Present: Peter, Steve, Roland, Erik, Josh, Matt, Philipp * Erik, Ian and Barry are working on simfactory 3 which modularizes simfactory and includes facilities to build ExternalLibraries outside of Cactus ** downloads source code of external libraries only when required ** contact Ian Hinder for access to source code ** Steve asked if the modules in simfactory would be useful as a basis to replace the main Cactus make file with a script ** Erik said that so far simfactory 3 treats Cactus as a black box * Caltech would like to extend our EOS interface to handle more complex EOS that take an extra independent variable (describing the nuclear composition). ** it is suggested to leave the current EOS calls in place and to add a new set eg including Abar in the new function names ** possibly forward the "old" calls to the new ones, passing NULL for the extra argument ** Fortran callability may be sacrificed in the initial implementation * currently bluewaters shows a significant regression in run speed that even occurs when using an old executable. The seems possibly related to an update of the MPI stack. Philipp is working with Bluewaters support to fix this. Bluewaters is aware of the problem and Cactus is not the only code affected. Building on Mac OS
by Ian Hinder 10 Feb '14

10 Feb '14

Hi, I tried to compile the ET on my Mac OS 10.8.5 laptop this morning, and it failed while trying to compile MPI. I'm not sure why it wants to compile MPI, since I have openmpi installed via MacPorts. The error was > vt_pform_macos.c: In function 'vt_pform_wtime': > vt_pform_macos.c:210:7: error: 'asm' undeclared (first use in this function) > vt_pform_macos.c:210:7: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in > vt_pform_macos.c:210:11: error: expected ';' before 'volatile' > make[7]: *** [libvt_la-vt_pform_macos.lo] Error 1 > make[7]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... > make[6]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > make[5]: *** [all] Error 2 > make[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > ERROR: Error while building MPI. Aborting. > > CST error 1: > -> Configuration script for thorn MPI returned exit code 1 > Error message: 'Error while building MPI. Aborting.' This may have been a problem all along, but in the past, the MPI thorn was able to detect my installation of MPI. But now, it says: > ******************************************************************************** > Running configuration script for thorn MPI: > MPI selected, but MPI_DIR not set. Checking some places... > MPI: Preparing directory structure... > MPI: Unpacking archive... > ~/Cactus/EinsteinToolkit/configs/sim/scratch/build/MPI ~/Cactus/EinsteinToolkit/configs/sim/scratch > MPI not found > Using bundled MPI... > Building MPI > [ian@Ians-MacBook-Pro EinsteinToolkit (proposed)]$ port list installed|grep mpi > mpi_select @0.0 sysutils/mpi_select > openmpi @1.7.3 science/openmpi > openmpi-default @1.7.3 science/openmpi Has anybody run into this before? If not, then I can attempt to dig into the configure script and find out why it's not detecting openmpi from macports anymore. -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

My system is a dual pentium 4 at 3Ghz running mint 16. In order to point to a specific item, what is the current simfactory in terms of 1. stable 2. devel trees when running say the Gowdy.par simulation. I hope that pointing to a specific par file may help others in this line of inquiry dave

@ENV(FOO)@ in simfactory
by Roland Haas 07 Feb '14

07 Feb '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello all, I have the vague feeling that I have asked that before, but cannot find an actual discussion on this: should the @ENV(FOO)@ functionality in simfactory currently be usable? There is some code (in the ParseEnvCommands function) that would seem to handle it but from doing a grep on that function name, it does not actually seem to ever be called from within the simfactory main code. I tried the attached (incorrect if Cactus was to actually parse it but we don't get that far) par file. Which tries various methods to get simfactory to expand @ENV(USER)@ into rhaas (in my case...) before handing the parfile to Cactus. However this does not happen and the strings all stay unexpanded. Does anyone remember if @ENV(FOO)@ should work right now? I do realize that I could either use Cactus' build in $ENV{FOO} to get the parfile parser to resolve the variable, but that requires that I pass the variable to the compute node and the PBS scripts in simfactory don't do that (I don't really want $USER but $LORENE_DATA_DIR). I could also use an rpar file (ie a python/perl script) and do the string manipulations in there, but if possible I'd limit the number of layers of modifications done to the script and stick to "stock options" since this is for an example parfile. make utils ignoring config file?
by Vassilios Mewes 07 Feb '14

07 Feb '14

Hello when building with simfactory, configname-utils are built by default..on the cluster i have been building with simfactory, which uses intel mpi, i need to use the -mt_mpi flags in order to successfully build with openmp.. building the configuration works fine with that, however, when building the utils (using simfactory or manually with $make configname-utils i get the following errors: ld: MPIR_Thread: TLS definition in /afs/(a)cell/common/soft/intel/ics2013/impi/4.1.3/lib64/libmpi_mt.so section .tbss mismatches non-TLS definition in /afs/(a)cell/common/soft/intel/ics2013/impi/4.1.3/lib64/libmpi.so section .bss /afs/(a)cell/common/soft/intel/ics2013/impi/4.1.3/lib64/libmpi.so: could not read symbols: Bad value make[1]: *** [/ran/u/mvass/cactus/Cactus/exe/ET_INTEL_SIM/carpet2xgraph] Error 1 make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... and the same for all utilities trying to be built those were precisely the errors i got around by usingt he -mt_mpi flags and using -lmpi_mt library in my config file... it however seems that this is ignored for the build of the utils... I have actually never used them before, but it seems strange that they canot be built while the Toolkit exe compiles just fine.. best wishes, Vassili

extreaneous (?) 0 in bluewaters-gnu.cfg

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello all, the first line in bluewaters-gnu.cfg currently (rev 2266) read: 0# Whenever this version string changes, the application is configured ie starts with a "0". Is this intional (ie similar to having to end a perl module file with "1;" for some reason) ? Yours, Roland - -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Present: Frank, Roland, Matt, Erik, Peter using intel 14 compiler: * Frank tried and failed with a compiler abort inside of CTGamma * Erik tried on a machine with both gcc 4.8 and gcc 4.7 installed which causes the compilation to fail due to improperly chosen include files (see: http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/489013) enabled-thorns option: * triggered by ticket #1532 * the current method is not yet optimal * several options discussed: 1. disable thorns from inside Cactus when they detect hey cannot run, this needs to be done very early in the build process 2. use two thornlists, one generated automatically from the other. Simfactory or GetComponents may do this. 3. thorns detect at configure time that they cannot compile and turn themselves into No-OP thorns. This shifts errors to run time. 4. duplicate thorn entries in thornlist, one copy in the CHECKOUT line to have GetComponents check it out and a second (commented out) copy in the bulk so that simfactory can activate it if desired misc: * Peter will host the call next week Yours, Roland
