I have just submitted an abstract for a talk at GR19 <http://www.gr19.com/
in the session B2 Numerical Relativity and Astrophysical
Applications. This talk will advertise the Einstein Toolkit to the community.
Title: The Einstein Toolkit
Authors: Erik Schnetter for the Einstein Toolkit Consortium
Abstract:
We introduce the Einstein Toolkit, a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems. Such systems include gravitational wave space-times, collisions of compact objects such as black holes or neutron stars, accretion onto compact objects, core collapse supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts.
This toolkit is developed as open software for relativistic astrophysics. Our aim is to provide the core computational tools that can enable new science, broaden our community, facilitate interdisciplinary research and take advantage of emerging petascale computers and advanced cyberinfrastructure. We believe that this toolkit can also be constructively used in teaching numerical relativity courses, and can help "getting started" in numerical relativity research.
The Einstein Toolkit builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including CactusEinstein, Whisky, and Carpet. The Einstein Toolkit currently uses the Cactus Framework as the underlying computational infrastructure that provides large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development.
We give a brief overview over the toolkit, its goals, and its current state, and show examples of scientific results obtained by various research groups employing this toolkit as basis of their research codes.
Hello,
when using "GetComponents.htm einsteintoolkit.th", I get the error
LB-login-damiana ~ > GetComponents.htm einsteintoolkit.th Do you want to update all existing components? yes, no [no] : ----------------------------------------------------------------- Checking out module: AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon from repository: http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon/trunk into: Cactus/arrangements ----------------------------------------------------------------- Checking out module: AEIDevelopment/PsiKadelia from repository: http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/AEIDevelopment/PsiKadelia/trunk into: Cactus/arrangements ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2 components checked out. 0 components updated.
Unable to process AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon. Unable to process AEIDevelopment/PsiKadelia.
Time Elapsed: 0 minutes, 0 seconds
And the thorns are not checked out.
Could the error message be made a little more informative?
I don't see the error in my .th list and if I check out the thorns manually I can get them.
My entries are:
!TARGET = $ARR
!TYPE = svn
!URL = http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/$1/$2/trunk

!CHECKOUT =

AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon
AEIDevelopment/PsiKadelia

Thanks, Luca

What does 'GetCactus -v THORNLIST' say?

I am not sure if this is the problem: but do you really have an empty line between each line containing something?

Do you really mean GetCactus? I tried it with the .th file:

No, I don't have the empty lines in my .th file. I guess it is an effect of the pasting to the email. Anyway, I attach the .th file.

I'm pretty sure Frank meant 'GetComponents -v THORNLIST'. I would go one step further though, and suggest you reset GetComponents users file by adding the --reset-authentication option. This will let you ensure that you are correctly authenticated; it seems that GetComponents is trying to perform an anonymous checkout here. Also, try moving AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon to the top of the !CHECKOUT list. This will make GetComponents verify your username with the IsolatedHorizon thorn, instead of the LegoExcision thorn which doesn't require authentication (it shouldn't really make a difference except that you may be prompted for a password during the checkout process in your configuration).
Let me know if this helps,
Eric

Hello,
I think that it would be useful to be able to update with the script only some thorns, instead of either all or none:
GetComponents.htm -v einsteintoolkit.th Do you want to update all existing components? yes, no [no]
What do you think?

If these are just occasionally a few thorns, a direct update might be the better option. If it's a number of thorns, and the same quite a number of times, you could have a thorn list just for them.
Is what you propose something like a confirmation of update / no update for every thorn in the list, ala
Update CactusBase/CoordBase [YES/no]?
That might not be such a bad idea after all, I agree.

Indeed that was what I meant. It could be also useful to add this feature to the gmake update (it was gmake cvsupdate) command of Cactus.
Luca
I agree that it would be nice to have individual updates as an option, but I don't think it's a good idea to run through the entire list. Einsteintoolkit.th already has 130 components... Perhaps instead it could filter by section, and then give the option to specify individual components?

These thorns are in AEIDevelopment, so they require authentication to checkout and are only available over https. GetComponents is trying to check them out via http instead.

OK. So it's still trying to check out over http (ie. not https)? AEIDevelopment is only available over https, so if it's trying to check out over http it will definitely fail. How about this:
!TARGET = $ARR !TYPE = svn !URL = https://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/$1/$2/trunk !AUTH_URL = https://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/$1/$2/trunk !USER = <your svn username> !CHECKOUT = Excision/LegoExcision AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon AEIDevelopment/PsiKadelia AEIDevelopment/WaveExtract

Barry is right and I also didn't catch this before: if AEIDevelopment cannot be reached using http (for obvious reasons), the URL is wrong.
Barry suggested:
!URL = https://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/$1/$2/trunk !AUTH_URL = https://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/$1/$2/trunk
This should word, but in this case you can also just drop the AUTH_URL field. It will then default to URL.
!USER = <your svn username>
I don't recommend putting this into the thornlist. GetComponents will ask for it anyway and if you don't you can easily send your thornlists around without someone changing them before usage.

Thanks,

I've updated GetComponents to print the svn/cvs/etc error messages as they occur. Any errors will also be stored in $HOME/.crl/crl.log. Unfortunately svn errors can be rather hit or miss in terms of helpfulness.
For example, when I tried to checkout http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon/trunk, it gave me
svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.aei.mpg.de/numrel/AEIDevelopment/IsolatedHorizon/trunk': 200 OK (http://svn.aei.mpg.de)
Still I hope this will help.
