Some repository changes
by Erik Schnetter 18 Jun '10

18 Jun '10

During the release process, we introduced release branches to some svn repositories that did not support branches before. In particular, the "manifest" and "par" directories in existing checkouts (of the development version) will now be confused, since they point to the wrong directory on the svn server. It is probably best to save your local changes (if you have any) in these directories, and check them out afresh, using the repository paths in the manifest. You find the current version of the (development version of the) manifest in svn checkout https://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/manifest/trunk manifest If you are using the release, you do not need to worry -- everything is fine there. This concerns only existing checkouts of the development version. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

I receive "fatal" errors when I update certain git repositories that I had checked out before. The log file contains: Jun 18, 10:53:4: Could not run command: git checkout --track -b master origin/master fatal: git checkout: branch master already exists -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Einstein toolkit release meeting
by Frank Loeffler 17 Jun '10

17 Jun '10

Hi, We will have the last meeting about the Einstein Toolkit release in about 10 minutes: 2pm CDT. We will use EVO this time, information about the meeting is attached below. We also booked the usual CCT conference phone line for the case EVO doesn't work out and you can also reach us on this mailing list or the #cactus irc chat on irc.oftc.net. We will shortly go over the left-over items needed or wanted to the release. Remember also that there should not be _any_ commits after 2pm unless authorized by me, to make sure we can test a consistent state and get the release done as soon as possible. We should also add a link to the Cactus users' guide, reference manual, and an Einstein Toolkit arrangement guide. Maybe it would be enough to point to the corresponding Cactus web pages (if they are up to date), but having copies here would be easier for the users. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Initial data documentation
by Erik Schnetter 17 Jun '10

17 Jun '10

As discussed in our telecon this morning, I wrote a wiki page about setting up an initial data thorn for <http:// docs.einsteintoolkit.org>. The last section (setting up and running with an example parameter file) is still missing. I would be happy if someone took the liberty to proofread, correct, simplify, and possibly complete my explanations. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

McLachlan test suite
by Ian Hinder 16 Jun '10

16 Jun '10

Hi all, I have written some test cases for the McLachlan evolution code. This thorn is currently used in other test suites, but it doesn't have one of its own. The minimal test I have written is a 3D diagonal gauge wave in unigrid with periodic boundary conditions run for one crossing time, so mostly it tests that the RHSs are correct. There are two resolutions (15^3 and 30^3) as well as the exact solution as computed by Exact, so from the test suite output you can compute convergence to test that everything is correct (the automatic regression testsuite mechanism does not do this though). I attach the parameter files for comments. I have tested 4th order convergence to the exact solution. I have enabled 3D HDF5 output in the test suite in anticipation that we might want to have HDF5 comparisons added at some point, and so that when investigating failures there is full information available. The output is from the initial data and the last iteration only, with full compression. The test output sizes are: n = 15 2.9 M n = 30 7.9 M Exact 100 kB Total: 11 M For the exact solution I only output 3D of the admbase gxx and kxx variables. If this is considered too large, we can omit the 3D HDF5 output for now, as it is not used in the current Cactus testsuite mechanism. I have put the test suites in the existing ML_BSSN_Helper thorn, as this seemed the easiest solution, since ML_BSSN is automatically generated. The test does not test the shift terms. For that I would use the shifted gauge wave solution, but as far as I know the harmonic shift gauge condition is not implemented in McLachlan. The tests are run on 2 processes as CarpetIOASCII output is used, so the output depends on the number of processes. If output on 1 process is better, let me know. In principle, the number of OpenMP threads should not matter in this case. However, the tests seem to fail if I use OMP_NUM_THREADS=2 (or leave it unset on my dual-core laptop, which makes it use 2). The failure is: Issuing mpirun -np 2 /Users/ian/Cactus/llama/exe/cactus_mcl /Users/ ian/Cactus/llama/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN_Helper/test/ gw3d_Exact_ord4_15.par alp.norm1.asc: differences below tolerance on 1 lines alp.norm2.asc: differences below tolerance on 1 lines alp.sum.asc: substantial differences significant differences on 1 (out of 2) lines maximum absolute difference in column 3 is 1.00044417195022e-11 maximum relative difference in column 3 is 2.96613722781153e-15 Failure: 12 files compared, 3 differ, 1 differ significantly Files which differ strongly: [1] alp.sum.asc I don't know why this fails. -- Ian Hinder ian.hinder(a)aei.mpg.de

Checking out documentation and parameter pseudo-thorns
by Erik Schnetter 15 Jun '10

15 Jun '10

I would like to check out the documentation and example thorns in the default Einstein Toolkit thorn list. Since these are not proper thorns, their CHECKOUT statements must be commented out so that Cactus does not try to build these thorns. This leads to a clumsy syntax -- but we can correct this later. Are there other pseudo-thorns that I am missing? -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/ Index: einsteintoolkit.th =================================================================== --- einsteintoolkit.th (revision 20) +++ einsteintoolkit.th (working copy) @@ -224,6 +224,24 @@ McLachlan/ML_BSSN_O2_Helper McLachlan/ML_ADMConstraints McLachlan/ML_ADMQuantities +!TARGET = $ARR +!TYPE = git +!URL = git://carpetcode.dyndns.org/McLachlan +!AUTH_URL = carpetgit@carpetcode.dyndns.org:McLachlan +!REPO_PATH= $2 +!CHECKOUT = McLachlan/doc +!TARGET = $ARR +!TYPE = git +!URL = git://carpetcode.dyndns.org/McLachlan +!AUTH_URL = carpetgit@carpetcode.dyndns.org:McLachlan +!REPO_PATH= $2 +!CHECKOUT = McLachlan/m +!TARGET = $ARR +!TYPE = git +!URL = git://carpetcode.dyndns.org/McLachlan +!AUTH_URL = carpetgit@carpetcode.dyndns.org:McLachlan +!REPO_PATH= $2 +!CHECKOUT = McLachlan/par @@ -253,3 +271,12 @@ Carpet/CarpetSlab Carpet/CarpetTracker Carpet/LoopControl +!TARGET = $ARR +!TYPE = git +!URL = git://carpetcode.dyndns.org/carpet +!AUTH_URL = carpetgit@carpetcode.dyndns.org:carpet +# For experimental version, comment previous three lines and uncomment next two +# Note that you will need to get access first (ask Erik Schnetter) +#!TYPE = hg +#!URL = ssh://carpetmercurial@carpetcode.dyndns.org/carpet +!CHECKOUT = Carpet/doc
