short TOV parfile for use in tutorial
by Roland Haas 27 Sep '18

27 Sep '18

Hello Bruno, all, I remember that you had a very short running tov parfile (10 minutes) that you used at the workshop in Lisbon (most likely still in the Jupyter server host). This seems like a useful file to use in the ET new users tutorial since it means that one more quickly gets results on can plot. Would you be ok if we used that parfile for that purpose (and do you think that doing so is reasonable)? Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. by Vogel, Darren Z 26 Sep '18

Hello, I'm attempting to build the Einstein Toolkit for the first time, following the new users guide online. I keep getting the attached error at the end of compilation. I cannot seem to figure out what it means. Here are my specs: Running Ubuntu 18.04 on VMware Workstation 14, giving 2GB RAM, 2 cores, and 20GB of hard drive space. 8th Gen Core i7-8550U processor Any help would be appreciated. how to run from a checkpoint
by Qingwen Wang 26 Sep '18

26 Sep '18

Dear all, I was trying to restart a job script from a checkpoint, but it gives me the error Simulation name: binarybh9 Error: job id is negative Aborting Simfactory I had used "simfactory/bin/sim create-run" to start this, and when I restarted it, I simply change "create-run" to "run". It would be nice if anyone knows what's wrong with the code. Thanks a lot. Regards, Qingwen

question about Cactus::cctk_final_time
by 黃世杰 24 Sep '18

24 Sep '18

i have runned the simulation of binary neutron stars in the gallery example, and at first, the set of Cactus::cctk_final_time(in the parameters file --"NsNsToHMNS.par") is 2500, but i want to prolong it, so i modify the Cactus::cctk_final_time from 2500 to 7000, and the parameterfiles at the ~/Cactus/par/ and /scratch2/scratchdirs/jie9/simulations/NsNsToHMNS/output-000X/ I both modify, but the simulation still stop when the time come to 2500, how could i do ? Best, jie

meeting minutes for 2018-09-24
by Roland Haas 24 Sep '18

24 Sep '18

Present: Roland, Bill, Chris, Helvi, Sam, Zach, Shawn Spam on trac: * currently anonymous posting has been disabled * Steve will look into alternative captcha * Roland suggests that something simple, customized (eg. "What was Einstein's given name?") would work (or even "Type 'Einstein'"). ET release: * Wu release with major feature being the GiRaFFE thorn * major fix in MHD code for GRHydro * glitch in announcement email not mentioning MHD fix * will work out better way to double check announcement emails eg by posting it on the wiki or as a pull request to have more eyes on it ET meeting: * many new student users, few professorial level new users * new user sessions ** using Cactus ** visualization ** using Carpet ** NRPy+ intro ** worked well using LSU jupyterhub server * improve visibility of ET * foster collaboration between ET users in particular in the EU, common computer time grands * benchmarks and performance comparison between ET, BAM, GRChombo * non Cactus codes in ET: Peter Diener has a self-force code that he would like to contribute. Need to decide how to handle and present this. * waveform modeling, eccentric waveforms * pressing issue is lack of good initial data for system involving matter * the memory usage issue in ticket https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2194 was discussed among the participants * Helvi will organize the next meeting in London (most likely) ET tutorial: * will move back to NCSA * Roland and Steve to set this up Unanswered questions: * http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2018-September/006504.html has not response Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Hello, I'm using pgfortran and have the following set: CC = pgcc CXX = pgc++ F90 = pgfortran F77 = pgfortran .... F77_OPTIMISE_FLAGS = -fast -O2 -mp F90_OPTIMISE_FLAGS = -fast -O2 -mp FFLAGS = -O3 -fast -Mipa=fast,inline -tp=x64 -CB FPPFLAGS = -DCCTK_DISABLE_OMP_COLLAPSE .... Also, for some reason I didn't get the response. I had to go to the archives page to see your response.

scientific software developer position in Italy
by Bruno Giacomazzo 19 Sep '18

19 Sep '18

Dear All, there is an open position for a scientific software developer in Padova (Italy). See below for details. Interested candidates should write to Dr. Michela Mapelli (michela.mapelli(a)inaf.it). Best regards, Bruno ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Mapelli, Michela <michela.mapelli(a)inaf.it> Date: mer 19 set 2018 alle ore 14:35 Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to this open position in my team: Postdoc / scientific software developer for the ERC project DEMOBLACK ------------------------------------------------------------------------ We invite applications for a postdoctoral/ scientific software developer position funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant DEMOBLACK led by Dr. Michela Mapelli. The DEMOBLACK team will investigate the formation channels of merging stellar black hole binaries in the field and in star clusters, by means of population synthesis and dynamical simulations. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and maintenance of our population-synthesis code SEVN (written in C++) and to the development of software for direct N-body simulations. We are looking for applicants with excellent knowledge of C++ and python. Experience with GPU programming (CUDA or OpenCL) and parallel programming will be an advantage. The successful candidate will join an active research team, working in the vibrant research environment of the University of Padova and of the Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Enquiries about the scientific project can be addressed to Michela Mapelli: michela.mapelli(a)inaf.it <michela.mapelli(a)oapd.inaf.it> More details about the research group can be found at http://web.pd.astro.it/mapelli/group.html The earliest possible starting date is December 2018, but later dates are also possible. Applicants must have a Master's degree in Computer Science, Astrophysics, Physics or related disciplines. The appointment is for 2 years, with a possible extension up to 5 years depending on performance. Gross salaries range approximately from 28000 to 40000 EUR/year, depending on experience, more than adequate for local costs of living. weird waveform for binary black holes system
by Qingwen Wang 18 Sep '18

18 Sep '18

Hi all, I am using Einstein toolkit to simulate binary black hole merger, and I was trying to repeat https://einsteintoolkit.org/gallery/bbh/index.html. But I end up with a weird waveform like(I did not finish all the simulation, but it has started to look weird of the peak around t=300) [image: image.png] rather than(the right one ) [image: image.png] I am planning to run it again for a longer time, it would be really helpful if anyone knows what's wrong with my last running so that I can edit it before redoing it. Thank you for your time. Regards, Qingwen
