ld using lots of memory on Fedora Core 20
by Roland Haas 30 Apr '14

30 Apr '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello all, I am trying to test building the ET on Fedora core and find that the linking stage uses much more (1.3GB, the executable is 280M) memory than on the other Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian) that I tried. I already tried the -no-keep-memory option which does not help. Does anyone have experience with how to make the linker use less memory? I follow the steps in https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Simplified_Tutorial_for_New_Users (which is what I am updating), with the exception of updating the mpich paths to no longer use mpich2 but instead mpich. Re: [Users] [svn:cactuscode] Boundary/trunk/src/ (Rev. 327)
by Erik Schnetter 29 Apr '14

Roland It seems that these lines pertain to dimensions that are larger than the dimension of the respective grid variable. That is, this would e.g. set the extent of the z (sic!) boundary to 1 for 2d variables that don't have a z direction. Is this intended? -erik On Apr 29, 2014, at 2:57 , rhaas(a)tapir.caltech.edu wrote: > User: rhaas > Date: 2014/04/28 07:57 PM > > Modified: > /trunk/src/ > CopyBoundary.c, FlatBoundary.c, ScalarBoundary.c, StaticBoundary.c > > Log: > correct 1d, 2d boundary handling > > since rev 309 1d and 2d evolutions would not apply the boundary condition > > File Changes: > > Directory: /trunk/src/ > ====================== > > File [modified]: CopyBoundary.c > Delta lines: +2 -2 > =================================================================== > --- trunk/src/CopyBoundary.c 2014-03-23 02:13:34 UTC (rev 326) > +++ trunk/src/CopyBoundary.c 2014-04-29 00:57:01 UTC (rev 327) > @@ -1149,8 +1149,8 @@ > so that we can use the INDEX_3D macro later on */ > for (i = gdim; i < MAXDIM; i++) > { > - ash[i] = 0; > - lsh[i] = 0; > + ash[i] = 1; > + lsh[i] = 1; > } > > /* get the current timelevel */ > > File [modified]: FlatBoundary.c > Delta lines: +2 -2 > =================================================================== > --- trunk/src/FlatBoundary.c 2014-03-23 02:13:34 UTC (rev 326) > +++ trunk/src/FlatBoundary.c 2014-04-29 00:57:01 UTC (rev 327) > @@ -975,8 +975,8 @@ > so that we can use the INDEX_3D macro later on */ > for (i = gdim; i < MAXDIM; i++) > { > - ash[i] = 0; > - lsh[i] = 0; > + ash[i] = 1; > + lsh[i] = 1; > } > > /* get the current timelevel */ > > File [modified]: ScalarBoundary.c > Delta lines: +2 -2 > =================================================================== > --- trunk/src/ScalarBoundary.c 2014-03-23 02:13:34 UTC (rev 326) > +++ trunk/src/ScalarBoundary.c 2014-04-29 00:57:01 UTC (rev 327) > @@ -1114,8 +1114,8 @@ > so that we can use the INDEX_3D macro later on */ > for (i = gdim; i < MAXDIM; i++) > { > - ash[i] = 0; > - lsh[i] = 0; > + ash[i] = 1; > + lsh[i] = 1; > } > > /* get the current timelevel */ > > File [modified]: StaticBoundary.c > Delta lines: +2 -2 > =================================================================== > --- trunk/src/StaticBoundary.c 2014-03-23 02:13:34 UTC (rev 326) > +++ trunk/src/StaticBoundary.c 2014-04-29 00:57:01 UTC (rev 327) > @@ -994,8 +994,8 @@ > so that we can use the INDEX_3D macro later on */ > for (i = gdim; i < MAXDIM; i++) > { > - ash[i] = 0; > - lsh[i] = 0; > + ash[i] = 1; > + lsh[i] = 1; > } > > /* get the current timelevel */ > > _______________________________________________ > Commits mailing list > Commits(a)cactuscode.org > http://cactuscode.org/mailman/listinfo/commits -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/ My email is as private as my paper mail. Present: Roland, Ian, Peter, Steve, Erik upcoming release: * will introduce freeze today if Frank agrees * mention release preparer rather than full set of maintainers in release email * focus on machines with most errors, ignore stampede-mac, pandora * Peter looked the 3 tl initialization code in Carpet. Unsure if this code is currently correct since it differs significantly from older versions and at first glance seems to not do the right thing dedicated (virtual) machine machine to run tests etc: * currently the Jenkins build slaves are very different (since they run as virtual machines on whatever resources are available to the donors). * try and obtain funding to have dedicated hardware to run these virtual machines (or dedicated virtual machines) hosted more permanently than someone's personal workstation * Steve suggested that possibly some of the Chemora funding could contribute if the Chemora tests were also run on that machine Ongoing issues: Gallery: * small examples of non-trivial code * BBH (qc0): Ian * BH: Peter: working version on Peter's laptop * NSNS to BH: currently fails * TOV collapse: Roland was volunteered, but suspects this will fail Yours, Roland

