Workshop: Advances in Computational Relativity
by Barry Wardell 06 Aug '20

06 Aug '20

Dear Einstein Toolkit users, We would like to invite you to the first workshop as part of the semester-long program "Advances in Computational Relativity". This first workshop will provide an overview of both state-of-the-art and open challenges drawing from multiple themes (theory, analysis of the equations, computation, and data analysis) within the broad context of Einstein's general relativity theory. Many of the talks will focus on the computation of gravitational radiation from compact bodies using numerical and analytical approaches for both current and future detectors. Speakers will draw from physics, astronomy, and applied and pure mathematics. We plan to hold hands-on tutorial workshops as part of the afternoon sessions. Due to COVID-19, this workshop will be held online. Please apply using the link "Apply with Cube" at the workshop website ( https://icerm.brown.edu/programs/sp-f20/w1/) if you would like to participate in this workshop. We also welcome participation as part of the semester-long program (https://icerm.brown.edu/programs/sp-f20) which will include working groups in areas of interest including deep learning and perturbation theory, as well as regular seminars. Program Organizing Committee: Douglas Arnold, U. Minnesota Scott Field, UMass Dartmouth Gaurav Khanna, UMass Dartmouth Deirdre Shoemaker, Georgia Tech Saul Teukolsky, Cornell Niels Warburton, UC Dublin Barry Wardell, UC Dublin

Roland, That was it! Thank you! Your talk Yesterday was really useful. Will you please share the link where I can find the Jupyter notebook you presented? For whatever reason, from https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/ I cannot access but 5 tutorials: CactusTutorial-08-2020.ipynb<https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/user/babiuc/notebooks/CactusTutorial-08-2020.ipynb> CactusTutorial.ipynb<https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/user/babiuc/notebooks/CactusTutorial.ipynb> CreatingANewThorn-HeatEqn.ipynb<https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/user/babiuc/notebooks/CreatingANewThorn-HeatEqn.ipy…> CreatingANewThorn-WaveEqn.ipynb<https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/user/babiuc/notebooks/CreatingANewThorn-WaveEqn.ipy…> VisualizingOutput-WaveMoL.ipynb<https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/user/babiuc/notebooks/VisualizingOutput-WaveMoL.ipy…> thank you, Maria _______________________ Maria C. Please note that if there is *any* gcc-10 installed then simfactory will pick it up and use it. (copied from responses of mine to the same question on the users mailing list earlier): --8<-- Then please see here for a workaround: https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fbitbucket.org%2feinstei… https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fbitbucket.org%2feinstei… basically by adding -fcommon and -fallow-argument-mismatch to the compiler flags. The tutorial notebook https://github.com/nds-org/jupyter-et/blob/master/CactusTutorial.ipynb also contains information on the workaround. A proper fix is ready to be deployed to the released code but we were holding off until after the workshop to not accidentally introduce more (unknown) issues on top of the one for which we have a workaround. To fix this you can edit the file configs/sim/OptionList and also (the path might be a bit fuzzy): simfactory/mdb/optionlists/generic-mp-10.cfg and replace all gcc-10, g++-10 and gfortran-10 by the -9 flavors or by adding the -fXXX options that I had mentioned before. Afterwards you will have to run: simfactory/bin/sim build --reconfig which will instruct simfactory to update the build options using the values in configs/sim/OptionList . --8<-- Yours, Roland > Hi, > > I have an error when running the commands from the Jupyter tutorial on my Mac laptop, on terminal: > ___ > > > ------------------------------------------------------ > > There was 1 error during execution of the CST > > This must be corrected before compilation can proceed > > ------------------------------------------------------ > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------ > > Warnings were generated during execution of the CST > > ------------------------------------------------------ > > > > CST error 1: > > -> Configuration script for thorn LAPACK returned exit code 2 > > (no error message) > > > ------------------------------------------------------ > > > make[1]: *** [/Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/config-data/make.thornlist] Error 1 > > ___ > > > When I am trying to run the commands from the Jupyter notebook, the error is in LoopControl: > ____ > > COMPILING Carpet/LoopControl/src/type_sizes.F90 > /Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/build/LoopControl/type_sizes.f90:57:33: > > 56 | type_sizes(1) = CCTK_PointerTo(vec(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(vec(1)) > | 2 > 57 | type_sizes(2) = CCTK_PointerTo(space(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(space(1)) > | 1 > Error: Type mismatch between actual argument at (1) and actual argument at (2) (TYPE(lc_space_t)/TYPE(lc_vec_t)). > /Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/build/LoopControl/type_sizes.f90:57:60: > > 56 | type_sizes(1) = CCTK_PointerTo(vec(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(vec(1)) > | 2 > 57 | type_sizes(2) = CCTK_PointerTo(space(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(space(1)) > | 1 > Error: Type mismatch between actual argument at (1) and actual argument at (2) (TYPE(lc_space_t)/TYPE(lc_vec_t)). > /Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/build/LoopControl/type_sizes.f90:58:33: > > 56 | type_sizes(1) = CCTK_PointerTo(vec(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(vec(1)) > | 2 > 57 | type_sizes(2) = CCTK_PointerTo(space(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(space(1)) > 58 | type_sizes(3) = CCTK_PointerTo(control(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(control(1)) > | 1 > Error: Type mismatch between actual argument at (1) and actual argument at (2) (TYPE(lc_control_t)/TYPE(lc_vec_t)). > /Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/build/LoopControl/type_sizes.f90:58:62: > > 56 | type_sizes(1) = CCTK_PointerTo(vec(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(vec(1)) > | 2 > 57 | type_sizes(2) = CCTK_PointerTo(space(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(space(1)) > 58 | type_sizes(3) = CCTK_PointerTo(control(2)) - CCTK_PointerTo(control(1)) > | 1 > Error: Type mismatch between actual argument at (1) and actual argument at (2) (TYPE(lc_control_t)/TYPE(lc_vec_t)). > make[3]: *** [type_sizes.F90.o] Error 1 > make[2]: *** [make.checked] Error 2 > make[1]: *** [/Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/lib/libthorn_LoopControl.a] Error 2 > make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... > COMPILING configs/sim/bindings/build/SpaceMask/cctk_ThornBindings.c > Creating /Users/babiuc/ETK2020/Cactus/configs/sim/lib/libthorn_SpaceMask.a > make: *** [sim] Error 2 > > ____ > > This is with gcc-10. > > Maria > _______________________ > Maria C. Question about iterations in ETK
by 刘屿 04 Aug '20

