Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 9:30 am US central time on Mondays. Tomorrow, we will use a hangout again, with the URL being posted, as usual on this list, about 15 minutes before the meeting, and they will be also posted on https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Main_Page Central to the discussion tomorrow will be how to solve current problems with the release. GW150914 example, noisy Psi4 waveforms
by Christian D. Ott 18 Jun '17

18 Jun '17

Hi All, I have been experimenting with the GW150914 par file (Thanks for putting it together!), which uses Llama multipatch (MP) with McLachlan (ML) and, of course, Carpet AMR in the interior Cartesian patch, tracking the punctures. I'm noticing three things when looking at Psi4 l2,m2 waveforms (and this is largely independent of extraction radius): (1) The waveforms have high-frequency wiggles that similar pure-AMR simulations do not show. I don't have a pure AMR simulation for GW150914, but am comparing with an 8-orbit, equal mass, non-spinnning case. I can run GW150914 with pure AMR if need be. (2) The high-frequency wiggles get *worse* if I decrease the finite differencing order from 8th to 4th order. (3) This appears to be a wave amplitude-dependent 'feature', since the wiggles are much less pronounced once the waves reach higher amplitudes. I'm attaching two gnuplot screenshots: fig1.png shows the first ~800 M of Psi4 l2,m2 real at r=136 M with the stock par file and with a modified par file for 4th order. fig2.png is a zoom-in. I'm also attaching the par file that I'm using for the 4th-order run. Now my questions: Does anybody have an idea where the high-f noise is coming from and why it's getting worth for lower FD order? Any suggestions on how to mitigate it? Thanks! - Christian

sites down
by Roland Haas 17 Jun '17

17 Jun '17

Hello all, I seem to be unable to access the trac site: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ or the ET website http://www.einsteintoolkit.org/ The announced downtime (email from Frank) was two days ago. This happens from both my workstation as well as from the Blue Waters login node. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. downtime Cactus and Einsteintoolkit services at LSU
by Frank Loeffler 13 Jun '17

13 Jun '17

Hi, The services hosted at LSU (svn, web, trac) will be moved to more modern hardware, on Tuesday June 13th, planned from 4pm to 6pm central US time, and thus, will not be available in that time frame. Frank Loeffler

Loop on timelevels in POSTREGRID
by Federico Guercilena 13 Jun '17

13 Jun '17

Hello, I have a viscosity grid function I want to evaluate (among other places) at CCTK_POSTREGRID, so that it's consistent and ready for use at CCTK_EVOL. Problem is, the viscosity depends on the past timelevels of another grid function (the entropy). It seems Carpet loops on the timelevels in CCTK_POSTREGRID, which means that when the loop is on the "current" timelevel everything works fine, but when the loop moves onto some past timelevel, the other timelevels, the ones further in the past so to speak, are undefined. In particular the code segfaults when trying to access something like entropy_p_p[ijk], since entropy_p_p does not point to a valid memory address. I was able to fix this simply by checking if the pointers to past timelevels are valid, and breaking out of the function otherwise. This does the trick, but I was wondering if there's a more elegant, Cactus/Carpet native solution. My fix could maybe also slightly impact performance. Is there a way to disable the loop on timelevels in CCTK_POSTREGRID (but only for a given scheduled routine)? Or to schedule something after POSTREGRID, but before timelevels are rotated? As far as I know neither is possible, but hopefully I'm disregarding something. Thanks, Federico Guercilena

Present: Bill Gabella, Frank, Roland, Erik, Qian, Vassili, Bhavesh, Roberto, Peter * Roland gave a quick overview over the school status ** program for school settled ** want lecturers to commit to abstract and topics for lecture soon * Bill Gabella introduced himself. Group effort to get ET working at Vanderbilt and what one can do with it. ** if there are nice figures or simulations, would be interested in including them ET release * will create release branches in 1.5 weeks time * release in two weeks (end of June) * need list of tasks * new diagnostics thorn, likely too late but have a look: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1974 * update version of LORENE: would like to include https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1817 * Meudon (just a patch): https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2039 * Carpet using this==NULL: Erik has an independent fix, one of the fixes should go in. https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1821 * McLachlan testsuite fail: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1995 must be fixed for the release * new thorn RNS thorn: likely won't make it into the release https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2043 * new analysis thorns: likely won't make it into the release https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2042 * EOS_Omni piecewise polytropes, could go in if we get the final "please apply". https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2040 KNL issues: * still working on issues stampede, got into contact with TACC but got sidetracked * need volunteers to work on optimization. No deep knowledge of ET required. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://pgp.mit.edu .

No Einstein Toolkit telecon today
by Erik Schnetter 05 Jun '17

Dear Einstein Toolkit community By coincidence, a number of the regular telecon participants cannot attend today. We are therefore cancelling today's call, and will resume next week as usual. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Bug fix in PITTNullCode
by Yosef Zlochower 02 Jun '17

02 Jun '17

Hi, Bela Szilagyi, Kevin Barkett, and Mark Scheel found a bug in the evolution equation for the metric variable J in the PITT Null Code. I pushed their fix to the master branch of the pittnullcode repository. The erroneous term may have contributed only a small amount to the News because it's a third-order term. -- Dr. Yosef Zlochower Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation Associate Professor School of Mathematical Sciences Rochester Institute of Technology 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, NY 14623 Office:74-2067 Phone: +1 585-475-6103 yosef(a)astro.rit.edu CONFIDENTIALITY NOTE: The information transmitted, including attachments, is intended only for the person(s) or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material.
