Simulation domain volume and reduction weight sum differ
by Jakob Hansen 25 Sep '12

25 Sep '12

Hi, Using mercurial, I get this warning during simulations : INFO (CarpetReduce): Simulation domain volume: 170368000 INFO (CarpetReduce): Reduction weight sum: 170367999.880642 WARNING level 1 in thorn CarpetReduce processor 0 host tachyon2974 (line 120 of /home01/r632kgw/jakob/CactusP/arrangements/Carpet/CarpetReduce/src/mask_test.c): -> Simulation domain volume and reduction weight sum differ Simulations seem to run okay though. What is causing this warning and is it serious or can I just ignore it? Cheers, Jakob

Problems with mpich2
by jhar131＠cct.lsu.edu 18 Dec '11

When attempting to build a simulation (in fedora), I encounter an undefined reference error pertaining to MPI. I have installed mpich2 and mpich2-devel both automatically with yum -y as suggested in the notation; as well as manually after this error. Any suggestions? Problem with CarpetRegrid2/AMR
by Hal Finkel 15 Dec '11

15 Dec '11

I am trying to setup a simple simulation using CarpetRegrid2's AMR capability. As Erik has already pointed out to me (off list), the adaptive-refinement triggering code is still under development. Nevertheless, I would really like to get it working. In my current test case, I am using Kranc to solve a Klein-Gordon equation (with a non-linear potential). With the provided initial conditions, the system has an expanding bubble. This works well when refinement is turned off. To be clear, the evolution equation is: evolCalc = { Name -> "SFBubble_Evolve", Schedule -> {"in MoL_CalcRHS"}, Where -> Interior, Shorthands -> {}, Equations -> { dot[chi] -> chiM, dot[chiM] -> PD[chi,li,lj] Euc[ui,uj] - Vchi[chi] } }; where Vchi[chi_] := V'[chi] (V is the potential). The AMR level_mask is set by: lvlmskSet = { Name -> "SFBubble_SetLevelMask", Schedule -> {"AT preregrid"}, Where -> Interior, Shorthands -> { adchix, adchiy, adchiz }, Equations -> { adchix -> fabs[dx PD[chi,1]], adchiy -> fabs[dy PD[chi,2]], adchiz -> fabs[dz PD[chi,3]], "level_mask" -> ( Max[ adchix, adchiy, adchiz ]/dchimax ) /. Max[a_, b_, c_] -> fmax[a, fmax[b, c]] } }; (in words: the value of chi should not change by more than dchimax over the length of one grid cell) I am using the Periodic thorn to provide periodic boundary conditions. I've attached six pictures. They are at t = 0, the first level 1 intermediate time step, and the first coarse time step. The first three pictures are the value of chi on a slice through the middle of the box. The second three pictures are the value of level_mask. As can be seen in the second chi image, the interpolation into the refined region seems to be incorrect. The "boundary" seems to have appeared in the middle of the block. I have also attached the block descriptions. Is there something I could be doing incorrectly which would cause this? Otherwise, does anyone have any ideas on where to look for the problem? I am using the trunk version as of this morning. Thank you in advance, Hal -- Hal Finkel Postdoctoral Appointee Leadership Computing Facility Argonne National Laboratory

new CarpetIOASCII/src/util/Carpet2ygraph.pl
by Bruno Giacomazzo 09 Oct '11

09 Oct '11

Hi, I was trying to use the script CarpetIOASCII/src/util/Carpet2ygraph.pl (it is the same both in the git and hg versions of Carpet), but it was not working. I modified it in order to be able again to produce different output for the different refinement levels and now it can also work with more than 9 refinement levels. I have attached my version and the diff with the version in the repository. The only problem is that it still doesn't know how to remove ghost points, so the output files may contain duplicated points. Im my parfile I'm using CarpetIOASCII::out3D_ghosts = "no" and consequently I don't have any problem. But if you have ghostpoints in your .asc files, you may see duplicated points in the output produced by the script. Any suggestion is appreciated. New location for python-simfactory
by Frank Loeffler 04 Oct '11

04 Oct '11

Hi, The location for the python version of simfactory has changed. It used to live as branch PYSIM_2010 within the repository https://svn.cct.lsu.edu/repos/numrel/simfactory/ It now has its own repository https://svn.cct.lsu.edu/repos/numrel/simfactory2/ History is preserved in the sense that this is a copy of the simfactory repository, which the perl version removed and the python branch made the trunk. You cannot "switch --relocate" to this repository. Permissions should be set like for the old repository. Please let me know if you have problems. Only if you are interested in technical details: I tried to use svndumpfilter to get a 'nicer' history, avoiding the repo copy and 'svn mv' of the branches/trunk, by rewriting the paths within the dump. However, because of a combination of 'svn mv/cp' in the past and limitations of every svndumpfilter script available (I found five), this isn't possible without major pain and a lot of work, if at all. spring meeting
by Frank Loeffler 29 Sep '11

29 Sep '11

Hi, We decided to have a spring ET workshop, targeted at a larger audience, and either directly before or after the APS meeting in Atlanta. We should decide soon about whether we target the before or after, to coordinate with other meetings. Please just shortly state whether you prefer either of the two, or whether you don't care. thanks, Frank

compiler warning for McLachlan
by Frank Loeffler 27 Sep '11

27 Sep '11

Hi, I just checked out a new copy of the Einstein Toolkit and compiled, and got this (and a lot of similar messages): An internal threshold was exceeded for routine _Z20ML_BSSN_O2_RHS2_BodyPK4_cGHiiPKdS3_S3_PKiS5_iPrKPd and optimization level may be reduced. See http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/internal-threshold-was-exceeded for more information and advice. In addition, McLachlan seems to compile for a very long time and uses a lot of memory (several GB per compiler process), for the Intel compiler. Did I miss this in the past or did something change in McLachlan which could trigger this? Frank

Einstein Toolkit installaton problems
by ciambridge 26 Sep '11

Hello, my name is Vassili, i just started my PhD under the supervision of Toni font in Valencia. I am going to work with the Einstein Toolkit to do numerical simulations. I tried installing the toolkit as described in the simplified tutorial for new users and got the following error messages when trying to compile: Error: Unclassifiable statement at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:971.72: GOTO 404 1 Error: Label 404 referenced at (1) is never defined /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1393.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Bad continuation line at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1393.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Unclassifiable statement at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1392.29: write(filehandle,101) char(34),filename 1 Error: FORMAT label 101 at (1) not defined /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1694.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Bad continuation line at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1694.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Unclassifiable statement at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1693.22: write(444,101) char(34),filename 1 Error: FORMAT label 101 at (1) not defined /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1998.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Bad continuation line at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1998.6: 101 format(a1,a14) 1 Error: Unclassifiable statement at (1) /home/vass/Cactus/configs/firsttry/build/Extract/Extract.f:1997.22: write(444,101) char(34),filename 1 Error: FORMAT label 101 at (1) not defined make[3]: *** [Extract.F.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
