Present: Eric, Helvi, Peter, Roland, Sam, Steve, Zach Neutron star star: * Zach provided details on HARM3D evolution, currently no NR yet, but development on multiple fronts * provided update on Vassili's SpherecalBSNN and SphericalGRMHD codes that will be made public sometime after September * Steve mentioned LSU code (Octotiger) that seems to do better at preserving angular momentum than plain Cartesian codes Alternative drivers for the ET: * had a discussion about alternative drivers * would want interaction with developers * Steve mentioned octotiger, developed at LSU, using HPX, currently ran on full scale on Pizdaint * Zach mentioned the DendroGR code, as something to consider as well (David Nelisen's code at RIT). Still in development, will have subcycling in time by end of summer. * Roland mentioned AMReX, which is a block structured AMR code similar to CarpetLib so "easy" to adapt. Has funding from DOE as part of ExaScale computing project * would have to be made of part of a larger story Peter's self-force code: * almost completely done with rewrite, started to write code paper * code to be public at some point after that, timeline is weeks and months, but have to specific deadline * will need to go through review, volunteers needed Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. boundary conditions with Llama
by Miguel Zilhão 26 Jun '19

26 Jun '19

hi all, i've been implementing a scalar wave evolution code to work with the Llama multipatch infrastructure. i think i have it working except for the boundary conditions. as a first test, i tried to call the NewRad infrastructure, in the same way that i usually do for my non-multipatch codes: ierr = NewRad_Apply(cctkGH, phi, rhs_phi, phi_0, one, n_phi) ierr = NewRad_Apply(cctkGH, Kphi, rhs_Kphi, Kphi_0, one, n_Kphi) but this does not seem to work as i get instabilities very early on... am i missing something, or is NewRad not designed to work with Llama? if so, what is the "standard" way of imposing BCs for multipatch evolutions? thanks, Miguel

Achieve Cell-Center in NR simulation
by Steve Hawk 24 Jun '19

24 Jun '19

Hello: Thanks for giving some hints about adaptive mesh refinement with the help of Roland, but I feel sorry that I came across some new problems about cell-centering when I try to simulate "the transition from wormholes to trumpets” considering Schwartzchild metric. Since the singularity (0,0,0) exists under the metric of Schwartzchild, I want to make use of cell-centered method to avoid the singularity. Although there is an option CartGrid3D::avoid_origin = “yes” in the thorn CartGrid3D, it seems that it doesn’t works properly: the data related to the grid points (0,0,0) is still been calculated (very large!). The related par file is attached in the attachment. So I am wondering is there a method to solve the problem or any parameters of thorns governing the cell-centering methods? Thanks! Best Regards! Failed to Download Proca
by Arshad Momen 24 Jun '19

24 Jun '19

Hi, Following the instructions provided in the page https://einsteintoolkit.org/download.html for downloading Proca. However, after issuing the command ./GetComponents --parallel https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/manifest/raw/ET_2019_03/einsteintoolk… I received the response "You have requested a subversion checkout, but the system was unable to find subversion. Please enter the path to subversion: " Not sure how to respond. Can you please redirect me about what to do here? ( the previous two commands given in the page worked fine). Thanks , Arshad Momen [image: Mailtrack] <https://mailtrack.io?utm_source=gmail&utm_medium=signature&utm_campaign=sig…> Sender notified by Mailtrack <https://mailtrack.io?utm_source=gmail&utm_medium=signature&utm_campaign=sig…> 06/21/19, 07:41:37 PM

