Dear all,
in response to the invitation to submit a white paper on "Numerical
relativity for next-generation gravitational-wave probes of fundamental
physics" to the Snowmass2021 - Cosmic Frontier 7 Topical Group, we
prepared this white paper:
https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.08139
Snowmass is similar in spirit to the US Astro2020 Decadal Survey, but is
pitching to the high-energy physics community to solicit support from
NSF Physics and the Department of Energy (DOE) for future gravitational
wave detectors and science.
We have to submit a final version until the end of March. Therefore, we
would like to solicit your endorsement, and include your feedback or
comments until 25 March 2022. Please add your information to this
overleaf document
https://www.overleaf.com/2627726733zdppgkvqwxjp
The document is structured as follows
- endorsers: if you would like to endorse the white paper, please
sign-up in the overlead and list your name, institution, email address
- NR code: if you would like us to include your numerical relativity
code in Table 1 of the white paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.08139),
please list the code's name with 1-2 references, indicate if it is open
source, if you used it to create a waveform catalog, the formulation
used, if it is has modules for (general-relativistic) hydro-dynamics and
if it is has modules for alternative gravity theories.
- Comments per section
- If you would like us to include additional references, please provide
the *inspires* bibtex code whenever possible.
Best wishes
Helvi, Francois, Pablo, Geoffrey, David

Hi,
I’m trying to create a multipatch visualization using VisIt’s GUI (version
3.1.4, on MacOS). I am following the tutorial
https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/GW150914_VisIt_Tutorial
which allows me to correctly visualize the Cartesian portion of the grid as
in the provided example.
However, I am unable to visualize the spherical part of the grid, which, if
I understand correctly, should be in the data since the grid settings in
the parfile include
Carpet::domain_from_multipatch = yes
CartGrid3D::type = "multipatch"
CartGrid3D::set_coordinate_ranges_on = "all maps"
Coordinates::coordinate_system = "Thornburg04"
For concreteness, let’s say we are working with the data from the file
`phi.0.xy.h5`. Taking some hints from the thread
http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2019-January/006716.html
it seems that the coordinate files `x.0.xy.h5`, `y.0.xy.h5`, `z.0.xy.h5`
are required to visualize the spherical part of the grid, so I open all of
these files before doing, say, Add > Pseudocolor > ML_BSSN_phi.
This produces the Cartesian portion of the grid. I’ve tried looking for the
option "Carpet Multipatch” but it doesn’t seem to be available.
Any recommendations?
Thank you!
Tomas

* schedule has been created, on wiki
* according to schedule all proposed codes should be in master
* for FLRWsolver: try and see if current method to compile would work

AOB:
* Atul asked about tutorial or video on how to understand parfiles
** Roland mentioned that Erik may have discussed this at the ICERM
meeting at Brown a couple of years ago
** link to video is on ET wiki, direct link here:
https://icerm.brown.edu/video_archive/?play=2356 around 2 hours in is
the parfile discussion
* Leo asked about how to finely control what SYNC does, specifically
looking for a way to exchange ghost zones but does not transfer
information
** no function to do just ghost zone exchange
** could use EnableProlongation / DisableProlongation (in
Carpet/interface.ccl)
* Leo noticed that volume computation in VolumeIntegral has to multiply
** asked about way to directly sum up grid function values without
adjusting by volume
** Roland suggested to give "isum" reduction a try
