Issue with AHFinderDirect thorn
by Hector L Iglesias 04 Jun '22

04 Jun '22

Hello, I am running a BBH simulation with the latest ETK release (the Johnson release) using some local thorns, and I'm encountering this particular error: WARNING level 0 from host chaac.cns.utexas.edu process 0 while executing schedule bin CCTK_POSTSTEP, routine AHFinderDirect::AHFinderDirect_find_horizons in thorn AHFinderDirect, file /home/hli75/Cactus/configs/etabeta/build/AHFinderDirect/jtutil/error_exit.cc:78: -> ***** row_sparse_Jacobian__UMFPACK::solve_linear_system(): error return status=1 from umfpack_numeric() routine WIth a previous version of ETK, it is working fine. Is there something I can do to correct this? I've attached the .out and .par files for the simulation below. Thank you! Hector Iglesias

Yosef: NS-NS gallery example giving NaNs at iteration 0 is failing but only particular machines. -New release will be announce later today. -Release manager search for next release: Roland will do it for the November release with Peter D. support. -Modules suggested for inclusion for next release Self force (Peter will review it), FLRW-solver (probably), Zach NRPy elliptic initial data Thorn. Similar to twoPunctures. Fully documented and ready for inclusion for next release. * ET CI server<https://rhaas80.github.io/einsteintoolkit> improvements [RH] Jenkins went away, Roland’s old student set up using github actions, suggestion are welcome to improve, Roland’s student has 8 weeks to work on this. Zach want to know more about the Et testing system, Roland suggest to have a discussion after or during the summer school. • ET summer school<https://einsteintoolkit.github.io/et2022uidaho> at Idaho Missing some participants transportation and LIGO field responses. In order to be considered we encourage participants to do so. Still missing abstracts, we encourage presenters to send their abstract. Proof of vaccination and booster are required to get access to LIGO facilities. - hackathon topics hackathon<https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_hackathon> topics ticketing system and propose any of the open tickets as topic. - Zach: Need volunteers to help moderating letting people in to zoom sessions. • We would like to promote NR community summer school at brown Aug 8-12. For more information: NR community summer school<http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2022-May/008504.html> * move ET call to different timeslot<https://ekohaes8.ncsa.illinois.edu/~rhaas/doodle.html> due to scheduling conflicts [RH]: best options are Mon 9am, 10am, Thu 8am, 9am, 10am, best to keep current slot Thu 9am * Unanswered question on mailing list: Issue with AHFinderDirect thorn: Yosef thinks he has seen similar errors related with the AH position with respect to the origin. Suggested to check the parameter file and the regriding parameter. Expanse testing- might be a bug in simfactory, Roland will answered and the fix will be included in the release. * Open tickets hackathon will not need registration, announcement will be sent separately. #ticket #2601 under review by Roland. * Other: Beyhan: In BBH gallery example, only two refinement levels why not three?. Zach: Two centres are enough. Carpet merges the two refinement leves at the origin when the third BH appears so no need to include a third one. For BNS is better to have two ref levels that combine and form a big enclosing box to avoid matter fluxes in the refinement boundaries. Use trigger thorn to add more refinement levels when a BH forms. Next calls: Chair: Beyhan Minutes: Johnny end of the call

