Hello Roland, > Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and for thinking they look good. > I do think they would fit well on the wiki. Note that I was not thinking of transforming it into a wiki page, just link to the PDF file. >> Understood, that's a good idea. > I would be happy to provide the LaTeX source code and figure files > and am happy for the document to be built upon in the future - though > I would prefer for my name to be credited, as I'm sure you can > understand. Certainly, that is definitely expected. >> Perfect, thank you. > How would you like me to send the source code? Uh, good question ideally as a repository or you could also consider uploading it to the arXiv with a license that allows re-use (CC-BY or so which also satisfies the requirement of acknowledging the original author), which would add extra visibility to it (it does not need to be submitted to a journal for this). >> I'll work on uploading it to arXiv, and will let you know as soon as it's done. I agree that doing so would also add extra visibility - which is always good! Regards, Nick

New Einstein Toolkit Release (DeWitt-Morette)
by Roland Haas 30 Nov '20

30 Nov '20

Release Announcement Click here to read the announcement in HTML (with hyperlinks): https://einsteintoolkit.org/about/releases/ET_2020_11_announcement.html We are pleased to announce the twenty-first release (code name "DeWitt-Morette") of the Einstein Toolkit, an open-source, community developed software infrastructure for relativistic astrophysics. The highlights of this release are: * This release includes NRPyPN, a Python code to compute initial data parameters for binary black hole simulations. * Lean_Public supports curvilinear coordinates provided by Llama. * The include style ("old") Tmunu interface using thorn ADMCoupling has been removed. One new thorn has been added: * ReadInterpolate, a FileReader like thorn that uses InterolateLocalUniform to interpolate the data read in onto the new grid. In addition, bug fixes accumulated since the previous release in May 2020 have been included. The Einstein Toolkit is a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems that builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including code to compute initial data parameters, the spacetime evolution codes Baikal, lean_public, and McLachlan, analysis codes to compute horizon characteristics and gravitational waves, the Carpet AMR infrastructure, and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics codes GRHydro and IllinoisGRMHD. The Einstein Toolkit also contains a 1D self-force code. For parts of the toolkit, the Cactus Framework is used as the underlying computational infrastructure providing large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development. The Einstein Toolkit uses a distributed software model and its different modules are developed, distributed, and supported either by the core team of Einstein Toolkit Maintainers, or by individual groups. Where modules are provided by external groups, the Einstein Toolkit Maintainers provide quality control for modules for inclusion in the toolkit and help coordinate support. The Einstein Toolkit Maintainers currently involve staff and faculty from five different institutions, and host weekly meetings that are open for anyone to join. Guiding principles for the design and implementation of the toolkit include: open, community-driven software development; well thought-out and stable interfaces; separation of physics software from computational science infrastructure; provision of complete working production code; training and education for a new generation of researchers. For more information about using or contributing to the Einstein Toolkit, or to join the Einstein Toolkit Consortium, please visit our web pages at http://einsteintoolkit.org, or contact the users mailing list users(a)einsteintoolkit.org. The Einstein Toolkit is primarily supported by NSF 2004157/2004044/2004311/2004879/2003893 (Enabling fundamental research in the era of multi-messenger astrophysics). The Einstein Toolkit contains about 327 regression test cases. On a large portion of the tested machines, almost all of these tests pass, using both MPI and OpenMP parallelization. The changes between this and the previous release include: Larger changes since last release * Fully support gcc / gfortran 10 * ExternalLibraries support PAPI version 6 * Testsuite harness supports running multiple tests in parallel * Fix accidentally removed caching in Piaraha * Documentation uses mathjax when creating HTML docs * Cactus now checks that parameter types declared in USE and EXTEND statements match * Build system correctly propagates VERBOSE=no to sub-makes in make version 4.3 and newer * All tests that used to use ADMConstraints now use ML_ADMConstraints * Thorn Vectors supports POWER9 cpus used in Summit * Correct long standing read-after-free bug in Carpet's SplitAlongDir routine * Correct outputting non-gridfunction data in CarpetIOHDF5 * Implement correct "midpoint" rule in thorn Multipole * Fix interaction between thorn NewRad and Cartoon2D * All example parameter files include thorn SystemTopology * Support Python3 in GW150914 example parameter file * Support wide outer boundaries in lean_public and Baikal * Work around slow compilation with new gcc in Baikal Deprecated functionality The following features are being marked as deprecated in this release and will be removed in the next release * The "old" (include file based) interface to Tmunu provided by ADMCoupling is no longer included. * Non-piraha parser has been removed from CST. * ADMCoupling and ADMMacros will be removed in the next release * READS / WRITES statements that refer to non-existing variables cause compile time errors and are no longer ignored at runtime even if `presync_mode = off` Contributors This release includes contributions by Steven R. Brandt, Federico Cipolletta, Matthew Elley, Zachariah Etienne, Roland Haas, Ian Hinder, Jonah Miller, Erik Schnetter, Barry Wardell, Helvi Witek , and Miguel Zilhao. How to upgrade from Turing (ET_2020_05) To upgrade from the previous release, use GetComponents with the new thornlist to check out the new version. See the Download page (http://einsteintoolkit.org/download.html) on the Einstein Toolkit website for download instructions. The SelfForce-1D code uses a single git repository, thus using `git pull ; git checkout ET_2020_11` will update the code. Machine notes Supported (tested) machines include: * Default Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS 7, Mint, OpenSUSE and MacOS Catalina (MacPorts) installations * Bluewaters * Comet * Cori * Queen Bee 2 * Stampede 2 * Mike / Shelob * SuperMIC * SuperMUC-NG * Summit * Wheeler Note for individual machines: * TACC machines: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $WORK` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $WORK and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. * SuperMUC-NG: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $HOME` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $HOME and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. All repositories participating in this release carry a branch ET_2020_11 marking this release. These release branches will be updated if severe errors are found. The "DeWitt-Morette" Release Team on behalf of the Einstein Toolkit Consortium (2020-11-30) * Roland Haas * Steven R. Brandt * Rahime Matur * Beyhan Karakas * William E. Gabella * Miguel Gracia November, 2020

