Hi Miguel, everyone, the Spanish Supercomputing Center (BSC/RES) opened this year's call for scientific workshops. Would that be something to support the Einstein Toolkit meeting in Lisbon next year? Please check the information below and their website. The proposal does not look to involved and the BSC/RES would fund up to 3000euros per accepted event. The deadline is 18th December. cheers, Helvi =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Marie-Curie Research Fellow Dep. Re: [Users] Fedora 27 Compilation error
by ZhiChao Zhao 21 Nov '17

21 Nov '17

If you enable 'checkpoint', it doesn't matter when your machine encounters a power failure. Because the program will continue its evolution at the " checkpoint time". If you want to use this feature, the following configures in parameter will be helpfull. ''' IOHDF5::checkpoint = "yes" IO::checkpoint_dir = $parfile IO::checkpoint_ID = "yes" IO::checkpoint_every_walltime_hours = 6.0 CarpetIOHDF5::checkpoint_every_divisor = 55552 IO::checkpoint_keep=4 IO::checkpoint_on_terminate = "yes" IO::recover = "autoprobe" IO::recover_dir = $parfile ''' Best wishies, ZhiChao Zhao. -- Theoretical Physics Division, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, P.O.Box 918-4, Beijing,100049, P.R.China zhaozc(a)ihep.ac.cn

Fedora 27 Compilation error
by iconoklastic91＠gmail.com 21 Nov '17

21 Nov '17

Fedora 27 has just been released in final form, I did not expect to find any previous references to it yet. (I'm using x86_64, of course.) I preferred to use Fedora because I had little trouble getting it to hibernate, which might be important when using this software on a primitive computer. In the event of a power failure, although not frequent, the job would not be terminated by the event. The only problem I had encountered with Fedora 26 was with openmpi. Fedora does not put it into the standard search path, but into /usr/lib64/openmpi/bin, which must be added. I upgraded Fedora 26 to 27 in place, leaving the Cactus installation untouched. The only problem I had with it was that Fedora 27 removed /usr/lib64/libgsl.so.19, which I had to add after the upgrade was completed. Then I attempted to install Cactus on a freshly-installed Fedora 27 installation. Things went well for a while, but eventually I encountered this: COMPILING arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/RegisterSymmetries.ccCOMPILING arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/Startup.ccCreating /home/jontester/Cactus/configs/sim/lib/libthorn_ML_BSSN.amake: *** [Makefile:260: sim] Error 2 I would be interested to know why this occurred. For the present time it does not inconvenience me, but I'm sure the software will continue to evolve. (My name isn't Jon Tester, but I use this user for experimental software.)

Cartoon2D with the modern thorns?
by Jonah Miller 20 Nov '17

20 Nov '17

Hi all, Has anyone run a simulation with Cartoon2D, Carpet, and McLachlan and/or GRHydro? If so, would you be willing to share a parameter file? I'm interested in doing this and I just wanted to check if there has been bitrot in Cartoon2D or if there are any easily avoided gotchas. Thanks! Best, Jonah Miller

Postdoctoral positions in GRMHD at the Rochester Institute of Technology
by Carlos Lousto 20 Nov '17

20 Nov '17

Postdoctoral positions at the Rochester Institute of Technology The Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation (CCRG) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) anticipates filling several postdoctoral positions in the coming year. We are looking for postdoctoral candidates interested in working in the areas of modeling and simulation of gravitational waves sources and their electromagnetic counterparts, including binary black holes and neutron stars, and their astrophysical interpretation in the context of the LIGO-Virgo observations. We are also interested in candidates working in relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics simulations of accretion disks around supermassive black hole mergers, and their jet dynamics. The successful postdoctoral candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate on a broad range of research topics in gravitational physics. Our group is involved in several large collaborations, including the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), The Einstein Toolkit Consortium (http://einsteintoolkit.org), and a Petascale computing project with NCSA. There are many senior researchers working in a broad range of areas of gravitational physics and astrophysics at the CCRG. This includes Manuela Campanelli (Director), Sukanya Chakrabarti, Joshua Faber, Carlos Lousto, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Jason Nordhaus, Yosef Zlochower, John Whelan, and Hans-Peter Bischof, several postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. students (see http://ccrg.rit.edu/people for an overview on who is or has been at CCRG). The group also collaborates with many faculty, postdocs and graduate students in the larger astrophysics group (http://www.rit.edu/cos/astrophysics/), the school of Mathematical Sciences (http://www.rit.edu/cos/sms/) and the School of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.rit.edu/cos/physics/). The positions are for two or three years and renewable depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. CCRG researchers have access to several computing cluster facilities at national computing centers such as XSEDE and BlueWaters as well as two dedicated 1300 and 1600-core clusters hosted at the Center. More information about the CCRG is available at http://ccrg.rit.edu/ And about Rochester at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester,_New_York Applications should consist of a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae including publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. All materials should be sent electronically as soon as possible to: ccrg-postdoc[AT]ccrgweb.rit.edu For an overview of all job openings at CCRG please go to: http://ccrg.rit.edu/spotlight/jobs. Enquiries can be addressed to the center's Director: Manuela Campanelli, manuela[AT]astro[dot]rit[dot]edu Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Physics and Astronomy, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, New York 14623 USA Review of completed applications will begin as soon as available and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Deadline for applications is January 31st, 2018. Starting date can be as early as September, 2018. RIT is committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.

ET tutorial server at National Data Services Lab machines
by Roland Haas 19 Nov '17

19 Nov '17

Hello Steve, all, Steve's jupyter based new user tutorial is almost ready for use now. The jupyter server (might be unstable right now due to migrating services) can be reached at: https://www.einsteintoolkit.nationaldataservice.org A draft of the website with instructions can be found in the rhaas/new-users-tutorial of the ET website repository: git clone -b rhaas/new-users-tutorial https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/www einsteintoolkit-site (for a fresh checkout) or git fetch git checkout -b rhaas/new-users-tutorial (if you already have the website repo checked out) will make the branch available. The file too look at is documentation/new-user-tutorial.html eg. firefox documentation/new-user-tutorial.html Please note that the server hosting the jupyter server will go into *maintenance* on Monday so may not be available for testing just before the ET call. Please provide feedback and suggestions to Steve, me and/or the users mailing list. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://pgp.mit.edu .