New Einstein Toolkit Release (Riemann)
by Yosef Zlochower 02 Jun '22

02 Jun '22

Release Announcement Click here to read the announcement in HTML (with hyperlinks): https://einsteintoolkit.org/about/releases/ET_2022_05_announcement.html We are pleased to announce the twenty-fourth release (code name "Bernhard Riemann") of the Einstein Toolkit, an open-source, community developed software infrastructure for relativistic astrophysics. The major changes in this release include: * Long-standing default parameters issues were fixed. * Support for CareptX included in the Cactus Flesh. * Parts of Carpet re-written with modern C++. * When using either g++ or icpc, gcc version 6 or higher is now required. In addition, bug fixes accumulated since the previous release in November 2021 have been included. The Einstein Toolkit is a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems that builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including code to compute initial data parameters, the spacetime evolution codes Baikal, lean_public, and McLachlan, analysis codes to compute horizon characteristics and gravitational waves, the Carpet AMR infrastructure, and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics codes GRHydro and IllinoisGRMHD. The Einstein Toolkit also contains a 1D self-force code. For parts of the toolkit, the Cactus Framework is used as the underlying computational infrastructure providing large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development. The Einstein Toolkit uses a distributed software model and its different modules are developed, distributed, and supported either by the core team of Einstein Toolkit Maintainers, or by individual groups. Where modules are provided by external groups, the Einstein Toolkit Maintainers provide quality control for modules for inclusion in the toolkit and help coordinate support. The Einstein Toolkit Maintainers currently involve staff and faculty from five different institutions, and host weekly meetings that are open for anyone to join. Guiding principles for the design and implementation of the toolkit include: open, community-driven software development; well thought-out and stable interfaces; separation of physics software from computational science infrastructure; provision of complete working production code; training and education for a new generation of researchers. For more information about using or contributing to the Einstein Toolkit, or to join the Einstein Toolkit Consortium, please visit our web pages at http://einsteintoolkit.org, or contact the users mailing list users(a)einsteintoolkit.org. The Einstein Toolkit is primarily supported by NSF 2004157/2004044/2004311/2004879/2003893 (Enabling fundamental research in the era of multi-messenger astrophysics). The Einstein Toolkit contains about 327 regression test cases. On a large portion of the tested machines, almost all of these tests pass, using both MPI and OpenMP parallelization. Contributors This release includes contributions by * Maria C. Babiuc Hamilton * Gabriele Bozzola * Steven R. Brandt * Zachariah B. Etienne * William E. Gabella * Roland Haas * Wolfgang Kastaun * Patrick Nelson * Erik Schnetter * Ken Sible * Leonardo Werneck How to upgrade from Johnson Release (ET_2021_11) To upgrade from the previous release, use GetComponents with the new thornlist to check out the new version. See the Download page (http://einsteintoolkit.org/download.html) on the Einstein Toolkit website for download instructions. The SelfForce-1D code uses a single git repository, thus using git pull; git checkout ET_2022_05 will update the code. To install Kuibit, do the following: pip install --user -U kuibit==1.3.4 Machine notes Supported (tested) machines include: * Default Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Mint, OpenSUSE and MacOS Monterey (MacPorts) installations * Expanse * Queen Bee 2 * Queen Bee 3 * Stampede 2 * Sunrise * SuperMUC-NG * Summit Note for individual machines: * TACC machines: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $WORK` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $WORK and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. * SuperMUC-NG: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $HOME` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $HOME and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. All repositories participating in this release carry a branch ET_2022_05 marking this release. These release branches will be updated if severe errors are found. The "Bernhard Riemann" Release Team on behalf of the Einstein Toolkit Consortium (2022-05-31) * Yosef Zlochower, * Steven R. Brandt, * Peter Diener, * William E. Gabella, * Miguel Gracia-Linares, * Roland Haas, * Atul Kedia May 29, 2022

Isotropic Initial Data Evolving Towards Anisotropy
by Nick Olsen 30 May '22

30 May '22

Hello Everyone I am running into a problem where I evolve a Gaussian shell scalar field alongside the BSSN equations using the Scalar/ScalarInit/ScalarBase thorns, where the initial data is isotropic but evolves to an anisotropic solution. More specifically, along the x axis I have g_yy=g_zz and along the z axis I have g_xx=g_yy, with g_xx along the x axis equal to g_zz along the z axis, despite having isotropic initial conditions. The point is illustrated by the first image being the plot of g_xx and g_zz along their respective axes at a later time, and the rest of the diagonal metric values being shown in the second image. Additionally, T_ij shows a similar problem, where T_xx along the x axis and T_zz along the z axis are equal to eachother, but not the rest of the diagonal entries of T_ij, which are all equal. [image: gxxx.PNG][image: gxxz.PNG] I have attached the parameter file used to get these results, which is a modified version of the test parameter file found in the Scalar thorn bundle. Thanks, Nicholas Olsen
