Loop on timelevels in POSTREGRID
by Federico Guercilena 13 Jun '17

13 Jun '17

Hello, I have a viscosity grid function I want to evaluate (among other places) at CCTK_POSTREGRID, so that it's consistent and ready for use at CCTK_EVOL. Problem is, the viscosity depends on the past timelevels of another grid function (the entropy). It seems Carpet loops on the timelevels in CCTK_POSTREGRID, which means that when the loop is on the "current" timelevel everything works fine, but when the loop moves onto some past timelevel, the other timelevels, the ones further in the past so to speak, are undefined. In particular the code segfaults when trying to access something like entropy_p_p[ijk], since entropy_p_p does not point to a valid memory address. I was able to fix this simply by checking if the pointers to past timelevels are valid, and breaking out of the function otherwise. This does the trick, but I was wondering if there's a more elegant, Cactus/Carpet native solution. My fix could maybe also slightly impact performance. Is there a way to disable the loop on timelevels in CCTK_POSTREGRID (but only for a given scheduled routine)? Or to schedule something after POSTREGRID, but before timelevels are rotated? As far as I know neither is possible, but hopefully I'm disregarding something. Thanks, Federico Guercilena

Bug fix in PITTNullCode
by Yosef Zlochower 02 Jun '17

02 Jun '17

Hi, Bela Szilagyi, Kevin Barkett, and Mark Scheel found a bug in the evolution equation for the metric variable J in the PITT Null Code. I pushed their fix to the master branch of the pittnullcode repository. The erroneous term may have contributed only a small amount to the News because it's a third-order term. -- Dr. Yosef Zlochower Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation Associate Professor School of Mathematical Sciences Rochester Institute of Technology 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, NY 14623 Office:74-2067 Phone: +1 585-475-6103 yosef(a)astro.rit.edu CONFIDENTIALITY NOTE: The information transmitted, including attachments, is intended only for the person(s) or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Jenkins down due to suspected security compromise
by Ian Hinder 02 Jun '17

02 Jun '17

Hi all, The security team at NCSA have blocked access to the ET Jenkins server due to a suspected security compromise. We are investigating. If you have in the past configured a jenkins build node which can be accessed from the jenkins master via ssh (i.e. you have added the jenkins public ssh key to an authorized_keys file), then you should immediately remove this key. Note that none of the jenkins build nodes apart from the one also hosted at NCSA was working at the time, so it's unlikely that any further attack was possible to those machines. We have backups from before the incident, so assuming we can fix the vulnerability, we should be able to get the system up and running in a few days. -- Ian Hinder http://members.aei.mpg.de/ianhin

DataVault — Einstein Toolkit Data Repository Pre-design Survey
by Qian Zhang 01 Jun '17

01 Jun '17

Dear Einstein Toolkit (ET) users, As part of an NSF software award, we are planning to build an open, community data repository for the Einstein Toolkit (ET). A core driver for this repository is to facilitate data retention and sharing. Datasets produced by the Einstein Toolkit will be archived in an open repository where they can be connected to publications via a DOI, and searched for via metadata. We would welcome hearing your thoughts on how to share and sustain the datasets produced by the ET. You are invited to participate in this research project because you are the user of the Einstein Toolkit and associated data. Your participation in this research study is *voluntary*. You may choose not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdLrcXVJXKZBv3PAIaXtgj6YMylPVxwx-c…> (and a follow-up survey), you may withdraw at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you withdraw from participating at any time, you will not be penalized. The procedure involves filling an online survey that will take approximately 20 minutes. Your responses will be *confidential* and we do not collect identifying information such as your name, email address or IP address. The survey (and a follow-up survey) questions will be about how you managed your simulation data regularly and related experience with using other data repositories. We will do our best to keep your information confidential. All data is stored in an electronic format. To help protect your confidentiality, the surveys will not contain information that will personally identify you. The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only and may be shared with related project personnels. If you have any questions about the research study, please contact Gabrielle Allen (gdallen(a)illinois.edu), Roland Hass (rhaas(a)illinois.edu) or Qian Zhang (zqian1(a)illinois.edu). This research has been reviewed according to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign IRB procedures for research involving human subjects. If you have any questions about your rights as a participant in this study or any concerns or complaints, please contact the University of Illinois Office for the Protection of Research Subjects at 217-333-2670 <(217)%20333-2670> or via email at irb(a)illinois.edu. The *link* to the survey is *here* <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdLrcXVJXKZBv3PAIaXtgj6YMylPVxwx-c…> (the same link as above). Postdoctoral positions at the Rochester Institute of Technology
by Carlos Lousto 30 May '17

