Dear all, The application deadline line for Los Alamos ISTI/ASC Co-Design Summer School on kilonovae from Neutron Star Mergers has been extended to February 26th. Graduate students in relativistic astrophysics, applied mathematics, and parallel algorithms are encouraged to apply. Details of the application process are listed here: http://losalamos.github.io/cdss/apply.html Please share with anyone who might be interested. - Oleg Korobkin --- Postdoctoral Researcher Los Alamos National Lab 505-695-8489 (c) 505-665-9692 (w) On 7 December 2015 at 09:24, Oleg Korobkin <korobkin(a)cct.lsu.edu<mailto:ian.hinder@aei.mpg.de>> wrote: Dear all, I would like to advertise the Co-Design Summer School which will take place at Los Alamos, NM next summer, sometimes from mid-May to mid-September 2016 (exact dates TBD). The scientific challenge of choice for this year is modeling neutron star mergers and their kilonovae -- supernova-like transients that accompany these dramatic cosmic cataclisms. Reading Carpet output from Julia
by Erik Schnetter 08 Feb '16

08 Feb '16

David Radice and I recently discussed reading Carpet HDF5 data into Julia <http://julialang.org>. A few weeks ago, I converted a Python visualization script to Julia. This was quite easy to do, and I thus thought I'd post it here for others to see. The Julia script is an Ipython (now: Jupyter) notebook. The link below should lead to a tarball in my Google Drive folder that anybody can download. In addition to the script, there is also some sample Carpet output that the script uses to create a movie, as well as the movie itself that is generated by the script. <https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz4t5SPjhOSSN28wQjlMODgwaWs/view?usp=shari…> This isn't a cleaned-up example that's easy to use, but rather a straight copy of the script I'm using to experiment with the data. I hope it works for others (after adapting the obvious path names in the script). If you find it interesting and encounter problems, I'll be happy to help, and if this is generally useful, it could probably be cleaned up into a much nicer example. Enjoy, -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Cactus & HDF5: checkpoint recovery failure with ?
by Bernard Kelly 02 Feb '16

02 Feb '16

Hi all. I'm having checkpoint/recovery issues with a particular simulation: An initial short run stopped some time after iteration 32000, leaving me with checkpoints at it 30000 & 32000. I found I couldn't recover from the later of these, but as the earlier one *did* allow recovery, I didn't worry too much about it. Now the recovered run went until some time after it 124000. I again have two sets of checkpoint data, from it 122000 and 124000. *Neither* of these work. I could imagine the later one being corrupted somehow because of disk space issues, but both? In each case, the error output in the STDERR consists of multiple instances of the message below. * Is this likely due to file corruption? * What's the best way to check CarpetIOHDF5 files for corruption? * Can I do anything about this particular run, apart from start (again) from the "good" 30000 checkpoint? Einstein Toolkit School and Workshop (13-17 June 2016, Trento, Italy)
by Eloisa Bentivegna 01 Feb '16

01 Feb '16

Dear colleagues, as mentioned today during the weekly call, we would like to announce that registration for the upcoming Einstein Toolkit EU Summer School and Workshop is now open. The school and workshop will take place in Trento from June 13th to 17th, 2016. Please visit the event page http://events.unitn.it/en/et-eu2016 to submit your registration. Participation, as always, is free of charge, but the school is limited to the first 20 students who sign up. Workshop participants who would like to contribute to the program may propose a title for a short talk. The registration deadline for either section is May 27th. We hope to see many of you in Trento this summer! Should you have any questions regarding registration, travel, or accommodation, feel free to contact one of the organizers. Eloisa Bentivegna (University of Catania, Italy) Riccardo Ciolfi (University of Trento, Italy) Bruno Giacomazzo (University of Trento, Italy) Frank Loeffler (Louisiana State University, USA)

Poll for possible change in time for weekly call
by Frank Loeffler 25 Jan '16

25 Jan '16

Hi, Some of the participants do have conflicts with the time for the regular Einstein Toolkit call on Mondays, 10am US central time. Therefore, I would like to ask which other potential times could be used instead, and created a Doodle poll: http://doodle.com/poll/kbzwe3nsb35zzakh The results of this poll will be used to decide about a possible change in time, with the old time getting priority in case of ties (or close ties). Note that the poll has been created time-zone enabled. Assuming your doodle-setup is correct (uses your time-zone), you should be able to select local times. Frank

Weekly Meeting Venue
by Frank Loeffler 12 Jan '16

12 Jan '16

Hi, Due to today's and past problem with the phone line, we wondered if another venue for the weekly call would provide better quality, while still being a stable solution. Google Hangouts in particular were mentioned. The most severe limitation that came up in today's discussion (in such a hangout) was the limit to 10 participants. We rarely, but sometimes, exceed that. Another potential down-side is that you might have to use (and thus, have) an account with Google. Before we try switching to a Google Hangout as regular venue for the call, we would like to ask the community: - Would this be a prevent *you* from calling in? If so, why? - Are there any other potential down-sides we might not have thought of? - Are there better alternatives? Frank Loeffler

Reading multiple CarpetIHDF5 files into VisIt
by Bernard Kelly 11 Jan '16

11 Jan '16

Hi all. Follow-up to my question last week about *outputting* CarpetIOHDF5 3D data as files separated by time (iteration), rather than processor. Now I want to read them into VisIt, and I'm having problems. Specifically, I have a set of, say, 10 files with names like alp.it_00000.xyz.h5 alp.it_00100.xyz.h5 alp.it_00200.xyz.h5 . . . alpha.it_00900.xyz.h5 I can open each file individually as type CarpetHDF5 and produce a PseudoColor/IsoSurface plot. However, when I load them all as a grouping ("smart", hand-picked, or using a .visit file), the result only shows me the first time step --- the play/fast-forward/etc buttons are greyed out and unresponsive. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? From the VisIt documentation/forums I've seen, if I can load the data as a group, the time steps should be recognized immediately, but perhaps I'm missing a step, or something about the CarpetHDF5 file type doesn't allow this. Thanks, Bernard

How do I get the global integer coordinates for a grid point (i.e. the ones that take into account refinement level)? Cheers, Steve
