Patch: allow custom LORENE_LIBS in optionlist
by David Radice 26 Jun '10

26 Jun '10

Hello, at the moment the compilation of EinsteinToolkit with LORENE fails if LORENE is configured to use FFTW as LORENE_LIBS does not contain fftw3. The attached patch solves the problem by allowing the user to overwrite LORENE_LIBS in the optionlist file. If LORENE_LIBS is not set then the old values are used, so that this modification should not break existing configurations where fftw3 could be not available. Could you please consider applying the attached patch to the LORENE thorn in the development branch? GetComponents: Purely local thorns
by Erik Schnetter 25 Jun '10

25 Jun '10

How do I specify in a GetComponent thorn list that a thorn is purely local and cannot be obtained from a repository? I still want to include the thorn in the thorn list so that I can use this thorn list for building. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Tutorial - compiling executable
by Alan Cowen 25 Jun '10

25 Jun '10

Hi, I am having trouble compiling the Einstein Toolkit executable as described in the Tutorial for New Users. The error I am getting is as follows: Alan-Cowens-MacBook-Pro:Cactus Albi$ ./simfactory/sim build --thornlist=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th Simulation Factory: Configuration name(s) not specified -- using default configuration "sim" Uncaught exception from user code: Unknown machine name "alan-cowens-macbook-pro.local" at ./simfactory/sim line 5034. at ./simfactory/sim line 5034 main::get_machine('') called at ./simfactory/sim line 1496 main::command_build() called at ./simfactory/sim line 452 It seems to be having trouble recognizing my own machine name as expressed in line 5034 of sim. How might I fix this problem? Thanks, Alan Cowen Marshall University REU Mentor: Dr. Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

TwoPunctures and [xyz]_offset
by Frank Loeffler 25 Jun '10

25 Jun '10

Hi, is anybody using the [xyz]_offset parameters of TwoPunctures? I believe that their current implementation is broken and would like to fix it. However, I don't want to break anybodies parameter files in the process. So, if you do use those parameters, please let me know before I commit what I think fixes the problem. Frank

Cannot build Lorene in parallel
by Erik Schnetter 24 Jun '10

24 Jun '10

Lorene's Makefiles for Fortran do not work in parallel. I believe they try to build liblorenef77_g.a and liblorenef77.a simultaneously, which does not work. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Patch: Use smaller chunk size for Carpet HDF5 I/O
by Erik Schnetter 24 Jun '10

24 Jun '10

Following up on a discussion on the AEI Damiana mailing list I suggest this patch, which should reduce the memory requirements for recovering from compressed checkpoint files: Reduce the chunk size when writing 3D HDF5 files by setting the z extent to 1. HDF5 datasets have to be stored in chunks when checksums or compression is used. The chunk size determines the memory requirements for reading files. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Getting started with the Einstein Toolkit
by Erik Schnetter 24 Jun '10

24 Jun '10

We just discovered a few broken links on the Einstein Toolkit web site, in particular in the detailed description of the components of the toolkit. I hope that they are now corrected -- please tell us if you find another broken link. While the page <http://einsteintoolkit.org/toolkit/> lists all the components of the toolkit, it is somewhat impractical to piece things together from this list. It is much easier to use the GetComponents script and our Einstein Toolkit Thornlist to download everything at once. We have step-by-step instructions for this in our tutorial <http://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Tutorial_for_New_Users>. If you want to get started with the Einstein Toolkit, this is your easiest choice. Note that the bottom 2/3 of that page are concerned with looking at simulation results of a TOV star, so the instructions for downloading, compiling, and running aren't actually that intimidating. In fact, we are quite proud that they are much simpler than they used to be. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Patch: Formaline: Clean up source code storing mechanism
by Erik Schnetter 23 Jun '10

23 Jun '10

Restructure and clean up the makefiles and perl scripts that capture the source code when Cactus is built. Make things work with recent versions of git (>1.6.1). Split thorn tarballs into multiple files if they become too large. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Patch: Formaline: update parameter files
by Erik Schnetter 23 Jun '10

23 Jun '10

Update Formaline example parameter files. Use Carpet instead of PUGH, activate missing thorns. Some reformatting. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Patch: Formaline announcing mechanism cleanup
by Erik Schnetter 23 Jun '10

23 Jun '10

Clean up the source code handling the announce mechanism in Formaline. No major changes -- mostly reformatting of source code. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/