Re: [Users] Einstein toolkit Somerville release issue
by Roland Haas 30 Nov '20

Hello Karima, please use the Einstein Toolkit users mailing list users(a)einsteintoolkit.org if possible for support questions. It is usually also better to copy and paste the text of the error message rather than taking a screenshot since the former lets me copy and paste from what you entered while the latter requires me to retype evertyhing. In your case: * Sommerville is quite old (5 years) and not all options shown in the current tutorial notebook are supported * in particular the "-j" option to simfactory (to build in parallel using make's own "-j" option) is not supported * the easiest fix is to leave out the option "-j2" which will compile using 1 compilation process (so will be quite slow) Hope this helps. Yours, Roland > Dear professor Roland Haas, > > I am having an issue in installing the Somerville release 2015 of the Einstein toolkit on Ubuntu 20.04. Dear all users, I am installing the 'Somerville' released Einstein toolkit on Ubuntu 20.04. It gives below error in the building of ET using "simfactory". The error is below, Command: > %%bash > ./simfactory/bin/sim build -j2 --thornlist ../einsteintoolkit.th Error: CalledProcessError: > Command 'b'./simfactory/bin/sim build -j2 --thornlist ../einsteintoolkit.th\n'' returned non-zero exit status 2. Thanks in advance for any kind support. Regards ....

Hello Roland, Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and for thinking they look good. I do think they would fit well on the wiki. I would be happy to provide the LaTeX source code and figure files and am happy for the document to be built upon in the future - though I would prefer for my name to be credited, as I'm sure you can understand. How would you like me to send the source code? Kind regards, Nick Nicholas Choustikov Fitzwilliam College University of Cambridge ________________________________ From: Roland Haas Sent: Tuesday, November 24, 2020 19:56 To: Nick Choustikov Cc: users(a)einsteintoolkit.org Subject: Re: [Users] Student's Tutorial for the Einstein Toolkit Hello Nick, those look very nice and documentation is always very welcome. We collect some extra documentation (eg recordings of the tutorial, Miguel and Frank's Intro to the ET paper) on the wiki: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Main_Page#Documentation Would your's fit in there? Would you possibly consider putting the documentation under some sort of open source license and making the source code available so that it can be build upon in the future? Black hole formation in cosmological background
by Hassan Khalvati 24 Nov '20

24 Nov '20

Dear All, I hope you are doing well during the COVID19 pandemic. I want to solve the gr-hydro equations in 3+1 formalism and simulate the black hole formation in the *cosmological background *(primordial black holes in the radiation dominated universe). I was wondering to ask if it is *possible to do that using the Einstein Toolkit (or potentially the NRPy+)* and if anyone could guide me with this problem. I guess that the thorns provided with the ET are mostly for the asymptotically flat space-times (if not, correct me please) and I am not sure if it is straightforward to use them considering the FRW metric. The formulation I would like to use is based on Shibata and Sasaki's work in 1999 (http://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/9905064v1). Thank you for your time. Student's Tutorial for the Einstein Toolkit
by Nick Choustikov 24 Nov '20

