Using "mpirun -np 2" make the program much slower ?
by 赵志超 23 Apr '17

Hello, everyone, I am a beginner in Institute of High Energy Physics, China. I am using ubuntu16.04 and my machine has two cpus: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz X2 I am trying to repeat "Gallery: Binary, inspiraling neutron stars forming a hypermassive neutron star" in http://einsteintoolkit.org/gallery/bns/index.html. I am using the par file and thornlist.th provided in the webpage. However, I found it runs slowly when I run with "mpirun -np 2 ./Cactus_sim nsns.par". It needs about 600s per iteration. All cpu's usage are 100%. Then I try to directly run with command "./Cactus_sim nsns.par", then it needs about 13s per iteration. All cpu's usage are 100%. And then, I try to run with "numactl --cpunodebind=0 --preferred=0 ./cactus_sim nsns.par", It only needs 2.5s per iteration. And just half cpu ( 28 of 56 )'s usage are 100%. I wonder is there some error? I think it should be faster when mpirun are used. Yours, ZhiChao.

GW150914 failing compilation
by Khamesra, Bhavesh 13 Apr '17

Hey everyone, Continuing the test of the ETK on Stampede-KNL, I ran into some issues. After some modification to optionlist, I was able to compile the einsteintoolkit.th thornlist using the development version. Then, I was trying to compile the GW150914 thornlist but ended up this error - CST Error: Repeated element 'tag' in metric_tmp Line: 190 File: /work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/arrangements/Llama/WaveExtractCPM/interface.ccl Repeated item: tags in metric_tmp at /work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/lib/sbin/interface_parser.pl line 881. main::parse_interface_ccl('Llama', 'WaveExtractCPM', 'ARRAY(0x237fd68)', 'Group=HASH(0x28d98a8)', 'HASH(0x23759e0)') called at /work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/lib/sbin/interface_parser.pl line 103 main::create_interface_database(3, 'BINDINGS_DIR', '/work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/configs/GW150914_KNL_test...', 'CONFIG_DIR', '/work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/configs/GW150914_KNL_test...', 'CCTK_HOME', '/work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev', 'TwoPunctures', '/work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/arrangements/EinsteinInit...', ...) called at /work/04082/tg833814/Cactus_ETK_dev/lib/sbin/CST line 135 I get this error even on my local machine (Red Hat 7) I am not sure how to resolve this one? Could someone please help? Also, is there any way to analyse the performance of the code for various simulations? Is there any thorn for this purpose? Lastly, I am still stuck with the BBox error on the GT code. Could you please suggest on how can I resolve this? Thanks Bhavesh ............................. units
by Francisco Guzman 13 Apr '17

13 Apr '17

Hi all, Could you guys please point me to the reference where I can see how units are defined for a binary black hole simulation? (Or possibly simply answer): I just want to know what the units of space and time (M) are. What is M? is it the ADM mass at initial time? the addition of the two black hole masses?... or so... I apologize in advance in case my question is terribly dummy. Thanks, Francisco

machine files for KNL
by Khamesra, Bhavesh 10 Apr '17

10 Apr '17

Hi everyone, I wanted to run a few simulations on Stampede's KNL nodes. I tried to write the machine files but was facing some issues. Does einstein toolkit have machine files for Stampede 2 or Stampede's updated KNL platform? If yes, which one? And if not, are there any machine files for KNL architecture which I could use as reference? Thank You ............................. IOScalar Reductions
by Gwyneth Allwright 07 Apr '17

07 Apr '17

Hi All, I'm currently trying to make sense of the 0D output files for the momentum and Hamiltonian constraint errors (from ML_ADMConstraints and ML_BSSN). When using IOScalar, many files are produced, apparently using various norms and reductions: *.average, *.count, *.d, *.maximum, *.minimum, *.norm1, *.norm2, *.norm_inf, *.sum (as well as the above with an "i" in front of each descriptor, e.g. *.iaverage). I'd naively guess that iaverage, isum etc. are reductions using imaginary components, while the others are with real components, but have no clue whether this is correct (I'm not sure whether these errors can run over the imaginaries). Do norm1, norm2 and norm_inf refer to the L-1, L-2 and L-infinity norms? I'm unsure of what *.count represents -- perhaps the number of grid points over which the reductions are calculated? Are the values used to calculate the reductions taken from different refinement levels? What does *.d represent? For 1D IOASCII output, the headings look something like: # refinement level 1 multigrid level 0 map 0 component 26 # column format: 1:it 2:tl 3:rl 4:c 5:ml 6:ix 7:iy 8:iz 9:time 10:x 11:y 12:z 13:data I'm unsure of what many of these mean: "multigrid level", "map" and "component" in the first row; 3 to 8 in the second row. I'm especially curious about what the components are, because I'm only seeing data for a small number of components. Thanks very much for the help! Gwyneth
