Grid placement utility?
by Scott Hawley 13 Jun '11

13 Jun '11

Just curious: Has anyone developed a user-friendly utility for placing refined grids for Carpet? I'm imagining writing a little "drawing" program which will allow the user to draw rectangles to place grids, and then it would generate the CarpetRegrid::coordinates lines for a parameter file. But I don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone's already done something similar. Thanks, Scott -- Scott H. Hawley, Ph.D. Asst. Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 13 Jun '11

13 Jun '11

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ I short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. Points of discussion: 1) Inclusion of CCE code into the Einstein Toolkit We planned to have the code ready in /incoming for people to look at but we'll have to do that tomorrow. This will mean to introduce new thorns, and a new arrangement: SphericalSlice -> CactusNumerical (analog SphericalSurface) new arrangement PITTNull (?) for CCE evolution code WorldTube -> PITTNull (CCE extraction thorn) ADMDerivatives -> EinsteinBase/EinsteinUtils (?) I suggest we make the code available within the coming week in incoming/ and decide about the final locations, so that we might already be able to include it next week, assuming we are able to resolve all of the remaining dependency/cleanup/documentation issues. 2) ET paper: - Mostly status on example sections. TOV: still sitting in the queue on queenbee Frank Loeffler

EinsteinBase/TmunuBase: request to make parameters restricted
by Bruno Giacomazzo 09 Jun '11

09 Jun '11

Hi, could someone apply the attached patch to EinsteinBase/TmunuBase? It just makes the parameters restricted, so that other thorns can easily use their values (e.g. Whisky checking if Tmunu has been stored in memory,...). I use it already in my version of Cactus/Whisky and I didn't encounter any problem. RotatingSymmetry* test cases breakage
by Erik Schnetter 08 Jun '11

08 Jun '11

Over night, the RotatingSymmetry* test cases broke. I believe this may be due to a recent correction in Carpet HG that corrected the setup of the reduction mask. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Do you think it would be likely to help > much? Profile-guided optimisations need to be handled differently, namely via compiler options, not via source code annotations. One also needs a representative test case. I assume the main problem with this is to ensure that the compiler can make the necessary connections between executable, object files, and source files, which often fails since Cactus places object files in libraries. Apart from this, PGO would just involve experimenting with compiler options to see whether one can obtain a performance benefit. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Meeting minutes
by Roland Haas 06 Jun '11

06 Jun '11

Meeting minutes: Present were: Tanja, Roland, Ian, Erik, Peter, Frank ET paper: * status of examples: ** TOV runs are finished (low and high resolution). Fundamental mode oscillations are long lived and can be observed nicely. Frequency matches expectation. Higher modes are not easy to see, have seen none yet. ** single black hole runs have finished, will process them once Kraken is online again (did I get this right?) ** BBH runs are done, L2 norm of masked constraints does not converge to zero with higher resolution. Suggest plotting 1D plots of the constraint to identify if there is a small region that spoils convergence. transition to Carpet/Mercurial: * Ian Hinder has created a wiki page where we can collect information on how to transition to the new Carpet version: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Carpet_Transition * please add any hints that you have there * Carpet/Hg changes the way buffer zones are handled, it is now the regridding thorn's (ie CarpetRegrid2's) responsibility to add sufficient buffer zones to any region that it passes to Carpet/CarpetLib. Carpet then removes a layer of zones from the input region and declares them buffer zones. * currently some testsuites (http://www.aei.mpg.de/~ianhin/tests/einsteintoolkit/) fail with the Hg version but not the git version. * some failures are obvious/already fixed (Slab,Cartoon), others are unclear (WeylScal4, however there the tests use CarpetRegrid not CarpetRegrid2 which is likely the cause) * Carpet/Hg seems to not work with multipatch anymore (failures after few iterations), Ian and Erik will get together via phone to look into this * Bruno reported (see mailing list) issues with RotatingSymmetry and Carpet/Hg ** suspect this to be related to boundary conditions not being properly applied, Carpet/Hg poisons with NaN by default, Carpet/git does not. ** Ian will re-run Bruno's troublesome BBH parameter file * will create tickets for each problem fall ET workshop: * dates: Oct 14th-18th * either at LSU or GT. LSU is known to have space, GT is checking availability of rooms * preliminary program is on wiki: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2011 Yours, Roland

Hello Ian, Erik, > Could the routine GetAllActive be replaced by just accessing > level_dboxes::active? It could yes. GetAllActive computes level_dboxes::active (it dpulicates code from dh.cc, expanding the code in one of the bboxset constructors taking a vector and a pointer-to-member as arguments). I am not sure though if this information is actually stored anywhere outside of dh::regrid (in level_boxes and the various references to parts of it). Erik: is the "active" information stored permanently anywhere? Yours, Roland

Help with tutorial/LONI access;& ETK website down?
by Scott Hawley 06 Jun '11

Hi. Help? In following a web page about "getting started" on the einsteintoolkit.org site --- which is currently inoperable, at least from my location... % ping einsteintoolkit.org PING einsteintoolkit.org (130.39.21.31): 56 data bytes Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 ^C --- einsteintoolkit.org ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss ... -- I followed a link about requesting an account on Queen Bee. I received an "account activation" email recently, which points me to a few websites which have suspicious SSL certificates. I haven't added an exception until the sys-admins write me back about that. The email contained no login information so I tried "ssh queenbee.loni.org", and used my username and password that I'd used in requesting the account... shawley(a)queenbee.loni.org's password: Connection closed by 208.100.92.23 ...That didn't work. It also says I need an allocation in addition to an account. Is there a "Cactus" or "Tutorial" or "EinsteinToolkit" allocation I should use? I saw several allocations with Erik's name attached but wasn't sure what to do... Any suggestions? Thanks, Scott -- Scott H. Hawley, Ph.D. Asst. problems of building ET on kraken
by Tsatsin Petr 31 May '11

31 May '11

Hello, I'm a new user of the ET. I did an installation of Cactus and EinstainToolkit using the "Tutorial for the new users" on wiki. I have an account on kraken and I modified udb.pm according to the 'ranger' example in a tutorial. Namely I changed: YOUR_LOGIN, YOUR(a)EMAIL.ADDRESS and added set option 'kraken', 'user', 'MY_LOGIN' set option 'kraken', 'allocation', 'MY_ALLOCATION' I tried to compile the test suite on kraken using the command: ./simfactory/sim build --thornlist=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th and I got the following error: 'Simulation Factory: Configuration name(s) not specified -- using default configuration "sim" Uncaught exception from user code: Unknown machine name "krakenpf4.nics.utk.edu" at ./simfactory/sim line 5049. at ./simfactory/sim line 5049 main::get_machine('') called at ./simfactory/sim line 1498 main::command_build() called at ./simfactory/sim line 454' I was wondering if you could help me with this? It's seem like I didn't modify udb.pm in proper way. Thank you. Petr Tsatsin Florida Atlantic University
