Grid function timelevels
by Jens Mahlmann 03 Jul '18

03 Jul '18

Dear all, I am currently optimizing some code in the Einstein Toolkit and have a general question on time levels and declarations. Throughout my evolution, I use some quantities (initialized as grid functions with various time levels) which are not changed throughout the evolution or only changed explicitly in some moments. At the moment, I make sure in every time step via variable[i3D] = variable_p[i3D] that I have the correct values at the respective time. Is there a better way to do this? I.e. is there a way to declare a grid function or to register it such that it stays untouched throughout the time evolution except when I change it explicitly? Thank you very much and my best from Valencia Jens Mahlmann

meeting minutes for 2018-07-02
by Roland Haas 02 Jul '18

02 Jul '18

Present: Roland, Bhavesh, Peter, Sam, Steve, Yosef, Zach, Helvi, Ian, Antoni Ramos, Gabrielle, Shawn, Qian Peter will host the meeting for the next 4 weeks until but not incl. August 6th. ET release in August: * would be 6 months from last release * have test cases for GiRaFFE ** total data file size: 31 MB ** largest memory usage: 3.4GB ** runtime: cumulative 1hr of runtime ** limits should be such that things can be run on a low and laptop, test should be regression tests. Physics tests should be separate can be eg in par/ directory or in gallery. ** Roland suggests no more than a couple hundred MB of RAM for tests to run in VMs of tutorial machines, Ian suggests less than 1GB * will push back to September to make sure GiRaFFE is included Thorns to include: * GiRaFFE * Proca and Lean, Helvi and collaborators are working on paper, but there has not been much work on including it yet. ** there is a test suite for it ** needs a reviewer, likely not in this release but in the next ** advertise on ET page and wiki on https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Thorns_we_know_of, add to master einsteintoolkit.th on master after release ET testing sytem * currently down due to suspected * Nebula is also down due to hardware issues * NDSlabs is ending its testing phase, need to look for alternative services for the VMs Supporting current OS: * issues with passing Fortran strings will exist once gcc8 becomes commonplace. Roland found that the issue already exists with all intel compilers on 64bit machines and has apparently not caused issues so far. Erik's fix should be applied, extended to also cover intel compilers: https://bitbucket.org/cactuscode/cactus/pull-requests/49/cactus-support-gcc… Bugs in ET: * https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/2158 Steve will go ahead Testing ET on Macs: * get spare macbooks at NCSA * buy some mac hardware * run OSX in a VM * consider Linux subsytem for windows * check that there are instructions on the tutorial PreSync: * Steve would like to have flesh support PreSync in next release to be available for thorns that want to use it * ideally it should be possible to run simulation with mixed presync aware and presync unaware thorns without them interfering * move discussion to the mailing list Education and outreach group: * poll to find a time for a regular call: https://doodle.com/poll/286zi6yvcgvy6784 * the first meeting will finalize the proposal: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lhfZUl5fvq4ALGBsGtSAEzTSS2HSJjczf2C-Qus… * please join if interested in the working group Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. compiling ET on OpenHPC 1.3.5 and a question
by Hamilton, Maria 29 Jun '18

29 Jun '18

Hello, Einstein Toolkit coiled smoothly on OpenHPC 1.3.5 with simfactory/mdb/optionlists/centos.cfg, by changing MPI_DIR, commenting out the HDF5-DIR and adding HWLOC_DIR. I do need help in setting up a run that would extract gravitational radiation for a boosted blackhole. Is there an exact solution for a boosted BH available? If not, no problem. Just a regular Schwarzschild BH will do for now. I'm interested in looking at what thorns are available in ET to constraining the initial data, and how do I switch between them? I'm sure this was done before, and I would really appreciate some pointers on how to start the simulation. Thank you, Maria _______________________ Dr. Maria C. cctk_ScheduleFunctions.h assuming "int" for a "void" scheduled routine?
by Bernard Kelly 27 Jun '18

