Fwd: [Commits] [svn:einsteintoolkit] manifest/trunk/ (Rev. 38)
by Erik Schnetter 17 Sep '10

Yes, this seems like a good idea. There needs to be an "automatic" upgrade path, so that people with the current checkout can just use (the existing) GetComponents to get the new version; if this is not possible, there should be an error message. On the other hand, if the existing version is deleted from svn, and the new version then not correctly checked out, this is inconvenient... -erik On Fri, Sep 17, 2010 at 6:59 PM, Eric Seidel <eric(a)eseidel.org> wrote: > Did you use the version from github? I was getting the exact same error with the svn trunk version, which was due to a bad assumption that !CHECKOUT would contain something of the form "xxx/yyy". What I could do is recommit the working version of GetComponents to svn for now, until there can be a more stable transition to git? > > Eric > > > On Sep 17, 2010, at 6:52 PM, Erik Schnetter wrote: > >> Eric >> >> I reverted your last two commits, since the new thorn list didn't work >> for me. GetComponents moved to GitHub
by Eric Seidel 17 Sep '10

17 Sep '10

Hi all, Since GetComponents was designed to be separate from Cactus and the Einstein Toolkit, I have decided to move GetComponents to GitHub for hosting. The new project page is http://github.com/gridaphobe/GetComponents. It also has a nice new wiki and issue tracker :). If you just want to grab the latest version of GetComponents you can find it at http://github.com/gridaphobe/GetComponents/raw/stable/GetComponents or on my website www.eseidel.org. I also updated the Einstein Toolkit wiki to reflect the move. Note that I the stable version is still the ET_2010_06 release so if you are using the release version you don't have to worry about updating yet. I'll make another announcement if I decide to update the stable branch. Thanks, Eric

New version of Simulation Factory
by Erik Schnetter 13 Sep '10

13 Sep '10

As discussed in today's telecon, Michael Thomas is working on a new version of the Simulation Factory. To check out pysim, you can access it via svn at the following url: <https://svn.cct.lsu.edu/repos/numrel/simfactory/branches/PYSIM_2010> Contained in the source tree that gets checked out is a README_FIRST.txt file that explains some of the main differences between this version of simfactory and the previous perl version. Michael also rewrote the Einstein Toolkit tutorial instructions for this new version, to be found it <http://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Pysim_Tutorial_for_New_Users>. This is an easy way to get started. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Remove default variable guess from Multipole
by Ian Hinder 11 Sep '10

11 Sep '10

Hi, When the Multipole thorn was first written at Penn State for debugging, we were using it with WeylScal4 and to avoid incompatibilities with early parameter files, when the "variables" parameter was added we decided that if it was left blank, it would default to the WeylScal4 Psi4 variable. This is not a good logical default, as the thorn provides generic mode decomposition. I would like to remove this, and the patch is attached. OK to commit? -- Ian Hinder ian.hinder(a)aei.mpg.de

fix WeylScal4::teukolskyID testsuite
by Roland Haas 09 Sep '10

09 Sep '10

Hello all, Ian Hinder found that the testsuite teukolskyID for WeylScal4 was poisoned. It turns out I had forgotten to add MoL to the list of ActiveThorns in the testsuite. Attached please find a patch which rectifies that. Ok to apply (both development and release branch)? Expect some more patches while Tanja and I try and add some extra statements to WeylScal4 to make sure MoL is present (ie. something like inherit from MoL maybe) and adapt to a possible future change in how MoL_PseudoEvolution is scheduled. Ian also pointed out some issues with how (outer hopefully) boundaries are handled which will have to be looked at eventually. Yours, Roland

Fwd: [Developers] SystemStatistics thorn
by Erik Schnetter 02 Sep '10

02 Sep '10

I suggest to add this thorn to our Einstein Toolkit manifest. This will advertise it, and ensure it continues to work on all architectures. -erik ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ian Hinder <ian.hinder(a)aei.mpg.de> Date: Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 4:18 PM Subject: [Developers] SystemStatistics thorn To: List for discussions among Cactus developers <developers(a)cactuscode.org> Hi all, I have a thorn called SystemStatistics which collects various memory-related quantities and puts them in Cactus grid arrays. We have been using it for a while at AEI with no problems. The most useful thing it can tell you is the "resident set size" (i.e. the memory usage) of each process. Cactus can then compute the minimum and maximum across processes and put it in the INFO output and store it on the disk as well. This allows you to see at a glance how much memory is being used just by looking at stdout, taking all processes into account. You also get an idea of the memory imbalance across processes. It also records the swap usage, so you can see at a glance whether a run was using a lot of swap before it died or went slow. Erik has proposed that this might be included in CactusUtils, so I have committed it to AEIThorns and made it public for people to make comments and suggestions. Try it out using: svn co http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/AEIThorns/SystemStatistics/trunk SystemStatistics -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/