30 May '17

Postdoctoral positions at the Rochester Institute of Technology The Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation (CCRG) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) anticipates filling several postdoctoral positions in the coming year. We are looking for postdoctoral candidates in the areas of modeling of gravitational waves sources and their electromagnetic counterparts with numerical relativity, and gravitational wave data analysis for LIGO and its astrophysical interpretation. In the area of gravitational-wave astronomy, we are particularly interested in candidates who are interested in the data analysis challenges involved in the detection of astrophysical gravitational wave sources; in the parameter estimation of binary compact objects, particularly binary black holes; in tests of general relativity enabled by gravitational wave measurements; and in the opportunities afforded by multimessenger astrophysics. In the area of computational astrophysics and astrophysical numerical relativity we are particularly interested in candidates who are interested in relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics (GRMHD) simulations of accretion disks around supermassive black hole mergers, and jet dynamics. This work will have direct impact on electromagnetic observations of active galactic nuclei, and is part of an ongoing long-term collaborative research effort with Julian Krolik at Johns Hopkins University, Scott Noble at the University of Tulsa, as well as other collaborators. In the area of numerical relativity we are interested in a candidate capable of working on the initial data and evolution of binary black holes and neutron stars in the framework of the Einstein- toolkit (ETK) and LazEv codes. We seek to develop and optimize current RIT's group codes as well as semianalytic efforts to model hybrid waveforms and final remnant formulae for LIGO. The ongoing effort includes several faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, as well as external collaborator Nakano at Kyoto University, and others. The successful postdoctoral candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate on a broad range of research topics in gravitational physics. Our group is involved in several large collaborations, including the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), The Einstein Toolkit Consortium (http://einsteintoolkit.org), and a Petascale computing project with NCSA. There are many senior researchers working in a broad range of areas of gravitational physics and astrophysics at the CCRG. This includes Manuela Campanelli (Director), Sukanya Chakrabarti, Joshua Faber, Carlos Lousto, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Jason Nordhaus, Yosef Zlochower, John Whelan, and Hans-Peter Bischof (a visualization expert), several postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. students (see http://ccrg.rit.edu/people for an overview on who is or has been at CCRG). The group also collaborates with many faculty, postdocs and graduate students in the larger astrophysics group (http://www.rit.edu/cos/astrophysics/), the school of Mathematical Sciences (http://www.rit.edu/cos/sms/) and the School of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.rit.edu/cos/physics/). The positions are for two or three years and renewable depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. CCRG researchers have access to several computing cluster facilities at national computing centers such as XSEDE and BlueWaters as well as a dedicated 1600-core cluster hosted at the Center. More information about the CCRG is available at http://ccrg.rit.edu/ And about Rochester at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester,_New_York Applications should consist of a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae including publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. All materials should be sent electronically as soon as possible to: ccrg-postdoc[AT]ccrgweb.rit.edu For an overview of all job openings at CCRG please go to: http://ccrg.rit.edu/spotlight/jobs. Enquiries can be addressed to the center's Director: Manuela Campanelli, manuela[AT]astro[dot]rit[dot]edu Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Physics and Astronomy, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, New York 14623 USA Review of completed applications will begin as soon as available and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Starting date can be as early as September, 2017. RIT is committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.
