CCTK_LOOP3_INT macro with Fortran and OpenMP
by Miguel Zilhão 01 Mar '20

01 Mar '20

hi all, i'm trying to use the CCTK_LOOP3_INT macro in a Fortran 90 code. following the example in Carpet/TestLoopControl, i've done: #include "cctk.h" #include "cctk_Arguments.h" #include "cctk_Parameters.h" #include "cctk_Functions.h" #include "loopcontrol.h" subroutine myroutine( CCTK_ARGUMENTS ) use loopcontrol implicit none DECLARE_CCTK_ARGUMENTS DECLARE_CCTK_PARAMETERS DECLARE_CCTK_FUNCTIONS CCTK_LOOP3_INT_DECLARE(int3) (...) CCTK_LOOP3_INT(int3, i, j, k) (...) CCTK_ENDLOOP3_INT(int3) end subroutine myroutine this seems to work fine. however, if i add the OpenMP statements to the loop in the "usual" way: !$OMP PARALLEL DO COLLAPSE(3) & !$OMP PRIVATE(i,j,k, (...)) CCTK_LOOP3_INT(int3, i, j, k) (...) CCTK_ENDLOOP3_INT(int3) !$OMP END PARALLEL DO the code fails to compile with a bunch of errors: Error: Unexpected !$OMP SINGLE statement at (1) Error: Unexpected assignment statement at (1) Error: Unexpected !$OMP END SINGLE statement at (1) (...) i've searched around but could not find such an example in the ET thorns. is this possible to do? can someone point me in the right direction? thanks, Miguel

libstdc++ error after compilation
by Swarnim Shashank 28 Feb '20

28 Feb '20

Hello all, I am currently trying to run EinsteinToolkit on a cluster at IUCAA, Pune. Cactus compiled successfully but when I try to run a simulation (eg. HelloWorld here) I am getting the following error: /mnt/home/project/cswarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim: /lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.8' not found (required by /mnt/home/project/c swarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim) /mnt/home/project/cswarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim: /lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.20' not found (required by /mnt/home/project /cswarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim) /mnt/home/project/cswarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim: /lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.21' not found (required by /mnt/home/project /cswarnim/ETK/simulations/helloworld/SIMFACTORY/exe/cactus_sim) The symlink in /lib64/libstdc++.so.6 is for libstdc++.so.6.0.19 After some googling, I found that I should use libstdc++.so.6.0.20. So I downloaded it and put LDFLAGS=-Wl,-rpath=/mnt/home/project/cswarnim/installations/libstdc++.so.6 in my optionlist (the path being the symlink to libstdc++.so.6.0.20). But it did not work, so I tried: setenv LD_PRELOAD /mnt/home/project/cswarnim/installations/libstdc++.so.6 And I am still getting the same (error) result. Please let me know what I could do to make it work. Thanks and Regards, Swarnim Shashank

Meeting minutes for 2020-02-27
by Steven R. Brandt 27 Feb '20

27 Feb '20

Date: 2/27/2020 Chair: Ian Minutes: Roland/Steve Present: Roland, Steven, Peter, Liu, Ian, Bill, Zach, Maria, Yosef updates on codes: * Roland reminded reviewees to have their codes included in master * had a discussion about whether it is worthwhile to delay releases if codes are not ready * differing opinions on how much to strive for a 6 month release cycle * requirement to go into master at this point is that including it must not fail * presync: Steve should be able to get into master until Mar 1st * delay self-force code: likely delay until next release * simfactory python3: all clusters still offer python2, is default on most of them. May not want to do the hard switch. For simfactory3 the "sim" tool is python2 and has a rudimentary parser of the mdb and then looks for python3 (see https://bitbucket.org/ianhinder/simfactory3/src/master/runpython). Current python3 port of simfactory may be a bit more unstable due to python3's changed string handling. Solution is to check that the machine has locale set properly. Likely delay by one release. timeline of ET release * https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details#Schedule_for_ET_20… * timeline is not objected by anyone on the call, including March 1 cutoff for getting things into master * links on agenda wiki page: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Meeting_agenda are for ease use * Roland will not automatically approve tickets without review between now and the release. websites related to ET: * cactuscode.org: DNS entry needs to be updated, Ian and Steve are in contact with LSU support * no progress yet in conversion of cactuscode.org content to markdown / away from PHP SPEC CPU v8 benchmark * https://www.spec.org/cpuv8 * https://www.spec.org/cpu2017/Docs/benchmarks/507.cactuBSSN_r.html * Cactus (ML_BSSN) is in SPEC2017 and should be updated * would want current version to be included * Jian Tao has started the process, Erik has weighed in pointing out the newer version of ML_BSSN * need a volunteer to work on including it, tentative agreement by Steve * would like to get previous submission Unanswered questions: * Roland will add some (crude) blacklisting facility to remember answered questions * Steve handled Bilal's hello world * Issue of compilation of ETK on Ubuntu 18.04 (Federico Cipolletta): was resolved in private conversation.