24 Nov '20

Dear all, My name is Nicholas and I'm an Undergraduate Astrophysics student at the University of Cambridge. I've spent the past summer learning to use and experimenting with the Einstein Toolkit. I think it's an incredible tool and resource. I have therefore produced a tutorial (attached below) for students who wish to learn to use the Toolkit. It contains some extra information that I would have found helpful. I would be very happy for the document to be published on the Toolkit website - where it can reach (and help!) the most people. Please let me know if you have any queries. Kind regards, Nicholas Choustikov Nicholas Choustikov Fitzwilliam College University of Cambridge

Present: Samuel C, Bill G, Roland H, Peter D, Miguel G, Zach E, Steve B, Yosef Z, Maria BH, Ken S Chair: Samuel C Minutes: Bill G * SPEC benchmark contribution [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2470 task] [RH, SB] Steve, Assume no one has done anything yet, but to keep on the agenda. Should start in December. * upcoming release planning (1.5 weeks to go, -1 weeks to feature freeze, -1 weeks to have everything reviewed) [RH] Roland, weeks to go, freeze was last week, no more changes. Name is as below. Nov 30th is the release, Monday after Thanksgiving. Gallery examples, two are finished and uploaded, BNS and scalar wave example. Work by Miguel and Steve. Miguel, has uploaded everything. Steve, trying to get the Mathematica setup right. Needs to have a couple of different packages installed and X windows. Have not had luck with LSU running X11 back to his machine. Will try to get around any firewalls, or go into the office. Tried downloading to laptop on Windows partition will not run SimulationTools executable from Windows. Steve wants a Python script to make the plots. Done in the next week. Bill, has run Poisson and looks fine. Made the Visit plot. ** release name: DeWitt-Morette https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9cile_DeWitt-Morette Besides physics and mathematics, she is famous for starting the Les Houches School of Physics, https://www.houches-school-physics.com/en/ . ** release date: November 30th ** Gallery test runners search [[Release Details]] [RH] *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2175/test-single-stabl… Single, stable neutron star] [Miguel Gracia] (done) *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2174/test-multi-patch-… Multi Patch Scalar Wave Equation] [Rahime Matur] (done) *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2173/test-poisson-equa… Poisson equation] [Bill Gabella] (in progress) *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2176/test-binary-neutr… Binary neutron star] [Beyhan Karakaş] (done) *** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2172/test-binary-black… Binary black hole GW150914] [Steve Brandt] (in progress) ** release testsuite [http://einsteintoolkit.org/testsuite_results/index.php status] Roland, Not a lot of news. Did re-run on supported clusters, fixed the two punctures failure, it required running with higher resolution. Fixed a bug in Carpet's flipped in one direction. Affected the PETSc test on Queen Bee. Golub cluster has the largest number of failures, is using Intel and Slurm. Stampede does better than Golub. Maybe Intel compiler is defaulting to more agressive compilation. Roland, drafted a release announcement and Maintainers should have a copy. Please read and make comments. Two persons are new: Jonah Miller (doc Kranc) and Matthew Ely (Llama support). If there are others please tell Roland so he can get permissions and their names in the Zenodo and citation. ** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?milestone=ET_2020_11&s… Tickets marked for the upcoming release] ** [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?kind=bug&priority=majo… Open bugs of severity major or worse] Roland, Tkt #2479 has existed for some time and .. You can depend on parameters of Thorns that are not active, which it should not. Saw in some of the testsuite tests. Thorn needed to compile even if not used in calculation. Not a crucial bug. * [https://www.einsteintoolkit.org/tools/unanswered.php unanswered question on mailing list] / [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=open&status=new… open tickets sorted by update time] / [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=new&status=open… tickets ready for review] * any other business Steve, we are not meeting next week, Thanksgiving in the US. Next meeting Thursday December 3rd---Roland is chair and Miguel is minute taker. Zach, LaTeX parser update with Ken. Working on parsing the BSSN equations as exist in Baumgarte's Spherical NR and Baikal. Mostly functionally where we need to be. Working on the documentation. Also a nice Unit Testing infrastructure---cannot rely on Sympy simplification being very deterministic, so created a novel method involving hashing symbols into high precision numbers. Using Sympy's multiprecision math. Used to evaluate that expressions are equivalent. Roland, Probing with floating point numbers, what about exact math, fractions, etc. Zach, good idea. -- ============================== William Gabella Research Assistant Professor Department of Physics and Astronomy Nashville, TN USA (o) 615-343-2713