Test results available
by Erik Schnetter 26 Apr '14

26 Apr '14

I just updated the Einstein Toolkit test results on <http://einsteintoolkit.org/release-info/parse_testsuite_results.php> for many systems. For the systems that do not yet have current results, please either update them, or remove them from the list if the systems are outdated, or give me access so that I can run the tests there as well. There seem to be two main problems that need addressing: (1) On Hopper (and Gordon and Trestles), many tests running on 2 MPI processes fail. This is likely an MPI problem, or a configuration problem related to how we use MPI. (2) On Blue Waters, a more tests (8) than on most other systems are failing. We should investigate. This is a community effort. If you are a maintainer of the Einstein Toolkit, you are expected to contribute to the release process. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/ My email is as private as my paper mail. Talks in svn repo???
by Erik Schnetter 23 Apr '14

23 Apr '14

I like having a checkout of the svn repo for the ET web site on my laptop; this allows me to keep everything in sync when I make changes. I just discovered that there are now recorded talks in this repository. This is a non-starter for me; downloading the talks via a slow wireless connection won't work for me. Please keep large files that are unlikely to change in a different repo from small files that are frequently edited. (One may even question the necessity of use version control for a recorded talk, but I'm not doing that here, as those dealing with these large files can choose themselves whether the 2x or 3x overhead caused by this is inconvenient for them.) -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/ My email is as private as my paper mail. IllinoisGRMHD Status
by Zach Etienne 21 Apr '14

21 Apr '14

Hi all, I had to call in through Google Voice today, as I have just arrived in Barcelona for the Sant Cugat Forum on Astrophysics. My connection was not great, so I report on my progress here. I fixed a number of compiler warnings in IllinoisGRMHD over the past week, to minimize the chances of any compiling issues. The only remaining warnings are completely harmless (e.g., variable FOO may be used uninitialized). I have verified that IllinoisGRMHD compiles without errors using GCC (4.7.3), Intel (13.1.3 20130617), and BlueWaters' default PGI compiler. In addition, I ran Valgrind tests with poisoning disabled, and zero memory issues were found in my IllinoisGRMHD test case (evolving random initial data). I also backtraced and fixed a discrepancy between the ET IllinoisGRMHD code and our old, trusted GRMHD code version. I am working with Roland to verify that the staggered prolongation/restriction operators work as expected on AMR grids with 2+ levels of refinement on the coarse grid. He is concerned of potential issues with restriction communicating data across two or more levels. Thus far, my tests have focused only on 2-level AMR grids (i.e., one level of refinement on the coarsest grid). The new tests consist of Nth order prolongation and restriction of Nth order polynomial data on staggered grids, testing all four staggerings. I anticipate completing those tests before the next telecon. At the moment, I am confident that there will be no issues in compiling the code on other machines, so would it be okay if we proceeded now to adding IllinoisGRMHD as an experimental thorn, as planned? That is to say, make IllinoisGRMHD part of the default ET download for this upcoming release, but commented out of the default ThornList, with a comment along the lines of: "# IllinoisGRMHD is marked EXPERIMENTAL for the $RELEASENAME version of ET, and it is planned to be incorporated into the next ET release." Please let me know if there are any objections. -Zach * * * Zachariah Etienne Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, West Virginia University and Joint Space-Science Institute Prize Postdoctoral Fellow Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Physics Department, University of Maryland, College Park On Sun, Apr 20, 2014 at 3:53 PM, Frank Loeffler <knarf(a)cct.lsu.edu> wrote: > Hi > > Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at > 10 am US central time on Mondays.
