lib64 or similar. LAPACK and BLAS dir point to the /lib directory, and they fail on some clusters. Roland reversed them to the Turing release, and he will take a look after this release. Steve, also recalls something about the HDF5 variables...finding the include directory is a problem, etc, after its basedir is set. Steve, has been testing cactus on different compilers and there is a version where testAH does not pass nor stop, gcc 4.9.1. Other gcc's seem fine. ** Gallery test runners search [[Release Details]] [RH] *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2175/test-single-stabl… Single, stable neutron star] [Miguel Gracia] Finished the test and still has to make the files and figures and upload to the repo. Roland, should also test after the feature freeze. Sometimes if large changes last minute, test again after release. *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2174/test-multi-patch-… Multi Patch Scalar Wave Equation] [Rahime Matur] *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2173/test-poisson-equa… Poisson equation] [Bill Gabella] Ran it last time and does not expect any problems in the test, same HPC, etc. *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2176/test-binary-neutr… Binary neutron star] [Beyhan Karakaş] *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2172/test-binary-black… Binary black hole GW150914] [Steve Brandt] Steve, has not done it yet..."might" do it. Also the state of the cactus.org website. Seems https://cactus.org is unavailable. ** release testsuite [http://einsteintoolkit.org/testsuite_results/index.php status] Page shows a few failing tests. Roland, run testsuite on all public clusters in Simfactory. See the text after the table for changes from last release. Shows the status if different from last release. See "New tests that fail" and "Newly passing tests," etc. TwoPunctures, just initial data maybe one or two time steps. In Test.ccl has a threshold of 1% for TwoPunctures and normally we use 10^-6 or so. Error goes away if compiled with IEEE conforming flag. In this release replaced ADM Constraints which have been out of the Toolkit for some time, and this test is using other tests instead---so it is a new TwoPunctures test. Yosef, suggest just putting a grid in between the two punctures. Zach is experiencing non-robust behavior on a certain cluster for Baikal and McLachlan. That HPC uses the modules (LMod?) to change environment and configuration. ** Tickets marked for the upcoming release https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?milestone=ET_2020_11&s… Includes tickets for the Gallery Examples, and major bugs. The person who created the ticket classifies it, so check on ones you have created and be sure the are "major bugs." ** Open bugs of severity major or worse https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=bug&priority=majo… * Unanswered Mailing list, https://www.einsteintoolkit.org/tools/unanswered.php ld error by Maria is the only real issue, others are informative. * Open tickets sorted by update time https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=open&status=new… * Tickets for Review https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=new&status=open… Always looking for volunteer reviewers. Steve will work more on #2443. Zach will close #2432, it is fixed. Roland, usually assign ticket to important persons involved with the code. Minor ticket or enhancement Roland will not hassle people about the ticket and fix. * Working group updates Zach, do not have a group around LaTeX parser, but close to having BSSN in Cartesian coordinates as LaTeX able to parse into Sympy etc. Sanitizer for the LaTeX being made more robust and allowing for users to specify \xxxx LaTeX defs. Lie derivatives and covariant derivatives are supported using the macro language for the parser that show up as LaTeX comments, like % define hDD, for a tensor with two down indices. CarpetX update. Roland, Sam Cupp is working with CarpetX to learn it and add support for grid arrays and enhance existing grid interpolator interface. Goal to run binary black hole with carpetX and extract gravitational waves. First runs will be slow, but will check compatibility with current toolkit. * Spec Benchmarks Steve, did anyone do anything on this. Let us not forget about this. Add to agenda and copy forward so that we do this. We need the Spec benchmark. * External Thorns Steve, we do not like all the external thorns installed a different ways, endless other nuisances. Steve has a short script that installs the dependencies from Spack. Could do them all this way. If you have Git access, a user can install Spack. It will want to download code which one HPC blocks (?). In principle, you could compile elsewhere and move to the HPC. Steve is enthusiastic about Spack. Some clusters block its functionality, we think. Roland, we still need the external library thorns, and the all have a "lib" variable and that could be installed by Spack or by the usual methods. Cactus does interfere with some of this, the build scripts which show various hacks.
