Tests taking a long time
by Ian Hinder 01 Nov '12

01 Nov '12

Hi, For some reason, the automated tests are taking a very long time to run; more than the one hour wall time which I have given them. They used to run in under 10 minutes. Has something changed recently that could explain this, or should I look for problems on the cluster? -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

meeting minutes

Present were: Frank, Ian, Roland, Erik, Tanja, Josh, Peter, Steve, Bruno, Philipp ET release: * all tests pass on Datura * outstanding ticket flagged for the release: - AHFinderDirect allowing the number of horizon to change during a checkpoint recovery: Roland says the patch is good to go since he did the requested BBH test. - number of processes for testsuites: good to go * announce current favorite for release name (Oersted) on mailing list MHD paper: * no progress on BondiM test since Friday * Philipp's stellar collapse run is still running, passed bounce time. No error apparent at time of call, since then run crashed with NaN in magnetic field. Suspect this to be due to use of overlap zones. Will reduce size (no overlap zones at all also crashes). * Bruno and Josh will look at conclusion section * want to make sure that BondiM test (and stellar collapse test) are the only unfinished sections. Everything else should be ready. * will have MHD call on Thursday at 11am central time (9am PT, 12pm ET). Frank will book the conference line. Yours, Roland

GetComponents
by Erik Schnetter 25 Oct '12

25 Oct '12

Dear GetComponents users [The warning below concerns only the development version of the Einstein Toolkit from the past 24 hours.] Yesterday, I corrected a problem in GetComponents that would make it sometimes report errors about git repositories when, in fact, everything was fine: In general, to update a git repository that contains local, uncommitted changes, one first "stashes" these changes away, then updates the repository and resolves conflicts, and then "pops" the stashed changes again and resolves conflicts, if necessary. GetComponents would sometimes try to pop local changes when, in fact, there were none. In the process of correcting this, I introduced (and then corrected) another error. This would result in stashing local changes that were then never popped. Unless you are familiar with git, you may not realise that you now have stashed changes that need popping. In short: If you used a GetComponents checkout from the past 24 hours on git repositories with local changes, please check for stashed changes named "GetComponents-tmp". To do so, go to the respective repository, and then type "git stash list". To pop a stash manually, type "git stash help" and "git stash pop". -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Dissipation in McLachlan.
by Peter Diener 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Hi all, We have just commited a change to McLachlan in the development version of the Einstein toolkit. We have changed the default value for the parameter apply_dissipation from "always" to "never". Since the default value for the dissipation strength is zero, anybody who uses the default values shouldn't see any change (except for an improvement in speed). However, anybody who sets EpsDiss to anything different than zero and expects McLachlan to apply dissipation now also has to explicitly set apply_dissipation to "always". Cheers, Peter

Mailing lists
by Ian Hinder 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Hi, I have noticed that some users of the ET are not on the Cactus mailing list, and that some emails have been sent to the Cactus mailing list recently which might be important to the wider ET community. So, if you use Cactus, I recommend that you join the Cactus users' mailing list, users(a)cactuscode.org: http://cactuscode.org/about/mailinglists/index.php Carpet used to have its own mailing list, but discussion about Carpet now happens on the Cactus mailing list instead. Similarly, if you use the Simulation Factory, there is a mailing list for that as well: http://simfactory.org/simfactory/community/ -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder
