Present: Frank, Roland, Steve, Peter, Matt, Josh, Erik, Zach, Jonah, Elo There will be no ET call next week due to labour day/Thanksgiving weekend in North America. IllnoisGRMHD: * report is with Zach, was send via private email * separate repo is fine, Zach will create a repository * volunteer needed for the compatibility thorn * Zach will move compatibility thorns into same repo as IllinoisGRMHD GetComponents on OSX: * no OSX user has written * Roland will propose a patch simfactory on BeeGFS: * Erik will look into Bruno's proposed patch writing timeseries data into hdf5: * Frank would like to use this for things like the Hamiltonian norm * HDF5 supports extensible datasets, an example on how to use this is the HDF5 output of Multipole SPH in Cactus: * Matt has a more or less working version of SPH on grid background * came out of work at a national lab on generic grid methods * currently linked in a shared objects for mesh handling and nearest neighbour finding * currently writing his thesis, so code is not changing much right now * load balancing through bisection initially then times the RHS and neighbour looked up push particles around * no octree, instead a hierarchical hash * particle to grid data currently uses SPH approximation for Tmunu at gridpoints of Cactus grid * will arrange for time for presentation through mailing list Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

Cactus Course
by Garrison, David 22 Sep '15

Hello, I am in the early stages of developing a 1 credit hour course on using Cactus for Computational Physics. Does anyone have any recommendations of material? Has anyone here taught such a class? -DG -- David Garrison, Ph.D. Director of Graduate Programs for the School of Science and Computer Engineering, Associate Professor and Former Chair of Physics University of Houston-Clear Lake Bayou 3531 Houston, TX 77058 Tel: 281-283-3796 Fax: 281-283-3709 http://sce.uhcl.edu/garrison For more information about the UHCL Physics Program go to http://www.uhcl.edu/physics or sign up for UHCL newsletters at https://ecommunications.houston.edu/uhcl/join.html "If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" — Albert Einstein.

SPH in EinsteinToolkit
by Stefan Ruehe 31 Aug '15

31 Aug '15

Hallo, long time ago i asked about a SPH modul in EinsteinToolkit for my PhD thesis. It took more time i thougt, but i am still working. First i have some questions about citing, because i will present a poster at a meeting and i will publish some prework. I want to mention the EinsteinToolkit, but there are no results using it yet. Should i taking something into account? Second i made necessery preparatory work and will now try to integrate the SPH algorithm. I am sure it could be helpful not working alone on it, so i could open a google group for communication, if somebody want. Thank you and best regards, Stefan Ruehe

Interest in Null / Timelike geodesic integrator
by Yosef Zlochower 26 Aug '15

26 Aug '15

Hi, I have been working on an integrator for timelike and null geodesics that evolve the geodesics using MoL. With an RK4 integration, and a fourth-order interpolation stencil, the code should be third-order accurate (due to the lower-order accuracy obtained when interpolating derivatives). The code appears to work well with a typical moving boxes BBH simulation (I haven't actually tried null geodesics yet). It however, will not scale well to arbitrary numbers of geodesics as all processes need to know the locations of each geodesic. I'd be happy to share the code if there is some interest. -- Dr. Yosef Zlochower Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation Associate Professor School of Mathematical Sciences Rochester Institute of Technology 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, NY 14623 Office:74-2067 Phone: +1 585-475-6103 yosef(a)astro.rit.edu CONFIDENTIALITY NOTE: The information transmitted, including attachments, is intended only for the person(s) or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Re: [Users] Kranc and xAct
by Comer Duncan 25 Aug '15

Ian, Thanks for your note. I am still having trouble with the .m file and so am not needing the xAct way just yet. This is becoming more and more frustrating as I try to get the .m file in a shape more along your Weyl4 example. I am not wanting to whine to the list as I think that is a big waste of people's time. I do like the kranc approach and am convinced of its demonstrated utility relative to having to construct thorns from scratch. Sorry for bothering you and Eloisa about this. I do appreciate your help and do understand that your can't perform miracles... HDF5 error: header file can't be opened/seen?
by dumsani 25 Aug '15

25 Aug '15

Hi Everyone, I'am trying to build (compile) a simulation using some private thorns and the Einstein Toolkit (ET_2014_05). The build goes through successfully on my local machine (a laptop running on Gnu/Linux mint 17.1, using GCC compilers). However, when compiling the same code on a remote cluster (running on Gnu/Linux RedHat plus Intel compilers) the compiling persistently fails with the error: cactus/arrangements/EinsteinAnalysis/AHFinderDirect/src/patch/patch_system.cc(87): catastrophic error: cannot open source file "hdf5.h" # include <hdf5.h> Searching on Google, there seems to have been aticket (https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/911, or http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2012-July/002333.html) on this issue and it was resolved. I tried the work-around suggested by Roland on the mailing list about modifying the configuration.ccl file in the concerned thorn. But this didn't work. The ticket connected with this error points to modifications in cactus/lib/sbin/ConfigurationParser.pl file. On the web-page of this ticket/patches, I can see some highlighted sections -- green and red -- and some that are not. But I'm not sure what the difference between them is, especially in terms of what to remove and/or add onto my copy of the file in order to remove the error. (I have attached a copy of my ConfigurationParser.pl file) Naively, I also suspect the issue could be that the HDF5 library on this cluster was compiled without support for C++. (..because the source file that raises the error is a C++ file which conditionally requests some HDF5 functionality.) But I tested this particular point by pointing the simulation to my own copy of HDF5 which I compiled with C++ support within the cluster. Yet the error still comes up and stops the compilation. I'd appreciate any ideas to help me past this error. Regards, Dumsani

WaveToy a in functional, multi-threaded style
by Erik Schnetter 24 Aug '15

24 Aug '15

I have a presentation at the Einstein Toolkit Workshop where I mentioned having implemented a 1d WaveToy in a functional, multi-threaded style. Several people expressed interest in learning more about the details. I will offer a code walk-through and an explanation and discussion of various ideas today at 11:30 EST (in seven minutes) in a Google Hangout: https://talkgadget.google.com/hangouts/_/gtfl44qfjuh3wen5eci4k527qua If you are interested, see you there. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/
