Reverted ExternalLibraries/HDF5 to earlier version
by Erik Schnetter 24 Jun '15

24 Jun '15

I notice the HDF5 didn't build any more on Stampede and Zwicky. The symptoms are errors like these: /work/00507/eschnett/Cvanilla/arrangements/PITTNullCode/SphericalHarmonicDecomp/src/ExtractMetric.cc(38): catastrophic error: cannot open source file "hdf5.h" #include <hdf5.h> ^ It seems that HDF5's "detect.sh" does not work correctly. Cactus seems to make no attempt to build HDF5. For the time being, I've reverted the recent changes to thorn HDF5. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

a question about the WeylScal4 thorn
by Vassilios Mewes 23 Jun '15

23 Jun '15

Hello all, I have a quick question about the GW extraction using the WeylScal4 thorn in the Einstein Toolkit. The thorn uses the description of http://journals.aps.org/prd/pdf/10.1103/PhysRevD.65.044001 to calculate the Weyl scalar, right? (which seems to be the same as described in the numerical relativity book by Baumgarte and Shapiro, if I am not mistaken).. Is this way of calculating the Weyl scalar equivalent to the one that uses the electric and magnetic part of the Weyl tensor (like for instance in the Book by Alcubierre or in i.e. http://arxiv.org/pdf/0910.3803v1.pdf)? It seems that the method implemented in the ET has extra factors of R_{ijkl} compared to the one using the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. thanks a lot, Vassili

Cleaning up branch names
by Erik Schnetter 16 Jun '15

16 Jun '15

I notice that some of our repositories (e.g. for the flesh) have accumulated quite a number of branches. Some of these are historic (dragged along from cvs!), some are outdated (last commit was 2013), others are active. I suggest to clean them up. First, I'd like to propose that people who create a new branch should use their name as prefix (e.g. "eschnett/"); in this way, people have all the freedom they need when creating branches without creating confusion with umpteen scheduler-related branches. If you already have a branch, consider renaming it; renaming a branch does not lose any information. At some point in the future, we may rename all the historic branches via an "attic/" prefix, so that the currently active an interesting branches stand out. Also, the multitude of ET_ and Cactus_ branches is becoming noisy. Using a release/ prefix may help. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Problem with build after git pull
by Comer Duncan 16 Jun '15

16 Jun '15

Today I did a git pull and tried to build ET dev. It crashed with references to hdf5 as is shown in the pastebin: http://pastebin.com/EdqqhdE0 . Note that I am using the HDF5_DIR = BUILD option and have checked that mpi and gcc are compatible (the versions from macports). I have removed hdf5 from active ports some time ago. So can developers please let me know what might be going on? Thanks very much. Comer

Meeting Minutes
by Roland Haas 15 Jun '15

15 Jun '15

Hello all, Present today were Peter, Steven, Frank, Roland, Chritine, Josh. Current issues: * requirements based scheduler ** currently in design stage using blackboards and face to face meetings ** work done by Dennis and Steve most of it stand alone ** goal is to get wavetoy type system to schedule itself based on requiremnts. ** if sufficiently advanced discuss at ET workshop ** suggestion to put even design plan into wiki even if in form of just a phot of the blackboard ** want to not "surprise" people with a finished product Announcements: * Peter will host the calls starting from the next call until end of July Yours, Roland

Kranc docs/papers updated?
by Comer Duncan 14 Jun '15

14 Jun '15

I am wanting to write a thorn using Kranc. I have the two papers 0404023 and 0411063 and am wondering whether the material therein is compatible with say Hilbert? Also, are there other docs that are not on gr-qc which would be useful to read? Or does one just begin by looking at the examples and then try to craft a thorn? Thanks. Comer

Abort on unexpected process or thread configuration
by Ian Hinder 11 Jun '15

11 Jun '15

Hi all, Carpet supports environment variables CACTUS_NUM_PROCS CACTUS_NUM_THREADS which, if set, indicate the number of MPI processes and the number of threads per process that were expected. Carpet uses these to check that the actual number of processes started, and the actual number of threads, are correct, since it is very easy to get these wrong due to interactions with scheduling systems, different MPI implementations, different command-line options etc. If the variables are unset, Carpet does nothing. However, if they have been set, Carpet currently prints a warning if there is a mismatch. I think, and Erik agrees, that this should instead be a fatal error which aborts the simulation on startup. If you use simfactory, it often (depending on the machine runscript) sets these variables. If it is getting it wrong for a particular machine, the number of threads and processes could be wrong, which usually leads to a severe performance penalty which might go unnoticed if you don't check carefully. I will make this change in Carpet in the development version, and this might lead to simulations aborting on startup if the configuration is wrong. In that case, the configuration, usually in the machine run script, should be fixed. Hopefully this change will make things more robust and easier to debug. -- Ian Hinder http://members.aei.mpg.de/ianhin
