two-punctures documentation
by Comer Duncan 28 Aug '12

28 Aug '12

Hi, I can not seem to find a non-vacuous version of the Einstein Toolkit documentation for TwoPunctures. On my local machine, I can generate a latex file TwoPunctures.tex but looking it over shows that the various sections fo the documentation have not been fleshed. Am I seeing something because my build (or attempted build) of the ThornGuilde.pdf has failed? I can not get the make of ThornGuide.pdf to complete on my machine (mac osx Mountain Lion with latex fully flavored since I upgraded to Mountain Lion). Can you guys please point me to somewhere which has the fully built documentation.pdf? I am using Lovelace since July. Thanks much. Comer

Present were: Erik, Peter, Roland, Frank, Steve, Ian, Christian Ott, ELoisa, Yosef, Bruno, Tanja ET fall workshop: * dates are now fixes to week of Oct 22nd, from Mo (22nd) at noon to Fri (26th) at noon * hotel information available on the wiki page https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2012 * physics topics: - MHD related: vector potential, resistive MHD, force-free MHD (on its own, coupled to ideal mhd, as limiting case in Con2Prim, ...) - radiative transport: possible enhance Caltech leakage code for general geometries (for NSNS mergers), however: was explicitly taken out of proposal due to funding cut - ID solver for complex EOS: Frank will contact Nick Stergioulas about making (a version of) RNSID public, with the ET adding complex EOS support using EOS_Omni (note: there apparently already is support for complex EOS using a private interface) - cosmology: Eloisa and Erik interested, Eloisa willing to give a 1hr presentation to get things started - MP: -- needs final ok from developers, details of publication need to be discussed -- Is well tested in vacuum and supported by Kranc. Hydro support is being used for publication work and should also work, but is less well tested -- MHD part is essentially untested and not complete (but simple to add). -- Erik agreed to give a presentation to teach how to use it and to point out the secrets to make things work (or fail). -- unlikely to be included in next release but possibly shortly after, to be discussed at workshop * collect registration fee to pay for catering (Yosef will ask Josh), should not be more than USD ~50 MHD: * paper is due since the grant will run out soon * will mention characteristic speed issue in paper * Bondi infall has problems with interpolation from 1d to 3d * will coordinate via email and have authors commit to tasks for this week Misc: * will have a call on labour day Yours, Roland

Einstein Toolkit Meeting
by Frank Loeffler 26 Aug '12

26 Aug '12

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ I short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. We will discuss topics for the fall ET developer workshop [1], which will take place from Oct 22nd to Oct 26th at RIT. In particular, more physics related topics are called for (rather than CS-oriented, as we have enough on the table there already). Activity last week includes 11 active and still open bugs and three closed issues: - For the issue of compiled documentation it was decided to keep it for the sake of easy availability to users. - Reductions within SphericalSurface are now not attempted unless auto_res[n] is set. - Error message improvements in Carpet 10 Tickets are waiting for review at the moment [2]. Please see if you can help. Frank Loeffler [1] https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2012 [2] https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=review&group=component&col=id…

Present were: Erik, Peter, Roland, Josh, Tanja, Ian, Eloisa, Bruno, Yosef ET fall workshop: * time: right now still Oct 22nd, however Christian Ott raised the issue that there is a grant proposal deadline near this date. Yosef says that the NSF grant deadline is Oct 31st which might not actually interfere. Will need to discuss on the mailing list. * refinemend of topics are that listed on wiki page: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2012 - Cosmology: Eloisa will flesh out - want/need physics project, not just computer science. Please think about this. - ELoisa asked for clarification why the elliptic solver topic was removed: removed because we are at the same stage we were at the last workshop and since it does not seem as if this is a project that requires a workshop environment but would rather benefit from a smaller group taking care of it - all: please flesh out the proposed topics - more test cases that test current physics * have virtual/in-person presentation/input from other groups working on similar topics Misc: * will keep pdf documentation in repository, no objections * want searchable online docs. Ian suggests that something like a google search box might be best, alos generated single html page version that can be searched * online docs currently not auto-generated due to lack of automated commit rights into the repository storing them Yours, Roland

McLachlan boundary conditions
by Ian Hinder 22 Aug '12

22 Aug '12

Hi, Three months ago, I corrected a bug in the McLachlan boundary conditions. See https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/848 for more details. All bug fixes tend to be discussed on trac.einsteintoolkit.org, but we should probably announce bugs like this which people might miss otherwise on the mailing list as well. Someone has just found that an unexplained numerical blowup was fixed by applying the above patch. The bug affects the Maxwell release, but is fixed in Lovelace. Anyone still using Maxwell and McLachlan radiative boundary conditions with conformalMethod = 1 should probably apply that fix or update to Lovelace. Similarly, ML_ADMConstraints is incorrect in Maxwell, and fixed in Lovelace. -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

C++ interface of HDF5
by Frank Loeffler 21 Aug '12

21 Aug '12

Hi, Currently, the HDF5 thorn within ExternalLibraries provides the C++ interface of the hdf5 library by default. However, nothing within the toolkit makes use of it. The C++ interface is considered deprecated by hdf5 itself. It doesn't work together with parallel hdf5. Thus, I suggest to not build and look for the C++ interface by default. The benefit would be that typical system installations (which don't come with the c++ interface) can be used without explicitly specifying flags in the optionlist. Also, parallel hdf5 could be used more easily. A disadvantage would be of course that it would not be available by default anymore. However, nothing within the Einstein Toolkit actually uses it. On argument so far had been that the Carpet hdf5 visit reader uses it. However, because of hdf5 version conflicts it is usually better anyway to build the reader against the headers that come with a visit installation. Cactus isn't needed here at all. Please comment on the corresponding ticket [1] if you have an opinion about this, e.g. if you use the C++ interface. If nobody speaks up the C++ interface will be dropped (by default) in about two weeks. It would still be possible to specify HDF5_ENABLE_CXX=yes in an optionlist to make sure it is present.
