Hi,
Is there an existing reader of Cactus data files for VisIt? I ask because I have VisIt installed on my mac and VisIt has a volume viz option built in which I'd like to try on some ET data sets. Also I have downloaded yt and would like to know whether anyone has written a reader of ET data files for yt? I seem to recall on this list recently someone was going to look into using yt for ET, but don't know how far along this is as yet. Please clue me in.

Assuming you have a recent version of visit, the Carpet hdf5 reader should be build in.

There is some documentation here: < http://cactuscode.org/documentation/visualization/VisIt/%3E. Please complain if it is outdated.

Hi Erik,
I got it. Here is what I see when running install:
ComerMacProRetina:CarpetHDF5 comerduncan$ ls total 280 -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 882 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 4263 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5CommonPluginInfo.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 3128 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5EnginePluginInfo.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 2800 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5MDServerPluginInfo.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 7006 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5PluginInfo.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 4303 Jun 4 19:49 CarpetHDF5PluginInfo.h -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 483 Jun 4 19:49 H5Index.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 149 Jun 4 19:49 H5Index.h -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 3689 Jun 4 19:49 README.TXT -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 52178 Jun 4 19:49 avtCarpetHDF5FileFormat.C -rw-r--r-- 1 comerduncan admin 33519 Jun 4 19:49 avtCarpetHDF5FileFormat.h -rwxr-xr-x 1 comerduncan admin 183 Jun 4 19:49 install* ComerMacProRetina:CarpetHDF5 comerduncan$ ./install make: *** No rule to make target `clean'. And here are the xml beasts on my system right now:
ComerMacProRetina:CarpetHDF5 comerduncan$ xml xml2-config xml2po xmlcatmgr xmllint xmlpatternsvalidator xmlwf xml2man xmlcatalog xmlif xmlpatterns xmlto
Neither xmledit nor xml2cmake are on my system.
I don't enjoy complaining... so tell me there is a simple way around these issues :).

Are you sure the reader isn't already part of your visit installation?
You should be able to download an executable for Mac OS from here:
https://wci.llnl.gov/simulation/computer-codes/visit/executables
and it should have the Carpet HDF5 reader built in. You will need to enable HDF5 output for the variables you want to look at in your parameter file, e.g. with something like
IOHDF5::out_every = 16 # iterations IOHDF5::out_vars = "ML_BSSN::phi" # Conformal factor
This is for 3D output. You can also output 1D and 2D slices, but if you want to do volume rendering, I guess it's 3D you are after.

Jonah Miller, Kacper Kowalik and I had a sprint on this last week at NCSA. We're updating the wiki page as we proceed:
https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/yt
but the upshot is that right now we are still finishing handling all the different permutations of boundary conditions, and then it should be workable in a beta state.