04 Aug '20

Hello Cactus users, I have a question about tov_ET.par in CactusTutorial-08-2020. CarpetRegrid2 only sets two levels on the grid structure. INFO (Carpet): Grid structure (superregions, coordinates): [0][0][0] exterior: [-6,-6,-6] : [28,28,28] : [2,2,2] [1][0][0] exterior: [-3,-3,-3] : [26,26,26] : [1,1,1] Why the course level evolves in time every 512 steps. ------------------------------------------------- Iteration Time | *me_per_hour | *ROBASE::rho | | maximum ------------------------------------------------- 0 0.000 | 0.0000000 | 0.0012800 512 0.500 | 2.545256e+03 | 0.0012770 I noticed the parameter Carpet::max_refinement_levels = 10, but it does not seem to affect the grid structure. I think this is important for us to set I/O and CarpetRegrid2::regrid_every. Thank you best regards --------------------------- Yu Liu PhD Student Department of Astronomy Beijing Normal University

Accessing the summer school tutorial server
by Alessandro Ciarfella 31 Jul '20

31 Jul '20

Hi, Don't know if this is the right place where to post this question but I'll try. I tried to access the tutorial for the upcoming summerschool at https://etk.cct.lsu.edu <https://etk.cct.lsu.edu/>. However, when I try to click on CILogon I am redirected to a page where I have to sign in my Github account. However, having been registered to the tutorial through my university account ac4870(a)rit.edu <mailto:ac4870@rit.edu> when I try to login through my Github account I get this error message. 403: Forbidden. Alessandro is not authorized. New gmail accounts are not currently being accepted. Please use your university account or Github. How can I solve this issue? Can this be related to the fact that I had previously created a github account to access the Tutorial For New Users on the Einstein relativistic toolkit website? Thanks, Alessandro Ciarfella

Thanks again Roland, It does seem that your suspicion is correct; it appears that I do have both gcc-10 and gfortran-10 installed, and the Macports selection is being overridden. See the attached text files you requested. Odd. The error message looks like the one gfortran-10 produces. Can you please attach, as a text file, the content of the file configs/sim/config-info as well as the file configs/sim/OptionList ? There is some automatism in simfactory's setup-silent and it will *first* probe for gcc-10 and gcc-mp-10 and only of that does not exist will it use "gcc" (ie the macports select setting is effectively ignored). Can you also please check if you have gfortran-10 installed at all (the executable is called gfortran-mp-10)? If possible, it would be best to keep the conversation on the mailing list by using "reply-all" (I try to set reply-to but sometimes I miss it). Hi, I’m setting up the ET for the first time in preparation for the upcoming workshop tutorials, and I’ve ran into some “mismatch” issues (see attached screenshot) upon executing the following command line: ./simfactory/bin/sim build -j2 --thornlist ../einsteintoolkit_08_2020.th The error messages give no indication whatsoever as to how to fix them, so I’m at a loss here. Any help would be much appreciated.
