Aha! VisIt 2.8.0 *works*, but 2.8.2 *doesn't*.
Gah. I suppose I should tell them they've broken something.
2.8.2 works for me (at least the version that I compiled myself, and reading in a 2d hdf5 file hydrobase::vel.xy.h5).
