Thanks Bruno, David! @all: this is a lot of great material. I put my question forward to the ET list to initiate some discussion about how we can efficiently bundle it, e.g. on the website's gallery, maybe in a somewhat similar as the SXS collaboration does. cheers, Helvi =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Marie-Curie Research Fellow Dep. outreach and visibility of the toolkit
by helvi witek 19 Oct '17

19 Oct '17

Dear all, let me pick up on our discussion on the visibility of the Einstein Toolkit within the LIGO/VIRGO Scientific collaboration, our scientific community in general and the public that we had during the workshop last week. In the end of the week we are opening our traveling exhibition "Unraveling the dark universe" <http://serviastro.am.ub.edu/twiki/bin/view/ServiAstro/UniversFosc> and, as probably many of you these days, we will have a number of outreach talks about gravitational waves. In this context I was looking for animations produced with the toolkit, in addition to the BBH material that I already had from the SXS collaboration, to give more credit to it. I noticed a few things that we could improve - update the gallery on the website. At the moment the only animation of an event is that by Barry for GW150914. It would be nice to have more of a collection for the other events, and in particular for GW170817. As first step we could collect links to the youtube channels of different groups. - that brings me to a second suggestion: should we bundle those animations, e.g., in a ET youtube channel? At the moment, a quick search leads to filmed talks and lectures (which is important, too, of course), but try the same for SXS and you'll get a list of animations by the collaboration. A first step to give more visibility to the toolkit could be to add the logo to the credits. This is essentially to spark some discussion, and if there is interest, we can follow up on it in one of the next calls. cheers, Helvi =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Marie-Curie Research Fellow Dep. compilation on marenostrum 4
by Miguel Zilhão 19 Oct '17

19 Oct '17

hi all, i've been compiling the latest ET on marenostrum 4, and there were a couple of issues i'd like to ask: 1. on marenostrum, they bundle a lot of mpi-related tools on modules. in particular, one of the default modules that is loaded is called 'impi'. this module sets the global variable $MPI to 'impi', ie $ echo $MPI impi this seems to severely interfere with the Cactus building process. at the configuration stage i get the following: Configuring with flesh MPI Warning: use of flesh MPI via MPI option is deprecated and should be replaced with the thorn ExternalLibraries/MPI and its MPI_DIR option MPI selected, but no known MPI method - what is "impi" ? to workaround this problem, i've unloaded the module (module unload impi), which undefines the $MPI variable. after this, the configuration stage works fine. this seems to me like a bug, though. after all, a cluster-wide global variable called $MPI seems like a natural thing to exist in a lot of these machines... should the building of Cactus rely on the non-existence of such a variable? the other inconvenient thing is that, by unloading the impi module, one also removes from $PATH the mpirun command. so one has to unload the module for compiling the code, and then load it back to be able to run it. 2. i was not able to compile with any of the provided intel compilers (with gcc it worked fine). i know there are known issues with some versions of the intel compilers; is there some sort of list of intel compilers that are known to work? i could maybe try to ask the technical support if they could make those specific versions available... thanks, Miguel

skipping SYNC in postrestrict
by Roland Haas 18 Oct '17

18 Oct '17

Hello all, does anyone feel confident to state if / when one can skip the SYNC in POSTRESTRICT ? Assuming all computation by user thorns in the bin is purely pointwise of course. My run has no symmetries, and (for the sake of the argument) assume that the resolution is high enough so that the buffer region of level N+1 is not affected by the grid poinst in level N that are affected by restriction from level N+1. So basically (as far as I understand this) my question boils down do: does restriction fill in values in ghost points? Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Gabrielle Allen elected APS Fellow.
by Eloisa Bentivegna 18 Oct '17

18 Oct '17

Dear all, October has already been packed with many exciting news for our community. I now add with great joy to the list: Gabrielle Allen, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and Cactus veteran, has been elected a 2017 Fellow of the American Physical Society "for international leadership in development of widely used simulation frameworks for numerical relativity, relativistic astrophysics, and other areas, laying a foundation for many groups to address complex problems in multi-messenger astronomy.” Anyone familiar with Gabrielle’s tireless commitment to large-scale code infrastructures as well as to collaborative science, including the very foundation of the Einstein Toolkit, knows just how well deserved this accolade is. Hearty congratulations, Gab! Eloisa

About the thorn Einstein exact
by Nisa Amir 17 Oct '17

17 Oct '17

Hello, I am new to Einstein toolkit and m doing my resarch on it for M.phil dissertion. Can you please guide me how to add a metric in polar coordinates in Einstein exact thorn in Einstein toolkit and how to generate a new thorn for this metric using kranc package. your help will be highly appreciated. <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2>

Present: Anshu Gupta, Bill, Chris, Samual, Vassili, Yosef, Erik, Roland, Qian update on Euro ET workshop in Mallorca, Oct 11-14, http://grg.uib.es/EinsteinToolkit2017/\ * no update due to lack of organizers thorns for inclusion: GiRaFFE, RNSID. Review status? * GiRaFFE on Roland's todo * RNSID orphaned Jenkins status update * server up again, have failing tests * will move URL from barrywardell.net to something with EinsteinToolkit.org in the name * Suggestion, for a small official organization to legally own DNS entries for einsteintoolkit.org. No objections. * Jenkins alternative used by HPX circleci may be an option to avoid having to self-host Comet lustre data corruption update * SDSC support has working lustre client in testing on some nodes, after rollout to all nodes we should be fine again Next ET release date * aim for February release, preparation in January No ET call next week on Oct. 9th due to ET meeting in Mallorca * Steve, Peter, Roland attending New ET tutorial machine almost up and running * currently configured for moderator approval by Steve for accounts * https://www.einsteintoolkit.nationaldataservice.org/#/ Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Hi, A quick update: I have recreated the Jenkins master and build nodes from backups, and have the new machines running. I am still waiting to hear from the NCSA security team concerning exactly what the vulnerability was. I can't make Jenkins available publicly until we are confident that the vulnerability is not still exposed. The same 5 tests that had been failing before are still failing, but I don't see any failures in McLachlan. Re: [Users] SPH in einstein toolkit
by Philip Chang 26 Sep '17

Hi Erik, When you say most people, what do you mean? Is there an implementation of SPH in a true dynamical spacetime? I know there are a few under the assumption of conformal flatness, but I am not aware of anyone with SPH in dynamical spacetime. Related to this, is there a reference I can look at which write out the hydro equations in detail. It is not immediately obvious to me that Rosswog's paper writes it as a hydrodynamic equation on the coordinate manifold with lapse and shift.
