Spatial refinement factors
by Lorenzo Cipriani 05 Feb '24

05 Feb '24

Dear all, I have a brief question. I am trying to initialize a run with two very small stars (radius of ~300m) whose centers are at 750m from the origin; since I need a very fine grid, I am trying to use a refinement factor different from 2. In particular I am setting the Carpet::space_refinement_factors variable equal to [ [1,1,1], [5,5,5], ...] but I get the following error message: CarpetLib::dh::regrid(bool): Assertion `all(reffact == 2)' failed. This also happens if I change the Carpet::refinement_factor. Am I missing some obvious setting? Thank you very much for your help! Best, Lorenzo Cipriani

Parameter file for a binary BH merger immersed in a scalar field
by Samuel Gómez 01 Feb '24

01 Feb '24

Hi! My name is Samuel Gómez, physics student doing his master in Uppsala university, Sweden. Currently I am doing my master thesis with Joshua Eby from Stockholm University about the phenomenology of Gravitational Atoms around Neutron Stars and Black Holes. I would like to perform numerical simulations for a BH binary merger around a scalar cloud with EinsteinToolkit. From now, I have been able to simulate the example of the TOV star given in the EinteinToolkit official page in my laptop and soon I will gain access to a computer cluster where I hopefully will be able to install the Toolkit and perform a simulation for the example of a binary merger. But my aim is to be able to perform, maybe in its simplest version, a simulation of a merger around a scalar field, extracting information about both the evolution of the BHs and the scalar field itself. The problem I face is that I am not sure at all if I will be able to do it without any parameter file. As far as I understood, my current version of the Toolkit already has installed thorns related with the implementation of a scalar field (if I am not mistaken, one example is ScalarBase). I thus send this email asking if it is possible to obtain a parameter file for simulating this scenario, or to provide me with any information about an existing tutorial on how to write one. Something like this would help me a lot. I would appreciate any answer. Thanks!

Present: Roland, Peter, Steve, Zach, Bing-Ran HE, Leo, Sam, Shenfei, Yosef ET release: * discussed possible modules for inclusion, updated release timeline https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details#Schedule ** GRHayL enabled IL-GRMHD ** tabulated EOS in GRHayLlib ** update Baikal to NRPy 2.0 ** possible FUKA updates * reviewers for ID thorns needed * Gallery runners: ** ask Deborah about BBH ** ask Peter for TOV ** Steve will try local students for a gallery example (Max Morris) ET US Meeting: * proposed time June 3 - 7 * organizing committee members (desired): ** Steve, Peter (local) ** Yosef (prior US meeting) ** Roland (general?), Zach (LIGO) ** Philipp (EU ET meeting) Cactus build system: * Steve brought up state of Cactus build system * possibility of moving over to cmake which is a more modern system compared to autoconf, of which we use an old, essentially unsupported version * would still require CST code for auto-generated code * possibility cmake and IDEs may be able to better understand where code comes from and what is auto-generated * some prior discussion: https://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2023-April/008911.html Unanswered questions: https://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2024-January/009196.html * discussed attempts by Robyn to make things build on Sciama * Steve took at look no specific solution suggestion Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Hi all, Please find the minutes for today’s meeting below. Cheers, Leo Chair: Zach Minutes: Leo Present: Zach, Leo, Peter, Steve, Roland, Wenhao, Xinyue, Yosef, Bing-Ran HE Next ET Release: - Managers: Roland & Steve - Steve created a release schedule https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details#Schedule - Tomorrow is the initial deadline for proposing functionality to include, but likely will have to be pushed. - BNS simulations still do not work; results are completely different, even in the very beginning. - Roland: is this the first release where the resolution of the simulation was made "sane"? Steve: I didn't change the resolution, simply ran the example following the instructions on the website. - Zach: What release have we been using on our latest runs? Leo: May 2023. Steve: Have you ran the gallery example? Leo: No. Zach: It wouldn't hurt to do it. Leo will launch gallery example for the past two releases. - Elliptica: No one heard from Alireza since the May 2023 release. Release managers may revive the ticket to check if there are any updates. Unanswered Questions on the Mailing List: - None Open Tickets: - POWER: Zach will create a ticket to discuss stylistic issues, as well as errors in the documentation. Additional Topics: - Summer Schools: Steve will host the US one this year. There were proposed dates, but these were rejected. ------ Leonardo R. Summer 2024 internships at IBM Research
by eloisa.bentivegna 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

Hi everyone, I would like to share the opportunity below, which may be of interest to PhD students finishing their degrees this spring (or able to take a summer break). Candidates from Numerical Relativity would be very welcome. Any questions can be directed to me. Best regards, Eloisa ---------------------------------------------------------------- IBM Research Europe (UK) is offering 3-month internships for PhD students interested in experiencing its research environment in Summer 2024. Applicants should either have just graduated from a doctoral-level course, or be enrolled in one and eligible to take a break to undertake an industrial placement. Applications can be submitted at https://krb-sjobs.brassring.com/TGnewUI/Search/home/HomeWithPreLoad?PageTyp… A background in Physics is required. Proficiency with scientific AI/ML and hands on experience with HPC systems would be a plus. The deadline for full consideration is 4-Feb-2024, but we will continue to assess candidates until all posts are filled. ----------------------------------------------------------------
