Erik, I had originally asked on the mailing list, with the message "questions on CarpetIOASCII" sent on 10 Oct 2011.
Yes, it can be difficult to gather momentum for some changes... In my experience, this means that most people don't care about the change, and that some people won't like it but don't speak up, and that overall no one expects the change to happen unless a few people speak up for it.
