Hi,
I am sorry to inform you that the Einstein Toolkit mailing lists were not working correctly for the period of one week (details below). Emails still made it to the lists, to the archives, but not out to the members of the lists again. As far as I can see no one was unsubscribed, but instead set to 'nomail'.
As you can read this email now, this was fixed. Please let me know if you still have issues with any of the Einstein Toolkit lists.
Old emails will not be re-sent to the email lists. In order to see what was sent to the users mailing list in April, please consult the archives:

I again would like to apologize for the outage,
Frank Loeffler
Technical details (only read on if you _really_ want to know):
About a week ago, the university firewall admins apparently blocked outgoing mail traffic (port 25) for the special group of machines the ET server is in - without notice to anyone, not even the department admins. This would have been noticed earlier, if not most machines in that group either relayed through an "official" mailserver anyway, or used IPv6 (which the university forgot to block). The ET machine was one of the unlucky machines that tried IPv4, and didn't relay: it ran into timeouts for every outgoing mail, eventually leading to bounces, which eventually lead to the 'nomail' status on the mailing lists. This usually produces a loud scream to the list admins, but that is sent via email... In addition I missed a direct email from one of the ET maintainers notifying us of the issue because I didn't have a good internet connection unexpectedly. Murphy's Law.
After figuring this all out (we don't have a "direct line" to the university admins as you'd think, just the department admins), we decided to use the relay.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for fixing it. I think the problem goes back much longer than 1 week. I am missing emails from 27th March onwards.

Hi,
I enabled some spam filtering on the ET mailing lists. This became necessary because otherwise moderation is not possible anymore. The only reason no spam made it to the list is this moderation, and the "signal to noise" just got too high: the price of being visible.
Please let me know if you encounter problems with the filtering (e.g. your messages don't arrive at the list). I would expect a little bit of tuning to be necessary.
Frank

Since one could already only post while being subscribed to the list, does that mean that even mails from "known" (ie subscribed) mail addresses (yes this can be spoofed) will be subject to the spam check?

Emails from non-subscribers were (and are still) held in a moderation queue, that a normal member doesn't see. It is these queues that simply got too noisy with spam to prevent an effective manual sorting.
Yes, all mail now goes through the spam filter. However, it was trained with the last 4-5 years of 'good traffic' on the list...

Details (again, only if you care):
spamassassin score >10: drop > 5: moderation Mailing list members get 2 point bonus (-2).
These numbers can easily be tweaked. I am mostly attacking the obvious spam emails that arrive their in the tens each day.

Having said that: if this filter turns out to be good enough we might open the list to non-subscribers entirely. Wouldn't that be nice...

Hello Frank,
Thank you very much for fixing this. . .
I am quite busy finishing my last MS CS course and working with SAP Labs but I hope to contribute / help with some of the issues I've seen on the mailing list when I have some free time.
