Re: [Users] Users Digest, Vol 88, Issue 3

New user experience: I had only a little trouble. I had not used the mpi tools before and didn't realize I should launch the sim with the mpirun command. I missed it in the documentation at the time but someone pointed this out to me and since then I haven't had much difficulty. I run on a single Linux box w/ 128GB ram and I had some hardware issue initially that I thought was software related. The tool seems to work well. I have also toyed with the LORENE code and things seems to be working. Once in a while there are missing code snippets that are not publicly available but that's understandable. I haven't tried the latest release yet but I hope to be at the workshop in august and learn more! meeting minutes for 2017-07-03

Present: Peter, Frank, Christian, Roberto, Ian, Bhavesh, Vassili, Steve ET release: * ML issues: ** -O0 and -O1 produce results as in correct values ** printf does make it work as well ** -O2 shows the issue but cannot be debugged due to most variables being optimized out ** has a bit of a feel of a compiler bug, Roland mentions that since Intel defaults to -ffast-math then we cannot really expect that results of -O0 and -O2 are identical and for the GRHydro code this resulted in NaN vs no NaN due to divisions by zero / infinity. ** want to test which machines are affected (Roland will test bluewaters, wheeler, bethe, comet, cori, edison, zwicky, qb, minerva) to check which machines are affected ** have test similar to what is in bbox.cc to check for compiler versions GRHydro issues: * seems gone, need to verify on different machines to be certain Intel compiler workaround for bbox.cc: * current patch to reduce optimization setting for Inel 17 to -O1 also needs to be applied for the (beta) of Intel 18 Jenkins: * machine is up and running * want to check with NCSA security persons to make get their ok * the flaw that was exploited should be fixed but want to be sure * web-interface turned off and only accessible for persons with login credent Next meeting: * Steve will host Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Improving the new user experience

Hi, I think it would be good to try to make an effort to make it easier for new users to get up and running with the ET. I am thinking of spending time on this at the workshop in August, and would like to ask for suggestions (and people who might want to help!). I have started a wiki page for this project, and added the first things that came to my mind: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Improving_the_new_user_experience Please feel free to add to this, or just reply to this email with suggestions. Especially if you are a new user, or if you have run workshop sessions with new users, it would be good to hear from you! What are the major obstacles? Alternatively, if you found everything to be smooth and easy, please also speak up! -- Ian Hinder http://members.aei.mpg.de/ianhin

Jenkins test status update
by Ian Hinder 04 Jul '17

04 Jul '17

Hi, It looks like some of the tests have been fixed in the last couple of weeks. Tests SphericalHarmonicRecon.regression_test/2procs Failed for 261 builds since build #894 on Tue Jun 20 00:49:18 UTC 2017 SphericalHarmonicReconGen.SpEC-dat-test/2procs Failed for 261 builds since build #894 on Tue Jun 20 00:49:18 UTC 2017 SphericalHarmonicReconGen.SpEC-h5-test/2procs Failed for 261 builds since build #894 on Tue Jun 20 00:49:18 UTC 2017 GRHydro.GRHydro_test_shock_weno/1procs Fixed GRHydro.GRHydro_test_shock_weno/2procs Fixed I have re-enabled emails from Jenkins to the mailing list test(a)einsteintoolkit.org. You can subscribe to this list at http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/mailman/listinfo/test if you want to receive these emails. (The "Failed for 261 builds..." part is a bit misleading because we are not using the build records from the previous Jenkins installation; we have started fresh from June. I think what this means is that the test has failed for 261 builds, but there are only records available since Jun 20.) Hello all, the workshop will be starting soon and in order to not lose time organizing the work items, please have a look at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u4-EgQM3DngPa0QfPoHZGVJy69jDrMvbmxOgxFm… and *add* your own interests and suggestions to the google doc.