issue of compilation of ETK on Ubuntu 18.04
by Federico Cipolletta 27 Feb '20

27 Feb '20

Dear EinsteiToolkit user support, I am recently experiencing some issues compiling the ETK standard thornlist (version "Mayer") on my Workstation with Ubuntu 18.04 as OS. Once I could compile the ETK (version "Tesla") correctly but after some recent upgrades, I cannot compile any thornlist within my machine. So I tried downloading the ETK most recent version (namely "Mayer) and build the standar thornlist from scratch, but I am always getting the same error. I attach the compilation output of my last trial (namely the "ET" configuration). In order to build the ET configuration, I used the following command: ./simfactory/bin/sim build ET --machine=WS03 --thornlist=./thornlists/ einsteintoolkit.th >& compilation.out The WS03 machine was defined by me in a "standard" way, and the WS03.ini file is calling the generic.cfg, generic.run and generic.sub files. The current version of gcc, g++, gfortran and cpp compilers that I am using are the 7.4.0 GNU ones, although I tried also the 5.5 and 8.3 ones (always getting the same error). In order to set the version of the compiler, I am currently using the following command (for gcc - for the other compiler it is equivalent): sudo update-alternatives --config gcc As you can see, the last lines in the compilation.out files are the following: Checking status of thorn CalcK COMPILING EinsteinAnalysis/CalcK/src/CalcK.F90 f951: Fatal Error: Reading module ‘cctk’ at line 1310 column 20: Unexpected EOF compilation terminated. /home/federico/Documents/EinsteinToolkit/Cactus/configs/ET/config-data/make.config.rules:409: recipe for target 'CalcK.F90.o' failed make[3]: *** [CalcK.F90.o] Error 1 /home/federico/Documents/EinsteinToolkit/Cactus/lib/make/make.thornlib:112: recipe for target 'make.checked' failed make[2]: *** [make.checked] Error 2 /home/federico/Documents/EinsteinToolkit/Cactus/lib/make/make.configuration:181: recipe for target '/home/federico/Documents/EinsteinToolkit/Cactus/configs/ET/lib/libthorn_CalcK.a' failed make[1]: *** [/home/federico/Documents/EinsteinToolkit/Cactus/configs/ET/lib/libthorn_CalcK.a] Error 2 Makefile:256: recipe for target 'ET' failed make: *** [ET] Error 2 Do you have any suggestions for me? Best regards, Federico Cipolletta.

carpetcode.org
by Ian Hinder 27 Feb '20

Hi Erik, It looks like carpetcode.org<http://carpetcode.org> is down. Do you know what the situation is? We can add it to uptimerobot if you like. As I remember, it was hosted on stellarcollapse.org<http://stellarcollapse.org/>. It could also be converted to github pages, if we don't want to continue having to use a self-maintained server. -- Ian Hinder Research Software Engineer University of Manchester, UK

Documents lack details
by 刘昊阳 27 Feb '20

27 Feb '20

Dear colleague: I'm Liu Haoyang, a fresher of EinsteinToolkit from University of Chinese Academy of Science. I found that some Thorn's documents in Thorn Guide lack detailed description about their variables' function, such as "Carpet" and "ReflectionSymmetry". And it seems that access to https://carpetcode.org/ is restricted. Is there any other material for such Thorns I can learn about? And how can I have access to the website of Carpet? Liu Haoyang

Boundary issues solving wave equations with MoL
by Severin Frank 22 Feb '20

22 Feb '20

Dear all, I'm trying to solve a wave equation that describes radial oscillations of a TOV star, depending on radius r and t in Llama multipatch coordinates (Thornburg04). The equation has a structure of Ẍ=AX′+BX″+CX\ddot{X} = A X' + B X'' + C X I rewrote it as set of coupled equations to evolve it with the MoL thorn: X˙=Π H˙=Π′\dot{H} = \Pi' Π˙=AH+BH′+CX\dot{\Pi} = AH + B H' +C X or as noted in my code as it is attached: Pidot = A*H + B*drH + C*Xi Hdot = drPi Xidot = Pi For MoL registered as evolved variables are Xi with rhs Xidot, Pi with rhs Pidot and H with rhs Hdot. The spatial derivatives drH and drPi are also calculated during the schedule of MoL_CalcRHS in my thorn. Boundary conditions are applied for r>R and an interval near the TOV radius r=R. if (grid_r(i,j,k) >= (TOV_surface - rprec) .AND. grid_r(i,j,k) <= (TOV_surface + rprec) )then H(i,j,k) = 0 drPi(i,j,k) = 0 else if ( grid_r(i,j,k) > (TOV_surface + rprec) ) then Xi(i,j,k) = 0 Pi(i,j,k) = 0 H(i,j,k) = 0 end if if (grid_r(i,j,k) > (TOV_surface + rprec) )then Xidot(i,j,k) = 0 Hdot(i,j,k) = 0 Pidot(i,j,k) = 0 else if (grid_r(i,j,k) >= (TOV_surface - rprec) .AND. grid_r(i,j,k) <= (TOV_surface + rprec) )then Hdot(i,j,k) = 0 Pidot(i,j,k) = B(i,j,k)*drH(i,j,k) + C(i,j,k)*Xi(i,j,k) end if Problems occur close to the surface of the star. My evolved variables start do diverge close to the surface after a few iterations. Looking at the data it seems that the divergence is founded by the values of H. I tried following things to encircle the issues: * If I put Pidot = B*drH + C*Xi the values seem to be ok, whereas for Pidot = A*H the divergence appears. The A-factor only amplifies this behavior. If I put Pidot = H it behaves the same, but much slower. * If I use drXi instead of H (as it is commented out), it does not make any difference. * If I enlarge the size of the interval (e.g. TOV_surface + 5*rprec) the same divergence appears, but shifted towards grid points next to the interval. Also the divergence appears a few iterations later. * If I change the drXi or H values close to the surface manually (e.g. using a backsided differentiation, or put specific values by hand) it also shifts the divergence (like above). So far I don't know how to remedy this issue, but maybe I'm overlooking something obvious. Does anyone have an idea on what I could try? Thanks a lot! Best regards and merry Christmas, Severin Frank
