I would like to check out the documentation and example thorns in the default Einstein Toolkit thorn list. Since these are not proper thorns, their CHECKOUT statements must be commented out so that Cactus does not try to build these thorns. This leads to a clumsy syntax -- but we can correct this later.
Are there other pseudo-thorns that I am missing?

Please review this patch.
Without this patch, people have to go into the git-repos/carpet etc. directories to build the documentation, and the Cactus "make *-doc" commands don't work. I would like to include it into the release.

I don't know a syntax for this.
The thorns need to be outside comments, so that Cactus builds them. The documentation needs to be inside comments, so that they are not mistaken to be thorns by Cactus.
For McLachlan, the best I (actually it was Roland) could come up with is