ToV Collapse Example Parfile
by COLE KELSON-PACKER 19 Jun '19

19 Jun '19

Hello, I am a new user of the einstein toolkit, and I've been going through running some of the example par files provided by default. I've been trying to test the tov collapse par file tov_collapse_vc_13.par. Looking around online, I've found that it runs using a thorn called CoreCollapseControl not included in the current build. I've found slightly modified versions in the archives of this mailing list that run using the thorn Trigger, but these don't seem to work either. I am aware that this simulation eventually returns GRHydro errors, but the par file isn't even fully compiling for me. Everything seems to build smoothly until the following error: "Warning[L1,P0] (Cactus): Major error in parameter file 'output-0000/tov_collapse_vc_13.par line 74: Parameter 'loopcontrol::use_random_restart_hill_climbing' not found" this is followed by warnings coming from scheduling and routine, then the simulation aborts. This suggests to me that something has changed in the loopcontrol thorn since, but I don't know. The parfile I'm trying to use come from the conversation in lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2012-October/002592.html I would be grateful if anyone could shed light on what's going on here. Thank you! -- Cole Kelson-Packer Department of Physics, University of Utah

How to add thorn CarpetAdaptiveRegrid to simulate
by Steve Hawk 16 Jun '19

16 Jun '19

Hello: I am trying to do a simulation about wormholes-trumpet using ETK. Using AMR techniques seems necessary to save lots of computing memory at the moment. I download all the thorns following the instructions from the ETK websites, then add the statement: ActiveThorns = “CarpetAdaptiveRegrid" and other necessary thorns in the par files, to prepare for a simulation. But when I compile it, it tells me CarpetAdaptiveRegrid can not be found! Then I check the catalog of Cactus, I find CarpetAdaptiveRegrid is just in the repos/carpet, not belongs to arrangments/Carpet. So I want to ask is there any methods to add CarpetAdaptiveRegrid to successfully compile with it? (I try to modify the original einsteintoolkit.th<http://einsteintoolkit.th> file to add CarpetAdaptiveRegrid into it, but it tells me the conflicts between CarpetRegrid2 and CarpetAdaptiveRegrid!) Or how to compile ETK with adding into CarpetAdaptiveRegrid into it to achieve AMR? Thanks! Best Regards! Xiaoxiao

Norm2 calculation on different grid levels
by Elena De Paoli 15 Jun '19

15 Jun '19

Hello, I'm doing a simulation for BBH and I want to calculate the norm2 of the Hamiltonian constraints on different grid levels. Ideally i would like to calculate it first removing the first level of the grid, then removing it and the second one and so on...(the purpose is that i want to exclude the boundary contribution to the calculation). Do you know if there is a tool in the ET to do it? Thanks Elena De Paoli

Present: Helvi, Roland, Peter, Yosef ET tutorial server * cannot currently create account requests via web-form: fixed as of beginning of week, was broken March till June * compiling produces many server down / server up emails: still happens due to latency of frontend responding to http requests, could either ask to move VM to different node or to split system into "login" VM and "worker" VMs for users * Roland to ask admins to move to a different hardware node Provide compiled version of the ET * https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2260/provide-compiled-… * useful for people that are less experienced in numerical work, which may also be the same group of people that are likely to have problems setting up docker * Helvi may have time to try this out on her Ubuntu system, serving as a test-case since she has never used docker before Memory issues: * https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2194/memory-increase-d… * initial idea was that this could be communication buffers that were never shrunk * patch that frees this memory was provided but does not seem to help in all cases * two more cases that fail, small one by Miguel, large one by Gabriele * memory usage in failing case by Miguel is very uneven, possibly due to communication buffers ET US workshop at RIT * broadcast will likely be done via bluejeans * working on having camera and mike for remote participants to see the screen and the audience * also for lunch discussion * link will be send to mailing list and be available on workshop page https://ccrg.rit.edu/content/events/2019-06-17/north-american-einstein-tool… * have discussion about changed citation policy for ET during lunch discussion Gallery examples will be updated * TOV: small version for online/jupyter tutorial needs to be uploaded * BBH: in progress, waiting in queue on local cluster * BNS: in progress, Peter travelling next week Peter's self-force code: * no updates, will discuss at Capra meeting next week unanswered question on mailing list / open tickets sorted by update time * none at this point There will be no ET call next week (just after the ET meeting), next call June 27th. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://pgp.mit.edu .
