HDF5 3D output separate time files
by Hayley Macpherson 22 Jun '17

22 Jun '17

Hello, I am using the Einstein Toolkit for cosmological simulations, and would like to ask a question regarding my HDF5 3D output. Currently I am outputting all 3D snapshots to one HDF5 file (as per default). I would like to have my output as separate files for each time snapshot, to help with ease of copying and visualisation in post processing. I found the following parameter in IOUtil, and changed it accordingly for a simulation: IO::out_timesteps_per_file = 1 However this made no difference to my output, I still had multiple time snapshots in the one file. Is there another way to separate my 3D HDF5 output into one file per snapshot? Any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated! Kind regards, Hayley Macpherson

release status
by Frank Loeffler 19 Jun '17

19 Jun '17

Hi A short update of the upcoming release: There are still outstanding issues that prevent going forward with the release (see https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_coordination for current information). The most important are: - Some McLachlan testsuites are still failing. Peter wasn't able to find time to look at it, and won't have for the coming week. We need a volunteer to work on these. This is ticket 1995. - ExternalLibraries/MPI prevents Cactus from linking if built from the thorn-sources, on (at least some) Linux systems. The issue is described in ticket 2049. - Both SphericalHarmonicReconGen tests fail, for at least apparently different reasons (but since one is a segfault you never know) Otherwise, the tests seem to run fine, on the few machines I've tested them on. We obviously need to test a lot more machines, which is also still out-standing. Frank

EU Einstein Toolkit 2017 & Symposium in Honor of Ed Seidel
by Bruno Giacomazzo 19 Jun '17

19 Jun '17

Dear Einstein Toolkit users and developers, this is to announce you two meetings that will take place in Mallorca (Spain) from October 11 to 14: the "EU Einstein Toolkit Workshop" and "Black Holes, Red Square, and Blue Waters: A Symposium in Honor of Edward Seidel’s 60th Birthday". The first three days (October 11-13) will be dedicated to presentations and discussions concerning the development and applications of the Einstein Toolkit and will be open to developers and anyone interested in numerical relativity, numerical (magneto-)hydrodynamics, cosmology, gravitational wave data analysis and related fields. The workshop will present recent developments and allow for discussions about future directions of code development and applications. Friday evening and Saturday 14 will be devoted to a special event: “Black Holes, Red Square, and Blue Waters: A Symposium in Honor of Edward Seidel’s 60th Birthday (EdFest)”. The symposium will start with an evening reception on October 13. There will then be a day of invited talks on October 14 followed by an evening event. Both the workshop and the symposium will take place at the Club Pollentia Resort near Alcúdia in Mallorca. Deadline for hotel reservation is July 5th. Deadline for abstract submission (only for the Einstein Toolkit workshop) is August 1st. Early registration deadline is July 15. More information can be found of the webpage of both events at http://grg.uib.es/EinsteinToolkit2017/ Best regards, Bruno Giacomazzo on behalf of the SOC -- Prof. Bruno Giacomazzo Department of Physics University of Trento via Sommarive 14 38123 Trento Italy Tel. : +39 0461281631 email : bruno.giacomazzo(a)unitn.it web: http://www.brunogiacomazzo.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Present: Steve, Roland, Ian, Roberto, Christian, Bill Gabella, Frank, Gabrielle, Eliu, Qian, Vassili ET Release: * still have outstanding problems before the release or even before large scale testing * ML testsuites still failing when computing constraints ** need to do this before the release ** Peter, who looked into this, cannot work on it this week ** need a volunteer: Frank will approach persons in private, specifically persons funded by the ET grant * SphericalHarminicGen ** two failing tests (Frank sees SEGFAULTs and HDF5 errors) ** Roland will make time to fix it * MPI fails to build if needed ** Roland suggests to check if OS is linux in perl script then add librt and libutil as a workaround. Frank agrees. All agree, will test this. * GRHydro ** still fails with NaN ** on Roland's plate * want these updates until Wednesday * test on machines, Frank request feedback for results on personal workstations * name for release, pick one from: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. GW150914 example, noisy Psi4 waveforms
by Christian D. Ott 19 Jun '17

19 Jun '17

Hi All, I have been experimenting with the GW150914 par file (Thanks for putting it together!), which uses Llama multipatch (MP) with McLachlan (ML) and, of course, Carpet AMR in the interior Cartesian patch, tracking the punctures. I'm noticing three things when looking at Psi4 l2,m2 waveforms (and this is largely independent of extraction radius): (1) The waveforms have high-frequency wiggles that similar pure-AMR simulations do not show. I don't have a pure AMR simulation for GW150914, but am comparing with an 8-orbit, equal mass, non-spinnning case. I can run GW150914 with pure AMR if need be. (2) The high-frequency wiggles get *worse* if I decrease the finite differencing order from 8th to 4th order. (3) This appears to be a wave amplitude-dependent 'feature', since the wiggles are much less pronounced once the waves reach higher amplitudes. I'm attaching two gnuplot screenshots: fig1.png shows the first ~800 M of Psi4 l2,m2 real at r=136 M with the stock par file and with a modified par file for 4th order. fig2.png is a zoom-in. I'm also attaching the par file that I'm using for the 4th-order run. Now my questions: Does anybody have an idea where the high-f noise is coming from and why it's getting worth for lower FD order? Any suggestions on how to mitigate it? Thanks! - Christian

sites down
by Roland Haas 17 Jun '17

17 Jun '17

Hello all, I seem to be unable to access the trac site: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ or the ET website http://www.einsteintoolkit.org/ The announced downtime (email from Frank) was two days ago. This happens from both my workstation as well as from the Blue Waters login node. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. downtime Cactus and Einsteintoolkit services at LSU
by Frank Loeffler 13 Jun '17

13 Jun '17

Hi, The services hosted at LSU (svn, web, trac) will be moved to more modern hardware, on Tuesday June 13th, planned from 4pm to 6pm central US time, and thus, will not be available in that time frame. Frank Loeffler