27 Jun '18

Hi. I recently took a simple thorn --- one routine scheduled at POSTEVOL --- and enlarged it so that now there's a second routine scheduled at STARTUP. Both routines are written in C, taking in CCTK_ARGUMENTS, and returning void. The new routine is called Interpolate_setup.c During compilation, I get the following warning: ------------------------------ /nobackupp2/bjkelly1/codes/Cactus/configs/sim/build/interp_metric_sph_grid/Interpolate_setup.c(47): warning #147: declaration is incompatible with "int sph_grid_metric_initialize(void)" (declared at line 7 of "/nobackupp2/bjkelly1/codes/Cactus/configs/sim/bindings/include/interp_metric_sph_grid/cctk_ScheduleFunctions.h") void sph_grid_metric_initialize(CCTK_ARGUMENTS){ ^ ------------------------------ Can anyone tell me why the build process is assuming that the new routine is taking a void input and returning int? I can edit the thorn's auto-generated "cctk_ScheduleFunctions.h" by hand to correct this behavior, but it seems like it shouldn't be necessary. Bernard

GCC 8 -- may need to update Cactus configure script
by Erik Schnetter 26 Jun '18

26 Jun '18

GCC 8 was just released. The release notes contain this in their fine print: "Character variables longer than HUGE(0) elements are now possible on 64-bit targets. Note that this changes the procedure call ABI for all procedures with character arguments on 64-bit targets, as the type of the hidden character length argument has changed. The hidden character length argument is now of type INTEGER(C_SIZE_T)." In other words, strings can now be longer than 2e9 characters. This is a good change. To make this possible, the length of strings is now passed as ptrdiff_t instead of as int, and consequently, the C/Fortran interoperability mechanism in Cactus may need to be updated. Without this, there might be a segfault e.g. when calling CCTK_INFO from Fortran. (It might also be that things just work most of the time, although this would be an unreliable coincidence.) The respective include file that will need to be modified is "cctk_FortranString.h" in the flesh. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Multi-messenger Astrophysics at the Rochester Institute of Technology
by Carlos Lousto 26 Jun '18

26 Jun '18

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Multi-messenger Astrophysics at the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York The recent observations of a binary neutron star merger using both gravitational wave interferometers as well as electromagnetic telescopes across the full spectrum have initiated the age of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics. As part of several NASA and NSF collaborative projects, the RIT's Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation (CCRG) is currently seeking to fill one or two postdoctoral research positions with highly qualified individuals interested pursuing research in the fields of numerical relativity, theoretical and computational astrophysics, with an emphasis on general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics simulations. We are particularly interested in relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics simulations of accretion disks around supermassive black hole mergers, and binary neutron star coalescences from prior to merger through to the formation of disks and/or collapse of the merged remnant, the production of jets, and launching of outflows. We are also interested perform ``event-based'' simulations, using parameters informed by specific LIGO/Virgo detections, and thereby permitting much closer comparison with observables, in order to interpret current and future multi-messenger observations by a wide array of current and future detectors. The successful postdoctoral candidates will be Fellows of a new prestigious "Frontier in Gravitational-Wave Astrophysics" (FGWA) Program. Initially appointed for two or three years, the Fellows are renewable up to five years depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. Senior scientists in the group includes Manuela Campanelli (Director), Joshua Faber, Carlos Lousto, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Jason Nordhaus, Yosef Zlochower, Sukanya Chakrabarti, John Whelan, and Hans-Peter Bischof, several postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. students (see http://ccrg.rit.edu/people for an overview on who is or has been at CCRG). The group is involved in several large collaborations, including the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), The Einstein Toolkit Consortium (http://einsteintoolkit.org) and a NASA Theoretical and Computational Astrophysics Network (TCAN). CCRG researchers have access to several computing cluster facilities at national computing centers such as XSEDE and the NCSA's Blue Waters Supercomputer (with an allocation of over 160MSUs), as well as a dedicated over 3000-core cluster hosted at the Center. More information about the CCRG is available at http://ccrg.rit.edu/. And about Rochester at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester,_New_York Applications should consist of a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae including publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. All materials should be sent electronically as soon as possible to: manuela[AT]astro[dot]rit[dot]edu with a copy to ccrg-postdoc[AT]ccrgweb.rit.edu. For an overview of all job openings at CCRG please go to: http://ccrg.rit.edu/spotlight/jobs. Enquiries can be addressed to the center's Director: Manuela Campanelli, manuela[AT]astro[dot]rit[dot]edu Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, School of Mathematical Sciences, and School of Physics and Astronomy, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, New York 14623 USA Review of completed applications will begin as soon as available and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Starting date can be as early as January and no later than September, 2019. RIT is committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.
